5524 ff l f' ' ' COMMANDER J. S. HOLIVIES COIVINIANDING OFFICER This is the fifth book of its kind published by the USS EDSON lDD-946l. The EDSON Cruise Book of 1968 pictorially records the major events and moods of the ship during her 1968 WESTPAC deployment. lVlost of the time you will see smiling faces and superb deeds being accomplished. However, interspersed throughout the book you will note expressions of concern and routine but vital jobs being done. This is as it should be, because realistically, our cruise has been one with its ups and downs. We've had our good days and our bad days. Nevertheless in review of our entire cruise it must be acknowledged, that the EDSON and her crew successfully carried out all assigned missions. ln every field of endeavor she did more than she was asked. She set new standards for future crews to surpass. She created a new reputation for herself as being ready, being capable and being willing to do whatever task was assigned plus picking up the reins when someone else had let them fall. She maintained her beauty and grace as a first line destroyer in the United States Navy. All in all she was a good ship of which all EDSON men can be proud. Our Cruise Book is designed mainly for our own enjoy- ment, patterned to recall fond memories and to show that each of us proudly sailed the EDSON in one of her finest cruises. lt is also meant to bridge the gap with our families for those many months that we have been gone and known only as letters in the mail box. We sincerely hope that this Cruise Book does fulfill these goals and brings you closer to the EDSON and her crew. ZJUAJLM J. S. SWAN As the crew of EDSON you shall be forever proud of your ship and her distinguished accomplishments of this 1968 WESTPAC deployment. The frustrations and pangs of a demanding deployment were obliterated by the superior manner in which EDSON accomplished her missions. EDSON's enviable combat record for this deployment attests your professionalism, fortitude and dedication to the causes of freedom. You saw to it that EDSON met the enemy with her best on every occasion. There is little more I know, that you can ask of a crew. z.v-gf--veg, W. R.
