AND SEWING . . FOREWORD Because HOBBIES have become very important with the increase of our leisure time, because they are our own particular choice of enjoyment during our spare time, because they offer us an opportunity to test our Initiative and originality, because they show our line of interest and may therefore develop into our life's vocation, and because they are intermingled with our school work, the staff of the 1939 WIZARD has chosen HOBBIES as its theme. Pago 7 RUTH FITCH COLE In Memoriam She loved the pine that reaches for the sky. The frail arbutus creeping in its shade, The rocky trail that winds to shelters high. The sandy promenade the tide has made. She loved the mournful crying of the loon, The whispering of the night birds in the nest, The shadow of the heron against the moon. The sweet content of a tired child at rest. But most she loved the eagerness of youth Who bend with faith to common daily tasks; To them she gave the flaming flag of truth-Truth unadorned, honesty without a mask. Now though she's gone all Truth to know at will, The perfume of her presence lingers still. Pago 8 Vesta Seaman. i Pag© 9 WINDOWS. LIGHT. LEARNING . . . Seldom is a school fortunate enough to have two such talented men for the music department as Edison's Mr. Lunkley and Mr. Sodergren. Together they constitute two of the city's finest musical directors. Mr. Lunkley is the newcomer who has done such wonders for our Band and Orchestra. He also gives instructions to those who wish to learn the art of playing instruments. Edison is proud of the fact that he is the solo trumpet player for Dick Long's Orchestra. He has developed the Band and Orchestra into the versatile organizations they now are, equally good at both overtures and ''swing.” Mr. Sodergren's mellow voice presents an objective for the members of the singing organizations that he directs. His membership in the Apollo Club, an organization of accomplished singers, gives him an unusual distinction. He leads the choirs in all sorts of songs and they climax the year with excellent assembly programs. The success of the operetta was due to his competent handling of the Glee Club as shown in The Firefly” which soared beyond the highest expectations. Pag -pun To Hear I No Easter or Christmas holiday goes by without the Choral singing of Edison's first Choir which adds a sacred note to those occasions. To the students, scholastic life and social life share almost equal positions on the school horizon. Extra curricular activities—parties, clubs, senior banquets, class plays, vodvils, and other presentations - are all results of various interests and HOBBIES. We find these HOBBIES in school activities are closely related to those exercised outside of school. Mk, ] ] Class ol 1939 Steps CM The senior class party and banquet are two ol ibe seniors nvqhts out. Uuslc I was lumished lor the class party by Edison's lau Orchestra. The senrors r he r Sunday best danced and had a very qood lime, k lloor show was presented, at 1 intermission, and the party was climaxed by relreshmenls and happy good-hy es. The height ol laughter, hiendshlp, and toasts was reached a the senior 1 banquet. Here the graduating class gathered to enloy sumptuous, good Vood and entertainment littlng to a senior’s taste. To carry out the noye theme, cruising, the tables were gaily decorated to represent steamers proudly hearing the school I colors. Servers made a very presentable crew in their sailor caps. EDISON'S HOMECOMING After the game a supper was served in the lunch room. The victuals having been eaten, both the alumni and students celebrated Edison's victory. In the evening a bazaar was held. Edison's various clubs and the Parent and Teachers Association had refreshment booths, a country store, a German band, a picture stand, a fortune-teller, and other forms of entertainment. Later in the evening the Jazz Orchestra furnished music for dancing. Old school friends were able to get together and discuss old times. Everybody enjoyed himself, and the evening was a great success. A Christmas tree reigned supreme over a room beautifully decorated with holly sprigs and mistletoe. Santa Claus proved his prowess as a master of ceremonies to the satisfaction of all. Watching Santa Claus was almost as much fun as dancing; however, gay people dancing around a Christmas tree was a pleasing sight. Later everyone went home filled with the Christmas spirit. SANTA AND HIS HELPERS ALL-SCHOOL CHRISTMAS PARTY When one thinks of Christmas and the Christmas spirit, he naturally thinks holly. At least this is the logic foliowi by the Carl L innaeus Club. Green and red combined made Santa Claus se very near, indeed. The time and energJL expended by the members of the club in preparation of the holly, were amply rcfll warded by the hearty approval of thV student body. CARL LINNAEANS PREPARING HOLLY A festive mood reigned at the joint Christmas meeting of the French and German Clubs. The characters of the Grimm Brothers' old fairy tale. Hansel and Gretel. were assumed by German students. The season's joys were carried to the assembled group by Christmas carols characteristic of the two nations. The meeting was adjourned with a Joyeux Noel and a Froehliche Wein achten to all. FRENCH-GERMAN CHRISTMAS PARTY The Blue Triangle, a very active club. Iheld its Christmas party the week preceding Christmas vacation. The girls were well entertained, and they had ]much fun playing various games. Much hilarity was obvious when paper hats were made and worn by the girls. The IBlue Triangle has done much to promote a spirit of friendliness among the girls of Edison. 