EDSON The EDSON is a fighting ship. lt is fitting that she is named after a fighting Marine. It is a lasting tribute to Major General Merritt A. EDSON USMC, H897-1955l. General EDSON was considered to be one of the five greatest combat commanders of World War ll. For his astute leadership and devotion to duty during the defense of Edson Ridge l3-10 September 1942i at Guadalcanal, General Edson received the Medal of Honor, his country's highest honor, from a greatful American people. During this battle General EDSON, through personal example, enabled 800 Marines to withstand repeated assaults of a fanatical enemy numbering more than 2,500. ln addition to the Medal of Honor, two Navy Crosses, a Silver Star and two Legion of Merits, his numerous decorations included the Presidential Unit Citation with two bronze stars, the Mexican Service Medal, World War l Victory Medal with Maltese Cross, China Service Medal with bronze star, American Defense Service Medal with bronze star, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal with six bronze stars, World War ll Victory Medal and the Distinguished Service Order lBritish Empirel. General EDSON will be remembered for his keen professional ability, his magnificent leadership in battle and his sympathetic understanding of his juniors. , -.,,:5 , ,- f y L4--, 1 ' ' ' ' , . . . ,. -W'-Q'-1' 1' ,- ' 'Ll 1,-.',, Q, , Q:-bln: 4-QW4 ,V R .h 5 I 5, , . , , , - -JA? ,Mn LLM-LLL M, ..,,-,f 'Av,,,. ,NM ,,,-.....Q,-L,,,,,,1. .,,.,,,,....4, v - ' u...,2,.4.,,........-.,.-.,., ., .. HOLIVIES COIVINIANDING OFFICER This is the fifth book of its kind published by the USS EDSON lDD-946l. The EDSON Cruise Book of 1968 pictorially records the major events and moods of the ship during her 1968 WESTPAC deployment. lVlost of the time you will see smiling faces and superb deeds being accomplished. However, interspersed throughout the book you will note expressions of concern and routine but vital jobs being done. This is as it should be, because realistically, our cruise has been one with its ups and downs. We've had our good days and our bad days. Nevertheless in review of our entire cruise it must be acknowledged, that the EDSON and her crew successfully carried out all assigned missions. ln every field of endeavor she did more than she was asked. She set new standards for future crews to surpass. She created a new reputation for herself as being ready, being capable and being willing to do whatever task was assigned plus picking up the reins when someone else had let them fall. She maintained her beauty and grace as a first line destroyer in the United States Navy. All in all she was a good ship of which all EDSON men can be proud. Our Cruise Book is designed mainly for our own enjoy- ment, patterned to recall fond memories and to show that each of us proudly sailed the EDSON in one of her finest cruises. lt is also meant to bridge the gap with our families for those many months that we have been gone and known only as letters in the mail box. We sincerely hope that this Cruise Book does fulfill these goals and brings you closer to the EDSON and her crew. ZJUAJLM J. S. SWAN As the crew of EDSON you shall be forever proud of your ship and her distinguished accomplishments of this 1968 WESTPAC deployment. The frustrations and pangs of a demanding deployment were obliterated by the superior manner in which EDSON accomplished her missions. EDSON's enviable combat record for this deployment attests your professionalism, fortitude and dedication to the causes of freedom. You saw to it that EDSON met the enemy with her best on every occasion. There is little more I know, that you can ask of a crew. z.v-gf--veg, W. R. When COIVIDESRON 13 was Commander, Naval Gunfire Support Unit ICTU 7O.8.9l off the coast of the Republic of Vietnam, your devastating fire power served as an example for all of the ships of the gun line . When COIVIDESRON 13 was the Senior United States Naval Officer present in our visits to KAOHSIUNG, TAIWAN and HONG KONG, B.C.C., your excellent con- duct ashore and the favorable impression you left with the peoples of these two cities was an example for all of the ships who visit foreign ports. The primary function of AS Division is still, of course, Anti-Submarine Warfare and the majority of the divisior1's effort is therefore channeled towards developing and perfecting the ability to detect, localize, classify and destroy enemy submarines. This involves a vast amount of highly sophisticated equipment and a high level of personnel training in both equipment maintenance and operation. i When the ship is deployed in WESTPAC, how activities, and it is here that sonar now plays a new role. With its ability to detect the sounds made by projectiles landing in the water sonar can serve as an early warning system when the ship is receiving counter-battery fire. In periods of darkness and 'OW visibility, this may be the only means whereby counter-battery can be detected until it lands within a short distance of the ship. Another relatively new function of sonar is its us channels when the ship is entering and leaving port. ever, shipwide ASW operations are somewhat pre-empted by other naval e as an aid in marking the edges of More uses are found daily for sonar as we develop a better understanding of its capabilities, consequently Sonar Control has become a key station for all operational activities. .i by 5 T SONAR IS ALWAYS DARK IVIR. They live behind closed doors most of their life in the Navy. These men are responsible for insuring that the Edson gets the word on time. The CIC team has a vital role in just about every EDSON mission. On Naval gunfire support missions where the EDSON spent most of her WESTPAC deployment the Combat crew was responsible for plotting our targets and getting the ship into position to fire her guns. Fixit , Fl Division, can be seen at work on the highest mast and in the lowest bilges. R Division is made up of four distinct units, all working to keep Edson on the Iine and ready to go. The ElVl's, Edson's electricians, are responsible for the repair and maintenance of all lighting and electrical circuits, electrical motors and the proper operation of the ship's service turbo-generators. Not only working with Edson's internal communications systems, the IC men are also responsible for the flawless operation of theship's gyro-compass and its many outputs supplying vital information to the ship's navigation, air defense and gunnery systems. Edson's plumbers, the SF's and DC men, shoulder the burden of keeping Edson in one piece, either through permanent repair by the shipfitters or temporary repair by the DC men. The A Gang, a small group of lVllVl's, EN's and lVlR's, is responsible for the upkeep and repair of a large variety of equipment. The motor that moves the rudder, the reefers, the air conditioning units, the hot water heaters, the machinery in the galley and scullery, the ship's emergency supply of electrical power. These are just a few of the many jobs assigned to the A Gang. - '. X75 fj 7 fi SF1 sci-IENDEI. The proceeding general delineation of SuppIy's functions aboard the Edson tends to point out the fact that they deal ,vvith everybody on board at least once every day in providing a multitude of services. This demands more than technical competence. It necessitates a high sense of personal involvement. Service is the key, and in a word the purpose of the Supply Department.
