The program receives funds through federal sources and is supervised by Ms. Pattillo, an aide at the Junior High. The room is designed to encourage students to come in on special passes to read and sign out books that are of interest to them. PAPER BACK For the second year in a row, Edmonson Junior High and Thurston Elementary are participating in a cross-age tutoring program. The tutors travel by bus, twice a week, to work with small groups and individual students on a variety of activities. Tutors are assigned to work with the students on academic skills This program owes its' success to the commitment the Edmonson tutors show towards the younger children. This program is supervised by Ms. Lirette and is a great help to both Lm students. W if E wi I Back This is the center's third year of service, but it is the first year that it's services have been available daily. This class is an elective for the 23 peer listeners. A peer listener is a person of one's own age or grade that helps you with your problem when you come down to the Student Service Center. These individuals have been through the required 40 hours training. The training took place at the Hoyt Conference Center at Eastern Michigan University. It seemed to improve the listeners skills in many areas, such as Active Listening, Empathy, Drug Abuse, Problem Solving and Eye Messages. This has been a good year for the center. Many students have used it and seem to be satisfied with the results They sometimes return to the center or even tell a friend about the help they received. We have been selling candy to get money built up in our account so we can return again this year to Eastern Michigan University for training. Appointments must be made in advance, or the student may come down with a pass from their teacher. The center is open first, second, fourth, and fifth hours. The room is 29A, so come down and see us.
