Living proof of this maxim includes new library equipment, providing a variety of audio-visual techniques. In addition, he hopes to see Edsel Ford on a variable schedule with time for block periods, lectures, and small discussion groups. But such re-scheduling would never happen if it were not for Assistant Principal Ross Slabaugh, who this year scheduled the greatest number of students to attend EF. Exercising control over the “working” of such a plan would be Mr. Robert Fedoruk, newest administrator. Edsel Ford’s assistant principal, Mr Robert Fedoruk. assumes one of his many new responsibilities, supervising school activities, as he helps Mr. Stanley Smith collect sophomore Mark Nadas’ Welcome ticket. 12 One of Mr. Schreiber’s most important concerns is the installation of modem audio visual devices. The library listening equipment is one of these. Finding a rare moment to take a break “together are three EFsecretaries: Mrs. Dorothy Kurtz, whose primary responsibilities are to Mr Schreiber; Mrs. Lorraine Young, who works in both the main and student offices; and Mrs. Ann Bavier. who. handles teacher substitutes. Assistant Principal Ross Slabaugh contemplates the computer’s efficiency in recording daily attendance data for EF’s 2000 students 13 ART LeVeque takes sabbatical leave New materials and techniques enrich the art program. For example. Art 2, a ceramic unit, allows students to create ceramic jars with lids and to learn to prepare their own glazes, creating individualistic colors. In the graphic art classes, multicolored block prints 3re replacing the traditional single color prints. While on sabbatical leave, Mr. Robert LeVeque, in addition to continuing his studies in New York, will travel to Europe and photograph paintings for the humanities. Finally, Mrs. Judy Garber, who is replacing Mr. LeVeque, has introduced the combination of the relief and intaglio processes in the graphic art units. By adding the third color to his multi-colored print, Jim Parchert completes one of the projects in graphic arts. The mundane can sometimes stifle creativity. Mr. Ralph Hashoian searches for a box of staples as Lynda Hart wick laughs at his dilemma. 14 ABOVE: While demonstrating the correct procedure in using a potter’s wheel. A new workroom, B-100, maintains the new Data Processing machines. Three classes meet each morning under the direction of Miss Pituch and Mr. Feusse, in which students are taught how to operate the key punch, the sorter, the accounting machine 402, and the reproducer; all of which compute various problems. With the increased use of computers today, students who plan to make computer programming their work find this course valuable. Accuracy is an essential part of key punching Completing a class assignment. Dennis Olson processes information onto IBM cards and at the same time increases his ability to operate the key-punch machine. 16 BUSINESS EDUCATION. Front Row Mrs. Ruth Blair (DECA Co sponsor. Although many of the selections have been a part of the Humanities 5-6 program, the organizing of them into one “single” text has been a goal of those teaching this level, particularly Mrs. Muriel Hunt who assumed the responsibility of organizing such an overwhelming task, for many years. Although a difficult and time-consuming effort, the advantage of using material chosen by those using them was more than ample compensation. The putting together of the new Humanities 5 anthology involved individual effort Pete Burkhard and Jerry Johnson compare texts after completing their turns in the maze of tables on which stacks of individual pages were arranged chronologically. Junior Chuck Sikora and counselor Mrs. Almerene Kaufman attempt to assemble a workable schedule. The counselors of Edsel Ford are investigating the possibility of altering the Human Relations’ curriculum. If revised, the curriculum will center more directly on the students’ individual problems and questions, involving the discussion of teenage issues. This program of personal concern, if adopted, will be initiated with sophomores. An independent study program has been more fully developed within the past year. This program allows a student, with a special talent or interest, to work with a teacher on a one-to-one basis. The project is chosen by the student, and he may receive credit or work for the pure enjoyment of learning. Presently, there are about twenty-five students participating in this specialized program. A tranquil moment in the guidance office is shared by Mrs. Jan Flegle. senior Julie Austin, and Mr. Alan Dawson as they reminisce the main events that were captured by last year s yearbook. 20 Counselor Mr. Ronald Doherty assists senior Denise Drabek as she begins to formulate her college cirriculum at Henry Ford Community College. They not only changed positions, but they changed homes and household pets. The change benefited not only the instructors, but the students as well. Mrs. Sandra Cook, and Miss Betty Lee. 24 supplement audio-visual equipment In our advanced technological society, with the emphasis on subject matter, a knowledge explosion has been talcing place. Today’s modern library must not only concern itself with books, but with slides, films, projectors, tapes, tape recorders, microfilm, and reader-printers. It must have an audio-visual distribution center, library classrooms and conference rooms. However, the staff of Edsel Ford feels their concerned efforts to cope with today’s needs are somewhat stifled by a lack of space, an understaffed library, and a lack of necessary funds. Edsel Ford students take advantage of available audio-equipment, such as the wireless listening device, and peruse periodicals always on file. 25 MATHEMATICS Computer-programming Studying the computer terminal keyboard, senior Tim Sequin prepares to program this newly acquired machine. 