HAYNES USN Commanding Officer From the Commanding Officer: USS EDSON sailed from Long Beach, California on March 13, 1964 and returned on October 2, 1964 having logged 48,000 miles and spent 153 days at sea. Throughout the long and arduous cruise this beautiful ship and cheerful crew met every commitment with unfailing regularity. The Cruise was highlighted by visits to Kaohsiung, Hong Kong, Yokosuka, and many visits to your southeast Asia home in Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines. For forty- three days we steamed in the South China Sea supporting T ICONDEROGA and actions in the Gulf of Tonkin on August 2-5, 1964. There was never any doubt in my mind that to- gether we would have acquitted ourselves well in battle and it was a disappointment that the opportunity was not presented in which to prove it. We shall always remember the pitch black night of August 4 when at 0130 General Quarters was sounded and battle stations were manned and ready in slightly more than two minutes. The targets were shortly identified as a friendly submarine and innocent fishing boats, but we were read y. lt has been an honor and a pleasure to serve as your Commanding Officer. To those of you who will soon leave the Naval Service for other fields l Wish you good luck and God- speed. To those of you who have chosen the Navy as a career and will remain to serve your countr I e ' ' ' I y Xpress my sincerest appreciation and the hope that we shall be shipmates again. dig!! .
