T iE I98l Jl!j 2 Therne Theme 3 Theme 5 Homecoming Pepfest Friday, October 10, 1980, the Homecoming Pepfest psyched-up Edison for the Homecoming Game. Students showed their school spirit by wearing the winning colors, blue and gold. After a contest to choose the best blue and gold outfit, Brian Person (12) won the cake for being the most unique. Another feature of the assembly was the awards to the Homecoming Marathon winners. Last years winner, Glenn Chiodo, who is an Edison graduate, came in first. The award was given to Rich Clark (12). Second and third place winners were Pat Fiega (12) and Rob Stokowski (12). The girls first place winner was Junior Lisa Cominetti, last years 3rd place finisher, making a record time. Linda Graak (11) took 2nd, and third place went home with Julie Craig (11). 6 Tftemc Parade Sophie Boutsiouskos was the grand marshall of Edison's 1980 Homecoming Parade. Floats were entered from various clubs and classes. From the floats entered, the winner for the best float contest was from the Spanish Club. The parade began on Monroe winding its way up Lowry and back down Central Avenue ending at the athletic field. Thcmc 7 Tommies Over Millers 8-0 On a cold, windy day in October, Edison crushed the Millers of Washburn in the only game played at Edison. It was Homecoming 1980. The cold weather dampened the game, but not the fans. The Edison touchdown was set up by a fumble on the Millers 15 yard line. Edison scored on a 6 yard run up the middle by Craig Wein-stock followed by a two point conversion play which found Weinstock throwing to Rozek in the end zone. At half time Edison led 8-0. The half time show consisted of the field exhibition presented by the Edison High School Marching Band and silks. In the second half drizzle fell, but not our defense, which held strong keeping the Millers scoreless. 10 Theme ‘ ‘Out of the Blue’’ It was an Edison Victory on Homecoming Day 1980 by a score of 8 to 0. After the game, alumni were invited for post game refreshments. Later that evening fifty couples paid S5.00 admittance to the Homecoming Dance held in the lunchroom. Out of the Blue played mellow music until 11:00 p.m. The dance was sponsored by the Student Council, all of whom worked hard to make a most enjoyable night for all. The chaperones were Mrs. Bout-sioukos, Mrs. Charles, Mr. Elavsky, and the Student Council advisor Mr. Schulz. Theme ll Homecoming Wednesday, October 8, 1980, with our Homecoming week shortened, the twenty-four King and Queen candidates were chosen. For Queen: Sheila Anderson, Wendy Chester, Cindy Gilbertson, Sue Hagen, Rhonda Hanson, Charla Hanstad, Paula Hoskins, Lisa Hunzelmann, Michelle Miller, Shelly Robertson, Anne Robillard, and Jackie Spano. For King: Jim Anderson, Dan Bosell, Robert Dowson, Scott Fussy, Chris Gorecki, Tim Kaczrowski, Tony Marchiafava, Brian Person, Mike Sams, Mark Uchanski, Dean Villella, and Craig Weinstock. The ten finalists were: Sheila Anderson, Wendy Chester, Michelle Miller, Shelly Robertson, Anne Robillard, Dan Bosell, Chris Gorecki, Tim Kaczrowski, Mark Uchanski, and Dean Villella. The following evening, Thursday, October 9, as the assembly progressed, the Queen finalists sat nervously awaiting the outcome, while the King finalists looked like they were either going to get sick or shot. After eighty minutes of sheer torture for the finalists, the coronation began. From last year, we had King John Schlundt and Queen Cindy Carlson there to crown their 1980 successors. After several moments of tense anticipation (and a short clip of our Magnificent Marching Band 1979 half time show). King Tim Kaczrowski and Queen Wendy Chester were crowned. 12 Theme Royalty Wendy Chester, our 1980 Homecoming Queen, has attended Edison for all three of her high school years. As a first year cheerleader, she is always on the go. Tim Kaczrowski, our 1980 Homecoming King, has also been here at Edison for three years. As a captain of the football team this year, he has plenty to do. After an injury in the first game this year, a knee operation had to be performed. Although he was put to the sidelines for the season, he still looks forward to the near future when he will again be playing the field. Theme 13 Around the World in Eighty Minutes A salute to the countries of the world, presented by the Pom-Toms, set off the 1980 Homecoming Show and Coronation entitled Around the World in Eighty Minutes. This extravaganza, produced and directed by Jack Litowsky, took place on the eve of Homecoming, October 9th, at 7:30 pm. This show consisted of various skits, such as the Lumberjacks and the Doughboys, songs by Kim Joncas and Peggie Wigen, and dances by Christelle Audette and Irene Malec. The Freshmen made their appearance, along with the fabulous dancers, La Bamba. The show was concluded by the jamming of the rock groups Black Star and Touch 'n Go. The evening ended with the crowning of King Tim and Queen Wendy. 2 3 4 14 Theme 11 1) The 1979 Homecoming Queen Cindy Carlson, King John Schlundt, and Sandy Matson. Theme 15 u U 9l Welcome Back Wednesday, September 5, welcomed us back for our 1980-81 school year. There are a few new additions to Edison High School this year. One is the new assistant principal, Mrs. Charles. Another is the new lunchroom set-up. It's set up a new way so that there might be less stealing and confusion. It caused a bit of a problem, because the lines took longer to get through. On September 26, the welcome dance was put on by the Edison Pom-Toms. Hot Ash was the band that entertained us with a great variety of Rock-n-Roll. Theme 17 Sadie Lisa Hunzelman (12) and friend Bob Gravel. 