26 opportunity encourages individual study Senior Mike Verb glances at one of the many bulletin boards; this one gives an engineering equation that twelfth grade math students should be able to solve. MATH DEPARTMENT Front Row Mrs Ixirrame VanDette. Mr Orlando Byers. Mrs Patricia Major. Second Row Mr Richard Backensto. Miss Beverly Sakmcy (Booster dub Co-Sponsor). Mr. Graham Porter (Department Chairman). Mr Richard A Iverson One of the most interesting new aspects of the Math department concerns the 12th grade Illinois Math classes. They are involved in a new self-instructing computer programing class, which is on an individual basis outside of class time. Presently Edsel Ford maintains one computer terminal with hopes of acquiring others. Next semester juniors as well as seniors, will be exposed to this computer terminal. As an additional math activity, students may prepare interesting bulletin boards containing mathmatical equations and brain teasers. The artistic and ingenious student is encouraged to present new approaches to problems in a pleasant organized manner. Like many others who are sometimes in doubt, sophomore Marilyn Bailey requests assistance from Miss Beverly Salancy concerning homework 27 INSTRUMENTAL Successful program necessitates effort The T-Birds step high as the marching band signals the start of a new season with its complicated routines. The band comes to life under the direction of drum major David Bye as he leads the spirited group onto the field. As fall draws to a close, the concert band starts its rehearsals for the upcoming winter season. Along with the concert band, the orchestra makes its debut. To highlight the basketball games, there is the pep band; to provide entertainment of a lighter sort, the dance band takes the stage. Effort is the key word in all areas of instrumental music and is the byword of director Eldon Scott. Concert band would not be complete without the low harmonious sounds of the sousaphone. Roger Weininger. Bruce Jarvie, and Rick Harlow demonstrate enthusiasm makes the difference in a good performance. Majorettes and band at attention mark the start of a home football game as all pay their respect to the Star-Spangled Banner. ” After which the band makes a sharp right flank and proceeds to the stands in double file. Unity plays a vital role in every performance. While in concert formation, the band must give drum major David Bye its full cooperation and undivided attention. 28 A squad of four is an important part of the marching organization. Each member must learn to function as one unit, which means hours of strenuous practice. Jim Baranowski. Steve Boatin. Mark Papineau. and Ken Rogers, one such unit in this year 's marching band, take part in one of the many sessions held on the outdoor practice court. VOCAL MUSIC Choirs perform more concerts Busses loaded with all levels of singers could be on their way to the Martin school for the retarded or to one of the local junior highs. Sponsor Terry Theis feels this is only one way of building a strong senior chorus. “If one lets a sophomore sing and participate, he becomes more involved in music.” This year sopened more musical doors for sophomores as everybody was eligible to try out for the musical, “Haifa Sixpence.” Fall and winter concerts rounded out the musical programs, highlighted by the school Christmas assembly. °ne °f Me enjoyable activities of the Junior Chorus this year is a sing-along with Andrea Swiger, Kim Shunkwiler. Katrinka Burrows and Vicki Sandie. Many studenti, as Kim Shunkwiler demonstrates share their instrumental ability with the group. a ng‘t!e Vocal Ensemble in several Christmas songs during the Christmas Concert tyVss P e PurPosc of this concert was to get the whole student body of hdsel Ford in the swing of Christmas. Later on during the school day this ffoup wandered through the halls singing their cheerful songs. 30 A small section from the Senior Vocal Ensemble spread the spirit of Christmas to other students throughout the school. The members of the ensemble have to practice for many hours to develop their pleasant sounding voices. Everybody joins in to sing with Mr. Terry1 Theis faring the second hour elective music course. Since this is an elective course many fine voices are developed in this class, which later strengthen the junior and senior choir poups. 