PERSPECTIVE... the theme of this book ... offering a graphic
view of life in Edmonds High ... to supplement our individual
'memories of the past year.
From the time we first entered the doors of Edmonds High
our aim was to attain a firm foundation for our growing per-
spective. Each year we advance, through diligent work and
accepted responsibility, hoping that some day with diploma in
hand we'll reach our goal.
This is the story of our perspective . . . what it is and how
Edmonds High School helped us mold it.

. . . to the students shown here, leaders all, who early found the right per-
spective and applied it successfully to their school lives. The Ball and Chain
winners in Letterwomen, May Queen Bobbe Fay, Future Farmer Frank Swan-
son—these and others caught sight, if only for a moment, of that distant star
we all hope some day to find. They also pointed the way for others in search
of a perspective. Scholastically, they were led by the Top Ten shown above.
Robion Kirby was Valedictorian, Shirley Graham was Salutatoriam Donna
Cline, also in the Top Ten, is not piclured.

fo offer in supporting his school and the famed Edmonds tradition
a tradition of warm friendliness and enthusiasm toward school un-

Bly, Deloris—
With Dave Gayman, president, at the wheel, the senior class
sped through an eventful final year. Dave got plenty of
back-seat advice from Rich Robinson, vice-president, and
Patty Griffith, secretary-treasurer, during the first semes-
ter. In the second semester, he was again assisted by Rich
and by LaDean Proue, secretary-treasurer. At press time
parents of seniors were planning an all-night commence-
ment party for the graduates.»

tricycle, were the masterminds of the freshman class. Larry
Gard served as vice-president during the first semester,
while Delbert Starkenburg acted as his second-semester
counterpart. Jerry Hillis was president during the second
semester and Dorothy Tucker, when not riding her trike,
fulfilled the office of secretary-treasurer. David Goodwin

Several of the outstanding acts were chosen to represent Edmonds High
School in an exchange assembly at Snohomish.
A controversial feature this year was the presentation of a one-act
audience-participation opera, "The Little Sweep," by Benjamin Britten.
This type opera was a "first" for Edmonds and may have been the first
of its kind presented at any American high school. Two of the roles
were taken by Julie Einarsen and Neil Grace, Edmonds students.

This year, instead of having a class play, the seniors sponsored the
fall all-school play, "Rehearsal for Death," on November 20. A play
within a play, this comedy-mystery featured strange notes, faulty
lights, anr a supposedly unloaded gun. Mr. Mischa Schwartzmann
directed the play and Carol Clouston assisted him as student director.
The second annual junior-sponsored all-school play, "The Curious
Savage," presented on April 23, concerned $10,000,000, a teddy bear,
and a mental institution. Mary Middleton held the position of student
director.

FOOTBALL PROGRAM
Paced by Lynne House!, sec-

ball Program Committee sold
more programs this year than
ever before. This is the crew that produced the 1954 Echo: Mr.
Selvidge. Allen Pilgrim, Faith Lawson, Pat Eckart,
Marilyn Bruce, Mary Middleton, Julie Einarsen,
Penny Stout, Suzie Reynolds, Anne Hallowell, Fritz
White and Liz Kirby. Not pictured: Lynne Housel, Ron
Richardson and Barbara Hildebrand.
Echo
The 1954 Echo staff dedicated itself to the
job of recording in pictures and words the
moods, activities, and events which shaped our
perspectives during the past year. It took four-
teen months to do the job-beginning in April
of '53. Getting it all into 80 pages required the
efforts of twelve "full-time" staff members and,
according to Mr. Selvidge, the finest editor he
has ever had.
RIGHT: The editorial staff. Top: Marilyn Bruce, Edi-
tor-in-Chief. Center: Faith Lawson, Copy Editor, and
Lynne Housel, Associate Editor. Bottom: Allen Pil-
grim, Sports Editor, and Ron Richardson, Art Editor.
49Advertising
Providing advertising revenue for both the Echo and the Wireless proved no
chore for this year's ad staff. They sold more ads than were needed for some
issues of the Wireless and met their quota for the Echo. They helped the
school paper win an honor award in national competition.
Those who sold advertising are shown on the opposite page. That's Norris Drake
on the front fender. Behind him. from the left, are John Hallowell, Jack Mack. Bill
Lashua, Darlene Waller. Jack Phillips, Ellen Moses, Paul Rutan (behind Ellen), Agda
Lee Train, and (standing on the running board) Mike Davis. Glynn O'Neill, Steve Worth-
ington and Jack Felzer (not pictured) joined the staff during the second semester.Wireless
''sJ
The Wireless staff published 15 issues of the school paper and one of the
May issues of the Tribune-Review, the largest publication of its type between
Seattle and the Canadian border. The four Wireless editors are shown at the
far left on the opposite page. The staff is pictured at the Seattle Times during
one of its field trips. Wireless reporters and editors were Faith Lawson, Jo
Hoffman, Donna Marson, Emilie Beaudreau, Carole Rowalt, Allen Pilgrim, Liz
Kirby, Carol Clouston, Bev Berry, Yvonne Bundy, Shirley Graham, Dwight
Offer, Bob Collins, Harry Robinson, John Collins, Len Chambers, Robion Kirby,
Blair Nelson, Bob Gromko, Arlene Harris, Nancy Moehlenpah and Barbara
Brown.