1 Juli Geske (12) and Howard Griffin (11). Sue Drysdale (12) and Pat Zebro (12). Hawkins Alumnus Todd Studer and Denise Ah-Iquist (12). Jani Abraham (12) and Mike Simon (12). Jodi Reed (12) and friend Phil Mur-lowski. Activities 20 Activities Plenty of mistletoe hung around on the night of Dec. 19, by the Edison Flag Girls who sponsored the dance. There was more puckering than dancing and everyone had a great time listening to Midwest Sound and Lighting. Activities 21 Snow Daze Assembly After the week of Snow Daze festivities, we were invited to the Snow Daze Assembly. The theme was Sno-Wonder-ful Daze . The Assembly was a wonderful showcase of Edison talent. (1) Gladys White and the Pips. (2) Don't Try Suicide (3) Jingle Bell Rock (4) Sno Daze Button. (5) On the Honeymoon (6) April Showers . Mike Graham was crowned King and Jackie Spano was Queen. Runners up for King were Tony Machifava, Mark Uchanski, Brian Person, Dean Vil-lella. Runners up for Queen were Pam Stegora, Lisa Jacobson, Michelle Miller, Sheila Anderson. 24 Activities Snow Daze Dance The Snow Daze dance took place on Jan. 16, 1981. The Band playing was T. Kail. There were many fun things going on at the carnival too. Many activities took place during the week. One of them was the snowball eating contest, which Patrice Toler won. Activities 25 2 6 2 7 imm A V Time Capsule 28 Activities Activities 29 Registration Tally registration is more affectionately remembered as those days during the year when once again we were to do things by the numbers. These special days were September 4th, November 17th, and February 7th. We rushed to school at our scheduled time only to stand in lines to find out that our first choice was filled and we must make another choice. Our frustrations grew but some how with assistance from our friends, counselors. Principals and teachers we managed to once again complete a full day schedule of classes. This is all history now, as once again we stand ready to tackle the job of registration. Planning for alternatives becomes a must during these times and we have learned through past experience that on Tally Day you are to come with a complete schedule and alternative if you are to survive. 30 Activities School days filled with those memories that each of us share and hold secret. A time when the planning and waiting in line is over and we begin each new Trimester with uplifted spirits and a freshness of expectations. Our class time is spent in the pursuit of learning and developing those skills which we have pre-determined to be of utmost importance in our future lives. It is a beginning and an ending for as each Trimester ends, a new one begins and for some of us this is a farewell for tomorrow brings us to yet another new situation beyond the halls of Edison. Activities 31 Senior Banquet The Senior Class held their banquet at Jax Cafe on February 16th. The menu consisted of a choice of Roast Top Sirloin, Baked Chicken, or Fried Jumbo Shrimp served with Soup du jour, salad, baked potato, assorted rolls and ice cream. The welcome was given by Lisa Hunzelman, followed by remarks from Mr. Grimstad, and the Invocation by Pam Stegora. The Masters of Ceremonies were Joe Joncas, and Jim Browning. The talent show following the meal consisted of songs by the Nordeast Express, Tony Preese, and Jim Anderson. Lisa Hunzelman led the group in an original composition. Dale Mel-bie played an original composition on the guitar and the 1981 Hall of Fame was also announced during the program. MOKO IH TIM iwit 32 Activities Activities 33 v A Year of Concerts . It offers regular classes in a different setting where students are encouraged to work at their own speed. There are about 30 students and the advisor is Pat Lobash. Organizations-71 ESL LEP During the school year, more and more new faces were seen at school. The reason was Edison's new LEP, Limited English Proficiency, program. The students in this program are recent immigrants from Southeast Asia. The two main ethnic groups are Vietnamese and Hmong, each with a different language. These people left their homes in Vietnam and Laos when they were threatened with war and communism. They came to refugee camps in Thailand and eventually found chances to come to the United States. Now they are adopting to a new environment and way of life which they find both enjoyable and challenging. Here at Edison, our program began with 12 students. By early February, the program had 60 students and was expected to grow. Upon arriving at Edison, LEP students first spend much of their time with Mr. Carter, learning basic things about English and getting aquainted with the school. Soon after, they are assigned to a bilingual teacher, and the ESL teacher. The ESL class, English as a Second Language, is taught by Mr. Schweppe and is all in English. The rest of their day is spent in regular classes. 72 LEP LEP 73 H.E.N. The Henry, Edison, North program is in its fifth year. The reason for this program is to give students a wider choice of classes and teachers. It encourages students and gives them the opportunity to meet new people. The H.E.N. program seems to increase every year with more students and that's all the more fun. Lay-out designers: Leann Knutson, Jeff Droll, Leslie Gervais, Sue Krai, Aimee Mirault Co-Editor: Garrett Rademacher Co-Editor: Alan Betker Managing Editor: Cathy Kyle Our staff, this year, was under the supervision of a new advisor, Mr. Michael Elavsky. Our job was to write copy, take pictures, draw layouts, and to fill the pages of our book with the fond memories of 80-81. At times we had a lot of hard work and deadlines to meet but it was all worth it. The yearbook staff would like to thank Lisa Hunzel-mann for drawing the sketches for our cover and all the Edison students for making this book possible.