31 OPERATIONAL STAFF Diversified tasks demand ingenuity Mrs. Anne Bavier helps with the averaging of grades and the copying of student records that wUl be sent to employers or college admission offices. Buford, who delights and amuses many students, has even once been scheduled into classes and has occupied a place in the index directory of the yearbook. The question arises as to whether or not Buford is an asset to the department. In keeping with the Science Department’s recent trend to use more live animals for experimentation, it is believed that Buford could be a good candidate for an intensive study of behavioral patterns; this then could justify the cost of his care. Expense is a concern, but it is justified when the animals can be used for studies in addition to beautifying the school grounds. Under the guidance of Science Department Chairman, Mr. Joseph Motillo, Senior Cindy Woodley conducts an experiment that should prove Isaac Newton’s second law of motion. To Mr. Motillo s dismay some studemts arrive at different conclusions than those of Mr. Newton‘s. Student error and equipment, not as accurate as it could be, contribute to their incredible theories. Not many people know that there have been bees in the school for the last five years, but Cindy lovan has discovered that they arc kept in a man-made cage in B-l 11 and are used for many senior experiments. Teaching the essentials of world governments is Mr. Neville Walker, who is explaining the difference between presidential and parliamentary forms of government. 38 to continue Shared Learning Program Economic classes acquire new comparative’ system text Because of the success of last year’s student exchange with Northeastern High School of Detroit, the Social Studies Department, under the direction of Mr. Patrick Daly, has decided to continue this Shared Learning Program. The department would like to involve different schools each year; therefore, schools being considered this year are Northwestern of Detroit and schools in Inkster. Another added feature of the Social Department is the introduction of a new twelfth grade text, “Comparative Economic Systems,” which compares the economic systems of the USSR and the United States as well as the Eskimo and the Indian economic systems. The department chose this book because it consists of material from current magazines and books and gives students a chance to solve problems. Engrossed in deep thought, senior Wendy Sample contemplates answers to different political situations such as revising the electoral college or abandoning it altogether. SOCIAL STUDIES. Mr. Connors, electronics teacher, explains how to operate the many control panels in the classroom to his Electronics I class. 40 VOCAL ARTS Programs require patience, ingenuity Variety marks the offerings in the vocational arts area. At one extreme there is the strenuous work of tearing down an automobile engine; while, on the other hand, there is the delicate task of putting the final touches on a dress. Familiar sights and sounds of this department include the rhythmic clicking of the printing plates, the ever-changing decor of the “living room” in the homemaking department, the lines of cars waiting to be repaired by auto shop, and the wood and metal projects that often take awards in the industrial annual contests. Mr. Johnston enjoys chess and he feels his club helps students to use logic and concentrate on confronting forces. MORE -CHESS CLUBS New clubs encourage educational interests The Chess club and MORE are two new clubs available to students. The members of the Chess club range from eight to ten students depending on other school activities. The sponsor, Mr. Johnston, is at every meeting to give advice and encourage new members. The Chess club competes annually with Fordson and Dearborn High. MORE was started for those students who enjoy reading, but seldom have the opportunity to discuss more than one novel during an average semester. The meetings, sponsored by Miss Kovatch and Mr. Holtgrieve, consist of a guest speaker, who discusses a book he feels had a great influence on this generation. Junior Bart Mo berg cautiously moves his knight as opponent sophomore Dave billion contemplates his countermove. sophomores Richard Hogue and Len Kurdziet patiently search the chessboard for other possible moves in this game 46 Mr. Horst Zimmermann captures the attention of seniors Val Rousse and Gary’ Moore, and sponsor Miss Grace Kovatch as he discusses the controversial novel. 1984”. This must be delivered without notes and last from seven to ten minutes. Standard equipment for all debaton is an organized comprehensive file of research material. This file becomes larger as the year progresses as senior David Norris, the winner of a second place negative speaker award, concludes. 48 DEBATE FORENSICS Competitors aware of printed word Argumentation, analysis, reasoning, organization, and research of materials are needed for discussion in the competitive class of Debate. With only four members debating at one time, two negative and two affirmative, a lot of team work is needed. Debate provides good training for all students going into law, business, or just trying to improve logic skills. The debators work on the same topic, chosen by the Michigan Forensics Association for all Michigan schools, the whole year. They compete with other Michigan schools throughout the year. The competitive class of Forensics, offered in the spring, improves the process of communication. This course, open to everyone, is fairly new and is growing tremendously. Through interpretations, reading, radio broadcasting, and original oratory, students are able to relate to the printed page as the author intended. A multiple reading of the play, “Twelve Angry Men, was of great interest to the male members of Forensics, because only the boys can interpret the material used. These participants must present