These sailors are concerned with external as well as some internal communications. This division could perhaps be called the melting pot of the Navy. There are seven different rates in OC Division and they all live in the same compartment. Radiomen listen.to the ticker of teletype machines all day. They live behind closed doors most of their life in the Navy. These men are responsible for insuring that the Edson gets the word on time. Working in the open air, the Signalman also see that the ship gets the word. However, these men are concerned with strictly visual communciations. Put a lamp in the hands of a Signalman and stand by to receive flashing light. They arepretty good at semifore also. Quartermasters plot, fix, track, DR and all kinds of other navigational gymnastics. They insure that the Edson gets where she is going, or at least knows where she is going, 'U'-'-4'-lr ' ' ss-'- A 'f2 ISQSW' RM1 ROBERTSON PN1 WARD OM3 HELMEN SM3 BUCKLIN OM3 SCHWARTZ PN3 SMITH RMSN JOHNSON SMSN JONES OMSN SORENSEN SM2 CONDON SM3 KRULL PC3 ZEHNER PCSN KATSMA RMSN YOUNT RMSA ALKIRE The ship's office houses the Yeomen and Personnelmen. Their short stubby fingers are a result of the pounding their hands take at the face of a typewriter. The passageways are empty. lVlaiI Call . Suddenly there is no room to travel amidships for all the people crowded around the post office. The friendly Postal Clerks sort, stack, and bind letters for you, your friends and your family. lf you need First Aid see a Corpsman. They have pills, capsules, syrettes, band aids and they inspect, detect and correct all that ails the weary sailor. friggf :fr fl-':'f'1j'fe -'-'MM ':::v-1--'iz--1:-','j..A gil- 1- -'--ag up -

It is here, in a small compartment jammed with radios, radars and odd bits of electronic gear that the ship's combat information is collected, dis- played, evaluated and disseminated. Each man in Combat has a specific job assigned but all are capable of handling any station in CIC from navigation to radio talker to scope operator. The CIC team has a vital role in just about every EDSON mission. On Naval gunfire support missions where the EDSON spent most of her WESTPAC deployment the Combat crew was responsible for plotting our targets and getting the ship into position to fire her guns. At the same time an air and surface search was constantly maintained on the radar scopes for hostile contacts When it came time to refuel or rearm a favorite evolution of everyone on board it was the radar gang who found our unrep ship and got us there The Radarmen can be proud of their place on the EDSON team and the EDSON can be equally proud of her Radarmen i:.2:- RD1 PICKETT JAKE- RD2 GUELDENHAAR EIQRIAFITON RD2 PLANK 6 RD2 TITUS RD3 DEGROOT RD3 LOCK FID3 IVICCARTHY RD3 MEYER RD3 PARKS RDSN LOWELL suv ARMSTRONG Rosn vAi.nEz BRIDGE colvlBAT NO SURFACE coNTAcTs
