The primary function of AS Division is still, of course, Anti-Submarine Warfare and the majority of the divisior1's effort is therefore channeled towards developing and perfecting the ability to detect, localize, classify and destroy enemy submarines. This involves a vast amount of highly sophisticated equipment and a high level of personnel training in both equipment maintenance and operation. i When the ship is deployed in WESTPAC, how activities, and it is here that sonar now plays a new role. With its ability to detect the sounds made by projectiles landing in the water sonar can serve as an early warning system when the ship is receiving counter-battery fire. In periods of darkness and 'OW visibility, this may be the only means whereby counter-battery can be detected until it lands within a short distance of the ship. Another relatively new function of sonar is its us channels when the ship is entering and leaving port. ever, shipwide ASW operations are somewhat pre-empted by other naval e as an aid in marking the edges of More uses are found daily for sonar as we develop a better understanding of its capabilities, consequently Sonar Control has become a key station for all operational activities.