a fifteen minute cutting. Students interested in helping others participate in the group projects for Hi-Y and Y-Teens. Hi-Y, strictly a male organization, has taken on many projects that are beneficial to both club members and the student body. A few of the projects included were selling bumper stickers and sponsoring a Dad’s Club card party. An all female organization, Y-Teens, has dedicated its projects this year toward making children at home and abroad happy. A Christmas party, for the less fortunate children from the Salina area, and a canister drive for UNICEF were among their projects. The combined bodies want many changes. Though this year’s efforts seemed to be centered on the dress code, it was only a token issue. What the students and their government want is some authority and voice in school affairs; a voice to be reckoned with and not ignored. Many members of Edsel's student government pressed for a liberalized dress code. As a result of their efforts, Assistant Principal Robert Fedoruk foresees changes in next year's dress code. Although anxious for immediate changes, students became reconciled with assurances of changes in 1970-71; previous committments to the 1969-70 dress code must be held. Because of the efforts of student government, the following year promises to close even more that communication gap between students, faculty, and administration. Executive council members Robin Curiak. Jeff Muzyk. Dean Masouredis. and Vicki Becker review and discuss the school dress code in hopes of finding a happy medium that will satisfy both the student body and the school board EXECUTIVE COUNCIL. Articles reflect current 62 political problems of interest to students Sports writer Norman De Angelis and copyreader John Piegza scrutinize final copy before sending it to the print shop for publication. Politics has been a key issue this past year in world news, and the BOLT, Edsel's bi-weekly newspaper, is not to be out-done. Both sides of the political spectrum are represented in each issue. Crystal Yarlott holds the liberal fort in her column Orange- Aid, while the staffs conservative spokesman is Ann Woodcock. The BOLT staff is proud of the photographic prowess of Steve Rishel-epitomized in a November 1969 issue, featuring pictures taken during the Peace March on Washington. The sports page is a favorite of most students, due mainly to the always informative, often amusing, “Time Out,” By Norm De Angelis. Under the direction of Editor Becky Brough, each member of the staff works as part of a precision mechanism-designed for the sole purpose of providing Edsel Ford with a newspaper relevant to the needs and interests of the students. The extremely steady and skilled hands of Dave Span burg and Pat Masi accurately cut away the excess paper on copy, cut lines, and pictures. These items are needed in paste ups for the deadline. The organization of senior pictures is one of the many time consuming tasks of Co-editor Denise Guido. Putting pictures in alphabetical order is not the hardest part though, it’s keeping them in order that presents the problems. 64 Advice becomes necessary for all members of the yearbook staff, causing frequent line ups. As an elective credit class, the yearbook staff gains needed hours enabling more work to be done. This hour is used to get pictures taken and developed, copy and cutlines written and typed, interviews conducted, and paste-ups completed. As always, many problems arise which end up being solved in group and individual conferences. Many membeis of the yearbook staff work extra hours before and after school, on weekends, and even during vacations. All members of the staff get a chance to develop their particular talents, as well as acquire new skills. Patience, cooperation, and organization are needed to produce a winning yearbook, that the '70 staff hopes to create. 65 BOOSTER CLUB Females dominate Booster club inspires school spirit by painting gaily-colored signs and hanging them in Thunder bird Hall. The attainment of the club’s goal, the support of all athletic events, involves many things. The money-making projects include the selling of pom-poms and Thunderbird buttons. These included the collectiong of funds to make possible the renaming of the pool in Coach Fred Evans’ memory, sponsoring the pep assemblies, i.e., starting the tradition of a cake-eating contest preceding a grme with Dearborn High and holding the Southeastern Golden Gloves semi-finals in which a substantial number of Edsel Ford boxers participated. The Varsity club uses many of its assets to buy athletic equipment and other fixtures for the school. Becky Brough, Dave Rasor, and Bob Trumble have been chosen as members of the 1970 Youth for Understanding Chorale, which tours South America this summer. After rigorous tryouts with 120 of the best singers in Michigan and Ohio competing, 65 were selected. From November until June, Saturday rehearsals are held in Ann Arbor. Tiring rehearsals pay off when the Chorale is invited to sing in festivals, cathedrals, and other occasions. Seven weeks and 30 concerts later, the participants return in August knowing that three years of Edsel Ford vocal music has been well worth the time and effort. It is hard to part with a family, even after just a week. Senior Bob Trumble. also in the 1969 Chorale, leaves the Schmidt family of Braunschweig. The bout