HAYNES USN Commanding Officer From the Commanding Officer: USS EDSON sailed from Long Beach, California on March 13, 1964 and returned on October 2, 1964 having logged 48,000 miles and spent 153 days at sea. Throughout the long and arduous cruise this beautiful ship and cheerful crew met every commitment with unfailing regularity. The Cruise was highlighted by visits to Kaohsiung, Hong Kong, Yokosuka, and many visits to your southeast Asia home in Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines. For forty- three days we steamed in the South China Sea supporting T ICONDEROGA and actions in the Gulf of Tonkin on August 2-5, 1964. There was never any doubt in my mind that to- gether we would have acquitted ourselves well in battle and it was a disappointment that the opportunity was not presented in which to prove it. We shall always remember the pitch black night of August 4 when at 0130 General Quarters was sounded and battle stations were manned and ready in slightly more than two minutes. The targets were shortly identified as a friendly submarine and innocent fishing boats, but we were read y. lt has been an honor and a pleasure to serve as your Commanding Officer. To those of you who will soon leave the Naval Service for other fields l Wish you good luck and God- speed. To those of you who have chosen the Navy as a career and will remain to serve your countr I e ' ' ' I y Xpress my sincerest appreciation and the hope that we shall be shipmates again. dig!! . Following duties as Gunnery Offi- cer of the USS NICHOLAS and staff duty with Commander, Destroyer Division 32, he took command of the USS MATACO QATF-365. Prior to assuming duties of Executive Officer of EDSON in July 1963 he attended the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode lsland. Relieyed by LCDR L. S. MARSH as Executive Officer in September, he proceeded to take command of USS MCMORRIS QDE-10365. 1 . 1 Y C CCDMDESRON I3 A capt. Ho. REAVES, Jr., usN From the Commodore: The "Let's Do" spirit in EDSGN has been an inspiration and a challenge for the "Black Cat" Squadron. From our snappy sortie on 13 March, through the battle of Tonkin Gulf, the vigil off Danang and our eventual return on 2 October, it has been a comfort and a privilege to have my pennant flying from such a fine ship. Much more is done in these below deck spaces for they hold the heart of the engineering plant- the main boilers. Here the start of all the propulsive power, some 70,000 hp. is generated. To maintain and operate these spaces demands a great deal of hard Work, uncomfortable watches, and great deal of know-how. The EDSON's BT's have distinguished themselves during this cruise providing the steam to make us go, whenever or wherever. Q 12 " ' 2' -s.. H01 -. You can get started on that stanchion over there." Practically every new seaman who comes to EDSON has been greeted in a manner similar to this, signifying his entry into the DECK GANG, Chip and Paint and Chip and Paint: this is a familiar First Di- vision chant. But all of the seemingly endless chipping and painting has paid off in a smart, clean ship in which the deck force can take justified ride. ' P Of course, there are other things the First has to do: Two boats to keep up and operate, watches to stand, and refueling and replenishments at sea. When the command is given the roar of 5-inch and 3-inch mounts is enough to make any enemy think twice before coming any closer. lt is Second Division's responsibility to see that the ship's guns are ready to respond to this command at all times. Their abilities are varied between Fire Control Technicians, Sonarmen and Torpedomen. These three ratings compose a vital portion of the weapons department of EDSGN. For the FT's, jobs concerning the maintenance and upkeep of all fire control equipment is of major importance. The Sonarmen rely upon their skill, and together with the T M's carry out the responsibilities of the ship's entire Anti-Submarine Warfare system. The radar men play amajor part in assuring that the ship quickly and accurately exe- cutes the complex and often radical maneuvers that screening ships are called upon to make, From radio and radar the RDS take information, put it on maneuvering boards or the DRT, and use their skill and training to come up with the course speed, CPA, ETA, Datum position--Whatever information is needed by the conning officer. The ETs maintain the radar and radio equipment which allows the radarmen to per- form their magic. And they lend a hand on most of the electronic equipment on the ship. They are the men who come on the run when you cannot raise Big Boy, or the picture on the scope is out. Together they make a major contribution to the EDSON's operational capability. .. That plan of the day is yeomen's work, as is the entry in your service record and the letter the Captain sends out. They have plenty of paper Work -- but they keep up with it. The star gazers, or the QMS, are charged with keeping up with the position of the ship. By loran, by radar fixes and by their .specialty of star sights and sun lines. They plot the position of the ship, and send their eight o'clock posits to the Commodore and the Commanding Officer. The Signalmen are part of the communications team along with the r adiom e n. To- gether, they are the voice of command receiving orders and information via flashing light and fleet broadcasts. The communicators have a position of trust and responsibility -- and they carry out their duties in a manner in which any ship in the fleet could justly be proud. , i -1 fm lv li '1 . The following pages will show some of the places we visited and enjoyed while on deployment. ' Most of all, however, we must state why we were in the Western Pacific, and the following message of Vice Admiral Roy L. Johnson, Commander, U. S. Seventh Fleet to the homeward bound ships gives the reason explicitly. "The manner in which you have carried out your many and varied assignments during this deployment indicate a team of dedicated professionals engaged in purposeful employment. Your conduct during Gulf of T onkin operations and special operations in the South China Sea have been particularly noteworthy, Well Done, Good Luck, and Best Wishes for a most pleasant voyage home."
