TO THE FORTY-NINERS For twelve years most of you Forty-niners have enrolled at Edison School. With few exceptions, you, babies of the depression, entered school in 1937. The old portable school at Edison had just burned and the federal government had helped construct the first floor of our present building. In 1940-41 the second floor was added. Now a welcomed new addition is being built. As you have progressed through school, our community and school have grown. C. £. Swingley. Principal Carolyn Mansfield Secretary BOARD OF EDUCATION William Stern Vice President Mrs. Uno T. Hill Treasurer John Davies . Secretary OUR OFFICE Emilia Dardano Secretary In spite of working with these limited building facilities and the many changes in our staff, you have survived to graduate. As you go forward I wish to commend each of you and extend to you my very best wishes for success. Daniel Kreitzman President Charles D. Lutz . . . Each class and organization in the student body has representatives. These representatives voice the opinions and ideas for the students. Concessions, cheer leaders, the Christmas tree, and the Courtesy Squad were sponsored by the Student Council this year. PATROL BOYS Olive Richardson Secretary Vivian Orban Treasurer Rosanna Neeley Student Council Mary Ann Fleming Vice President Jo Ann Lancaster President Edison has been proud to have a chapter of the National Honor Society since its organization in 1945. Students are judged by the faculty on four points: character, leadership, service, and scholarship. A “B” average must be maintained throughout high school for the student to be eligible for membership. The induction of new members is a most impressive ceremony. The honor roll of students achieving high scholastic attainments is calculated by Honor Society members. Basketball is always a favorite sport at Edison. Although the 1948-49 team was not very successful in chalking up victories, the boys never lost spirit. The team was handicapped all season by the height of the players. Some of the games were lost by very close margins. The boys played ex- ceptionally well in the Christmas and Sectional tournaments. The team was rated as one of the smallest in the Calumet area, but one of the scrappiest. In 1948 our community saw the first football game to be played at Edison. This was an event they had looked forward to for a long time. The team was inexperienced; most of them had never played football before. Coach “Bras”, a first year football coach, taught the boys everything they know about the game. Even though their record was not very commendable, their spirits were high; they never gave up until the whistle blew for the end of the game. During the season, Edison played some rough and tough teams who had had years of experience behind them. One victory, a win over Griffith, was the high spot of the season. Both experience and maturity will be in our favor when we hold that line in ‘49. We gave a bake sale, a skating party, and a couple of dances. When we put all of our dust together, prospects for a prom looked promising. We were well rewarded for our efforts. The prom held in the huge ballroom of the Marquette Pavilion was an out- standing success. We started out with well-laid plans. In seeking gold, we had fun, too, The road was rough, but we were’nt blue, Tho’ work was hard, we did not fail. We always managed to stay on the trail. The next year came and quickly passed. We stopped to dig some gold at last, But all we found was yellow dust Which did not satisfy our lust. We lost a few from our caravan For some dropped out to seek new land. But most of us stayed on to find The place where nuggets could be mined. The next year found our number less, Just fifty now, we must confess. With spirits high we staked our claim For Edison High we won great fame. The golden vict’ry at last is won, E’er the sun is set, our task is done. For now we’ve reached the end of our trail With diploma in hand; we did not fail.