was Pantoni’s first in Golden Gloves competition. tourney at Edsel On the night of January 24, Edsel Ford’s gym was packed with nearly 2000 people. This, in itself, is not unusual. What was unusual was that standing in the center of the gym was a platform ringed with ropes and containing various pairs of half-naked, sweating, battling young men. On that night Edsel hosted the Southeastern Michigan Golden Gloves tournament semi-finals. Tire tournament included 15 bouts, two of which included fighters from Edsel. These two boxers were senior Frank Pantoni and junior Kent Weatherford. Pantoni came on strong in his bout and did such damage to his opponent that the fight was stopped in the second round. To the further delight of Edsel fans, Weatherford won a decision over his foe. Tire sponsors and organizers of the tournament were the members of the varsity club. Their greatest task was transporting the ring from the state fairgrounds. Promoting and advertising was done by the members as well, with Mr. John Davis, sponsor of the club, insisting that the boys assume the complete responsibility for this activity. They decided that the money earned from the activity will be used to replace worn-out sports equipment. Wailing for the advance of his opponent with a look of anticipation and apprehension on his face is Dearborn boxer Mark Dapkowski. Perhaps apprehension is the better term as Dapkowski lost to a TKO just forty seconds later. Junior Kent Weatherford and his opponent lock together in the.first round of the five-round fight. It was important because a man was being honored for his accomplishments both as a coach and as a man. The man was Mr. Fred W. Evans, and the event was the dedication of the Edsel Ford pool in his honor. After succumbing to injuries suffered in a car accident during the summer, plans were made by the Edsel Ford Varsity club to immoratlize the name of Fred Evans in a permanent place in the building. Since Mr. Evans was foremost in the bringing Edsel to power as a varsity swimming coach as well as assistant football coach and athletic director, the pool was chosen as the place for honoring him. One of the many speakers who helped to dedicate the pool to Fred W. Evans was Mr Thomas Barrett, a social studies teacher at Edsel Ford who knew Mr. Evans and his family for many years. Junior standout Mike Riker shows his winning take-off form that Mr. Fred Evans helped him to perfect when he started swimming at the age of nine at Ten Eyck pool. 82 LEFT: Another outstanding protege of Mr. Evans is Jim MacBeth, who has developed into a fine diver as a senior this year. A predominately junior team defeated Dearborn High 25-17 and buried the Fordson Tractors, 45-5. Defeating Dearborn was one of the most exuberating experiences the mat-men had this season. Another high point of the season was qualifying a record number of men for the state championships held in Trenton this year. These four men were A1 Taylor, a junior, 110 lbs., Jeff Olinik, a junior, 103 lbs.. Bob Wancha, a senior, 154 lbs. and junior Tom Brown, 185 lbs. Another outstanding wrestler is heavyweight Paul Cornell. Paul won the league championship for his heavyweight division, and was one of the deciding factors in the defeat of Dearborn High. Senior Co-captains Dennis Abraham and Bob Wancha always managed to get the team up for a big meet and always came through when the pressure was on. One hundred and fifty miles and three and one-half hours later, they entered an octagon-shaped building to see “Measure for Measure,” a comedy by William Shakespeare. After the three-hour presentation students were allowed to question several cast members. The students, quite satisfied that their ten dollars was well spent, returned to downtown Stratford for dinner at the many restaurants which have sprung up to serve tourists. At 9:30, still early enough to get back to homework, the students returned to Edsel. As they came home, Edselites decided that education can be fun-especially at Stratford Most Americans do not realize the difficulties foreigners must go through when entering Canada. Some of the acts included Nelson Sonders who sang. “The Look of Love,” and Donna Garcia and Michelle Stehlin who danced to “Love is Blue.” To the students' delight faculty members Mr. Addison Dixon, Mr. Robert Morency, Mr. Jesse Young and Mr. Terry Theis combined talents to form the traditional barbershop quartet. One of the evening’s hits was the impromptu skit by Undo Gancarz. During her sing-along she invited Mr. Mike Zinn to accompany. Together they made the audience sing and also laugh. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Class projects promote pride Throughout the year the senior class has helped create enthusiasm and spirit at Edsel Ford. The year began with the selling of “Senior Power” buttons and Halloween candy. The profits from the sales more than tripled the treasury. In addition, early plans and hard work proved worthwhile as the senior class homecoming float won first place. The enthusiasm never waned as they painted the bleachers as a service to the school. With energy to spare, the class began prom preparations early in the year. By January they had chosen the colors of purple and lavender; the flower, the orchid; and the song, “Love Theme from Romeo and Juliet.” Vice-President. Pam Vogel: President. John Jacksy: Secretary.
