I recall those words not to quote myself, but to let you know that in the three months since then you have indeed lived up to the reputation of professionals. You have responded freely and with dedication to situations requiring long hours and hard work, and you have enabled EDSON to respond smartly to her committments. I know without a doubt that EDSON's already bright record has been enhanced by your effort and I know equally well that each one of you has EARNED the right to feel a greater ,self-respect as a result of those efforts. First Division has the primary responsibility of keeping EDSON looking sharp and proud. During a normal day underway, the division may be found chipping and painting, doing fancy work to dress up the quarterdeck, or even swabbing the decks. During our numerous underway replenishments, First's men will be found rigging the stations, manning signal stations, and tending phone lines: and during general quarters they may be found on the gunmounts as loaders or in the magazines as handlers. In port the steady process of keeping our Lady in Paint and Powder still goes on as sides must be cleaned, decks re-' painted, and all topside areas washed down. When in WestPac, the boats must be constantly kept clean and in top running condition so liberty parties may go ashore. As one can readily see, the men in First Division must truly be Jacks of all Trades. 19' W ,gpm X- X. Within moments the doleful groan that is unmistakably a 5 f54 Gun Mount could be heard along with the whine of the 3 f 50 amplydynes. The guns swung out, and when the word was passed, hundreds of pounds of deadly high explosives whistled off to wreak havoc upon the enemy. The scene was repeated on many occasions. Always the guns were ready. This was not luck though 5 f54 gun problems are almost legend. It was a hard working Second Division that did it, with Gator, Joe, Walt, Tuna, and Cal showing the way. These were the Raiders Top Guns, always to be remembered when the Grey Ghost Cruise of 65-66 is recalled in sea stories for many a year to come. ,, ..v,.,-.C-vwvege-2:::ff:f:,'2?'?i1T-15!:5f in vf f ,ff f W X Mfg 4 705 fi si, ,Z 'pjfsgfv J CWM 'am' W 5 i'fk....J'? .x X U S 'ix Q tb M Left to Right Front Row: Andregg, STG2g Johnson, Miller, FTG25 Henry, STG2, Sisco, FTG3g Challas, STG35 Ribble, STGSN, Bailey, FTG3, Landis, STG3g STGSN, McDermott, FTG3, Dixon, FTG2g Webster, Bowman, STG3g Osborne, FTC. Although a ship must operate as ateam, the duties of individuals vary immensely, For Fox Division, this is expecially true, with Sonarmen, Torpedomen, and Fire Controlmen . . . . all represented within the di- vision. From the underwater safe- guarding by the Sonarmen, and close association with the Torpedomen in carrying out ant-submarine war- fare: to the excellent performance in shore bombardment by the Fire Controlmen, there is never a dull moment in this division. fy , gl,-rr '-7-5. The division's primary responsibilities include electrical power, lighting, inter-communications systems, gyro compass systems, air conditioning and ventilation. In addition, R Division is always willing to assist other divisions with any repairs that are beyond their capability. Perhaps most important, R Division is in charge of damage control functions aboard EDSON with their Division personnel the key men in the ship's repair parties. R Division's contribution to EDSON's safe and continuous steaming in WestPac can best be summed up by their motto, if we can't fix it, nobody can. f. , . Two rates working together as a team are now, two separate and distinct divisions, the Electronic Technicians making up OE Division and the Radarmen OI Division. OE Division became EDSON's 10th division on 1 February 1966. Q The Radarmen in Combat work to assist the bridge and their work varies from general steaming watches to Naval Gunfire Support Co- ordination. You can also call Combat an intelligence center with OP Orders and plans always available. Chief Waclaw's Technicians made this all possible by keeping the equipment in peak condition. His leading P. It became the ship's official trademark at the Change of Command ceremony on 10 February 1966 and is now emblazoned in the ship's flag which flies smartly before the breeze during special underway evolutions. It reflects the spiritgof EDSON, the smart shiphandling on the bridge, the perfect maneuvering solution from Combat, the thundering wake of 70,000 horses delivered from below decks, the record times for replenishments, and the deafening roar of a deadly gun delivering our knockout punch. These were a few of the oper- ations EDSON performed with speed, effectiveness and military thorough- ness. In six months time EDSON became known throughout the South China Sea as The Grey Ghost of the Vietnam Coast. This title was largely due to an incident in which EDSON harrassed the V. C. in one area only to turn up one hour later 25 miles away to harrass them at a different point. y y It was a hard WestPac that showed the true toughness of EDSON sailors. Working 18-20 hours a day became a routine with never a major breakdown. All can be proud of EDSON and her men, for they shone brightly out here in a sea of ships. if i 'eff' 1 we if iizfi f. Liberty was short but EDSON lg sailors made the most of it in their traditional manner, donating blood in Yokosuka, and Hong Kong. Tours were conducted in Hong Kong, .Taiwan, Japan, and Hawaii with a large turnout of Picture-Snapping ,Q EDSON sailors.
