This year’s activities introduced some new events to Edsel students. These activities included hat day, during which students and teachers alike were encouraged to don their favorite derby or Stetson; what you want to be when you grow up day. which populated Edsel’s halls with future doctor’s, lawyers, and gourmet chefs: favorite Hollywood actor or actress day: Scarlett O’Hara, John Wayne, and Humphrey Bogart were reborn through the creativity and imagination of Edsel’s students. Cuddles day brought out the little kid that dwells within each high school student. Edsel’s student body relived childhood memories by toting around their favorite stuffed animal. Black and White day, which ended the week, was the usual rousing success. A tug of war between the classes was held October 6. This usually smooth-running event was marred by controversy this year. The seniors apparently took the victory, then, weeks iater, the freshmen class announced that they were the actual winners. The seniors claimed that the freshmen had illegally recruited sophmores and juniors for their winning team, thus disqualifying them from the competition. “Of course the seniors won. because they are superior,” explained Senior Class President Steve Bomyasz. 0MRB9RN mHIBAIf OPPOSITE PAGE: TOP LEFT: Meredith Greenwood dreams of a naval future. The tradition consisted of a football game, a dance and a court complete with queen. The 1982 Homecoming Queen is senior Shelly Moran. Her court consisted of fellow classmen Donna Capilla, Kristi Davis. Cathy Jones and Leanne Yunker. Their escorts, provided by the Varsity Club, were seniors Scott Klassa. Dominic Nieto, Mike Ouellette, Pat Ouellette and Darin Simmons. The yearly event also brought two other inter-school competitions to a climax: the banner contest between the clubs and the float contest between the classes. This year the Tri-M Club swept the banner contest and the senior class exhibited the best float. The dance was sponsored by the Senior Class with the theme “We’ve Only Just Begun.” The attendants were entertained by a band entitled Stride. Moran was crowned at half-time of the game by the 1981 Queen, Maureen O’Leary. Huge Success An overflow crowd was on hand at Edsel Ford’s field to enjoy the Homecoming festivities. Both the band and the Thunderettes entertained the crowd for the remainder of the half-time after the crowning. Queen Shelly Moran summed up her feelings concerning Homecoming by stat- ing. “I was very honored to be nominated and especially to win. I was shocked and I’m very happy.” OPPOSITE PAGE TOP: The beautiful 1982 Homecoming Court, from left to right: Leanne Yunker, Donna Capilla, Shelly Moran, Cathy Jones, and Kristi Davis. Human Relations Unique Course Teaches Students How to Relate Human relations is a special course, unique to Edsel Ford. The class is held on alternating days with physical education for all four grade levels. Its main purpose is to provide students with an awareness of human behavior. The freshmen program, new this year, gives the student a thorough orientation of the building and then provides course planning for the rest of his high school program. Sophomores investigate career opportunities to help them set up educational goals. Juniors spend the year learning about the various facets of human psychology. Finally, the senior class devotes the year to discussing such important topics as marriage, college, taxes and living on a budget. Mr. Dawson, chairperson of the human relations department, commented, “I believe the human relations program at Edsel Ford meets the needs of students that otherwise would not be met, such as studying practical psychology, money matters, and educational careers. “Counselors also have the chance to observe their counselees in a classroom environment. We get to know them better and see where their weak and strong points are. We would not get that chance otherwise.” OPPOSITE PAGE-TOP ROW: Human relations teachers Mr. Bartz, Mr. Irwin, Miss Brown, Mr. Skodack and Miss Ammons. Their skills are being formed and refined by the gifted art department headed by Mr. Ralph Hashoian, and his associates, Robert LeVeque and Grant Mackenzie. From the culinary expertise of Mrs. Janet Bodenmiller and Mrs. Karen Clements, to the artistic and child care talents of Mrs. Carol Bocskay, the home economics department has a well rounded roster of educational and fun classes in these areas. For the first-time cook, there is a course especially designed for them. Food Fundamentals teaches the basics of the kitchen life. Beginning Gourmet moves into the more difficult aspects of cooking. For instance, can you put an ice cream cake in the oven without melting it? Other courses offered by the home economics department are Interior De- corating, Child Development, and Clothing and Tailoring. But not at Edsel Ford. The math department at EF includes a thorough and diverse selection of courses, ranging from consumer math for beginners to pre-calculus for the expert. Edsel Ford students are required to take one semester of math in order to graduate, but math oriented pupils can take various math classes all through high school. The math department is headed by Mrs. Major and includes nine other competent educators. The business department at Edsel Ford is one of the manv educational opportunities students can participate in. The department is headed by chairperson LaVeme Motter and the various courses within the depart- ment are taught by instructors Robert Bergen, Miss Major, Miss Majstrovich, Mrs. McFarlin and Mrs. Shea. The department offers such courses as co-operative training, bookeeping, dis- tributive education, shorthand, typing, data processing and record keeping. The science department, chaired by Mr. Ralph Cornell, hosts a variety of courses such as chemistry, physics, horticulture, biology, natural science, and environmental education. Each course outlines a different aspect of the scientific world. Contrary to popular belief, science isn’t just frogs and one-celled organisms. Biology and natural science are offered in the tenth grade. These classes are the basis for subsequent study. Chemistry, an eleventh grade course, makes use of the all-important Periodic Table of Elements and mixing chemicals for twenty weeks. Physics is an elective course which involves experiments to prove the physical laws of nature. Horticulture and environmental education are two more elective courses. These classes involve the study of plant life and the environment. Social Studies