1 BLUE-TRI CELEBRATES 1 CHRISTMAS SANTA VISITS EDISON A Holy and Humble Spirit Prevails The dramatic club presented The Child of Flanders before both assemblies on the Thursday preceding Christmas vacation. The play takes place in Flanders, France, at the time of the World War. It concerns three American soldiers in Flanders at Christmas time and their dream on Christmas night. The Christmas hymns sung by the Choir behind stage, the evergreens decorating the stage, the lighting effect, and the costumes of the characters — all these created a beautiful Christmas atmosphere. This play was typical of the excellent performances given by the Footlights and Curtain Club each year. THE HOLY CHILD ] I ] ] Seniors Display Dramatic Talents Two class plays have come and gone, but they will not be forgotten. The seniors who per-lormed in Booth Tarkington's classic play, Seventeen, and in the amusing and sophisticated twentieth century comedy, Through the Keyhole, will likewise be remembered. Mr. Sander's ability to give glamour to our high school productions has long been recognized. Under his skillful direction each successive class play has been enjoyed and approved by the student body, as well as by friends and alumni. Class plays are something to look forward to by not only the seniors, but the undergraduates as well, as many previous dramas will attest. THROUGH THE KEYHOLE PRESENTED BY THE JUNE CLASS OF 1939 Paget 85 Glee Club Presents Operetta The curtains opened to reveal the beautiful settings and costumes of our school's most successful operettas. Inspiring music rang throu auditorium when a cast of more than one hundred students enacted the memorable scenes of Rudolf Frimyl's The Firefly. Under the direction of Mr. Soder-gren, practically the whole student body enjoyed thrillingly beautiful music. AS THE CURTAIN CLOSES SHIPMATES ON PARADE Student Council Talent Show The Vodvil has become an annual tradition. This year acts typical of all countries were presented, as well as dancing, comedy, and music. Both swing and classics shared equal billing on a carefully planned program. Student planned, and student directed with a student cast, it proved a great success. COON CREEK COWBOYS RICH MAN. POOR MAN MACALESTERS CHORAL READERS Edison Entertainers Students anxiously look forward to the auditorium periods which have always been pleasant breaks in the activities of the day. A variety of interests was covered in the assemblies which served to enlarge the student's capacities for enjoyment. A Negro quartet, choral readers, and G-men were all represented during the year. School spirit was kept at its highest peak of enthusiasm during the football and basketball season by pep assemblies. Entertainment and education both are featured in the assemblies. A QUARTET OF SWING AND CLASSIC U Library Exhibits Throughout the past year the library exhibits have won the growing interest and appreciation of the entire student population of the school. The fact that students have varied preferences was taken into consideration, and a wealth of material was attractively presented each week. Exhibits of interest to students were displayed by the foods, botanical, chemical, foreign language, and other departments of the school. During school hours one can find many students examining these displays. OLD FASHIONED UTENSILS SOAP MAKING In recent years, having recognized the importance of athletics, many Edison students have chosen their HOBBIES accordingly. While sports build up the physical body, HOBBIES develop mental faculties, and both stimulate the development of leadership, cooperation, and individuality. Since athletics offer a wide variety of sports, they provide an interesting and worthwhile HOBBY. L L I I 0 II I u I I I [ [ [ II II I n ii H li When a Young Man's Fancy Turns Toward Sports Speed. Action. Accuracy. Precision. Sportsmanship—these represent the aims of Edison athletes. Through excellent coaching and spirited competition Inventor teams and players accomplished these aims by winning two championships, breaking five city-conference records, and by gaining the respect and admiration of opponents and other Minneapolitans. Those teams which won championships were the 1938 baseball and football squads. The city-conference records were shattered b members of the basketball and swimming teams. The teams which neither won championships nor broke records displayed true Edison spirit and sportsmanship by the manner in which they accepted their defeats. Edisonians and Minneapolitans can be proud of Wizard athletics. The Tackling Tommies this year had an excellent season, tying with North and Central for the championship. This was the first three way tie in Minneapolis competition. North was chosen to represent the Milling Center in the Twin-City game. The Edison-Marshall and the Edison-Washburn contests were the most closely fought of the season, an extra point deciding the winner in each game. Winning five out of seven games, the Inventors were upset by South and Central. BUDNICKI BUMPS OVER EDISON SCORES Edison Edison Edison Edison Edison Edison Edison Assisted by Mr. Mcmkowski. The Edison sophomores proved to be one of the strongest sophomore squads in the city, boosting Edison's possibilities for next year. In its championship game with Marshall, Edison suffered its one and only defeat by the score of 40 to 35. The next week, however. Edison retaliated by trouncing Vocational, thus taking undisputed possession of second place. Representing Minneapolis as the second place team. Edison played in a Twin-City basketball game at the Minnesota Field House. The Tommies defeated their down-river opponent, Johnson, to keep their Twin-City record unstained. In the years that Edison has been in Twin-City basketball competition. it has yet to be beaten by a St. Paul team. Marshall won the Minneapolis championship and went on into the finals in the State Tournament.