Driftwood
In deep consultation concerning Driftwood, the school literary magazine,
were Sharon Wilson, editor-in-chief; Mr. Schwartzmann, advisor, and Liz Kirby,
associate editor. The two girls were promoted to their respective positions
when Editor Arlene Harris was graduated at mid-year.
Pictured at the far left are some of the contestants in the Wireless-spon-
sored Clash Day contest. Mrs. Babcock and Mr. Blenheim copped the title of
Clashiest Teachers, while Erna Nopson and Hank Rogers received the student
honors.
51At the summit stands the goal ... the reward obtained by
work and diligence. To the Edmonds Tigers this reward came in the
form of the Northwest League football championship ... and to
those in sports who qualify in the long, hard climb, and come out
on top, goes the coveted Big E. But equally important are the per-
sonal qualities built through sports . . . qualities that shine down
the perspective of years.

reports of Trosh Coach Jerry Karnofski, center, and the
fierce line play taught by Second Team Coach Stu Smith,
a former professional football player.

Basketball
The Edmonds basketball picture was cast in a new perspective this
year,- for the first time since 1936 the Tigers won more games than
they lost. Their season record of eleven victories and ten defeats was
a credit to their new young coach, Jerry Karnofski, in his first job as
head coach. Karnofski's old job with the second team and the frosh was
filled by Coach Ernie McKie, another newcomer in the Edmonds bas-
ketball picture. The final league game saw the Tigers whipping Snoho-
mish for the first time since 1946 and throwing the Panthers into a
tie with Anacortes for the Northwest League title. Jerry Burdett won
the inspirational award. Bobby Allen, leading scorer on the team, was
voted honorary captain.

Northwest Track League. At this time, two
school records had been broken. Tom Rowen
pole vaulted 11 feet 2 inches and Warren
Lashua put the shot 50 feet 6 inches. The
Tigers excelled in the half mile, mile,

A new record was set at Edmonds High
School this year when six senior girls
earned their fifth award, the coveted ball
and chain.
Girls' turnout averaged 180 partici-
pants for each sport, except volleyball,
which drew 220 athletically minded girls.
Sophomore Doreen McReynolds won the
ping-pong championship and was badmin-
ton co-champion with Mary Jane Schatz.
The senior girls proved their prowess by
copping the speedball and volleyball
championships, while the freshmen pulled
the upset of the year, coming out on top
in basketball.

ers. The conscientious attitude of our organizations toward the
school is reflected, in small part, by sparkling drinking fountains
polished by Girls' Club-our school colors flying in pom-poms sold

at Edmonds High is cast the shadow of future leadership—growing
ever larger as we ourselves grow into a widening world-a greater
sphere of life.

Although kept busy by the Big and Little Sister Banquet, Tolo, and the Mothers' Day

their assemblies, as shown above, was a demonstration of hair styling. The Kandy Kids,
also pictured above, sold candy bars at noon and after school.
Those melodies heard above the din in the cafeteria came from the juke-box provided

throwing a roller skating party, and selling refreshments at a football game also aug-
mented the activities of the Junior and Senior FHA groups.
FFA
The Edmonds chapter of the Future Farmers of America performed a number of
jobs for the school district this year that were literally earth-moving. Both the high
school athletic field and the new school grounds at Mountlake Terrace benefited from
FFA work projects. Frank Swanson, the chapter treasurer, represented Snohomish
County at the national FFA convention in Kansas City. Mr. John Kochrian served as