A Cultural Experience Culture is a way of life, the learned way in which a group of people satisfy their basic needs. This idea is the basis of social studies at Edsel Ford. Ninth grade entails ancient history. Ancient civilizations such as Egypt, China, or India and their progress through history are studied. Tenth grade begins with the study of anthropology. Students learn about the cultures of people around the world. This subject leads to the culture of the American people, from the discovery of the New World to the Western Ex- pansion in the second semester of tenth grade, continuing to the time of the Industrial Revolution through WWI1, studied in eleventh grade. Next on the agenda is government and economics, taught in twelfth grade. This course deals with the rise and decline in these areas. Also available is sociology, a twelfth-grade elective course designed to deal with American society, its people, their way of life and their religion. The chairman of the department is Mr. Thomas Barrett. Other teachers in this division are David Balfour. Karen Clements. Ronald Coebly. Robert Dal- ton. Patrick Daly. Robert Dillingham. A1 Harris. Chase Harrison and Lynn Langley. 36 Co-op Co-op Builds Future Employees In depressed economic times, it becomes a necessity for some students to obtain a job while still in high school. For others, a job can convey the satisfaction of having one’s own money to spend. For students with either of those needs or wants, the Co-op program was created. Headed by Mrs. Laveme Motter, the co-op program assists the working student in keeping up with his studies while maintaining a paying job. Students working on the co-op program hold jobs at the Food Ranch Super Market in Allen Park. Brother’s Formal Wear in Dearborn. Students are required to participate in gym classes every other day, taking advantage of both Thunderbird gymnasiums and also the swimming pool. A new program was introduced this year in the form of mini-courses. These courses help alternate with a student’s regular gym class, and those offered in the physical education Students Physically Fit department were very popular. Some of this year’s mini-courses were: Team Sports; Water Sports; Racquet Sports; Fitness for Life; and Leadership Training. The teachers in the Physical Education department are Mrs. Irma Calvisi, Mrs. Carole Eloff, Mr. Arnold Domke, Mr. Ron Monson, Mr. Norman Schultz and Mr. Pat Wyka. LAi'AJJWMt Bolt, FLIGHT Keep Edsel Students Aware The Bolt has had a long-lasting tradition of printing exceptional journalism and has added editorials, cartoons, regular sports and feature columns and other specialties to its straight-news format. Also, the Bolt has published a monthly supplement. The Monthly Review. The paper is a potpourri of “anything that isn’t regular Bolt material,” as Monthly Review editors Pat Eagan, 12, and Kevin Perri, 12, stated it. The paper has had controversial issues and it has usually been highly acclaimed by the students. While the efforts of the Bolt class are published on a weekly basis, the FLIGHT staff must wait until early June to see its finished product. The yearbook class starts work in early September and works straight through to Easter. After two weeks of rest, the class goes back to work, preparing for the following year’s book. Besides planning other tasty trips for later in the year, the club planned a bake sale and practiced the art of preparing fine cuisines in the Edsel kitchens. Treasurer Maria Franchi commenting on a successful year said, “We had a lot of fun. 1 would recommened the club to anyone who appreciates good food.” Edsel's Art Club is under the creative leadership of Mr. Robert LaVeque for the first time. It's not fair, it's not time, by God there's no justice, Please Lord, bring back our buddies who trust us, Were the wishes and thoughts of all that sad day, When Mike and Scott were taken away. As reality hits hard, the intensity grows, How do you cope-NOBODY KNOWS. The feeling of loss-the hurt that keeps aching. Let it be, don't deny it, there is no mistaking. As a few days go by, think some good thoughts each day, Remembering Scott and Mike you might say- Thank you for sharing your lives with us all, WE KNOW you didn't plan to leave on short call. Maybe-just maybe, they'll be hanging around, In a smile or a hug from some good friends you 've found. Through your sharing and caring and being so tender, Scott and Mike left you something You will always remember. Another highlight consisted of the players showing team pride, as many shaved their heads in preparation for the Fordson game. Senior tri-captains Sean Day, Greg Milczuk, and Mike Sanson had the leadership ability to keep the team fired up at all times. First Year Kickers Show Potential Edsel’s tirst year soccer team ended up with an almost .500 average and an All-City title, beating rival teams Dearborn and Fordson. These wins also allowed Edsel to send five of its teammates to be named to the Press and Guide All-City soccer selections. Seniors Darin Simmons, Thuy Tran, Keith Voigt, Doug Tyson and Matt Grueber were the lucky five. ‘‘1 think our team did great for a first year! quoted Darin Simmons, Edsel’s net-man. This year is also a first for coach John Supric. He coached Edsel’s girls soccer as well as bovs. Tri-captains for the 1982-83 soccer season were seniors Pete Colovas. Keith Voigt and Matt Grueber. Junior Varsity Sports Establish New Role With the addition of the ninth grade to Edsel Ford, the junior varsity sports program has taken a new role. While the freshmen sports begin to prepare young students for further athletics, the junior varsity program now serves as a stepping stone from the freshment sports level to the varsity sports level. Because captain duties are often rotated each week, junior varsity sports also give individuals a chance to prove themselves in leadership responsibilities. As usual, the junior varsity program was well-accepted this year at Edsel Ford. Not only did the teams fare well in their respective areas, but the turnout in terms of try-outs and games was tremendous. Leading the way, the j.v. football team had a super year, finishing with an undefeated season while, additionally, capturing the league championship. Boys’ basketball also produced a good season as it wound up with a 10-10 record. The junior varsity ladies did not fare as well as the men. Volleyball compiled a 12-6 record, field hockey a 0-7-1 record, basketball a 7-13 record and tennis recorded a total of eight victories.
