1975 EDISONIAN EDISON HIGH SCHOOL EAST GARY, INDIANA VOLUME XXXIV Parkside Avenue, East Gary, Indiana — that’s where we started our day. At 8 A.M. we checked into homeroom which foiled many ideas to ditch. In and out of 25 classrooms we paraded past the new principal and his assistant. We wondered if we could adjust to their rules and ideas. We settled into the routine as cool weather robbed us of cherished freedom. Instead of paying attention our eyes wan- dered outside the windows when the snow fell. Between classes we’d make locker stops for a chat with a friend, a quick brush of the comb, or just to unload books. Up in the girl’s balcony we carried our lunches or if the menu didn’t please us, off we went to Arman’s, Burger Chef, or even MacDonalds. Revitalized, we lasted until 2:55. If no one waylaid us in the foyer to reflect on the day’s activities, we got to our meetings or practices on time, or took a book or two and left for home. Being together 7 hours a day, 178 days a year, we got to know each other pretty well and made many lasting friendships. OPENING 2 STUFF WE DID 8A WHEN THE BELL RANG 56A FACES WE SAW 88A WITH A LOT OF HELP 136A INDEX 148 CLOSING 152 8 STUFF WE DID What didn’t we do? We were practicing in the summer’s sun prior to fall classes. Working hard we released our frustrations and energy. After the games we went to dances and parties celebrating our vic- tories and acknowledging the defeats. Homecoming brought spirit, floats, com- petition, and finally victory. We antici- pated Christmas vacation and the start of 1975, but mid-term exams weren’t so inviting. Decorating for the prom com- bined late hours, hard work and imagina- tion; the memories were worth every extra touch. Graduation brought tears, happi- ness, and the end of the year. But we Pep sessions send school spirits high 1. Student Council president, Doug Cochran is in charge of Home- coming Pep sessions. 2. Junior Class celebrates Homecoming by having a Farmers Day. 3. We had been waiting a long time and we were becoming quite impatient. It seemed as if it would never arrive and suddenly it was here and no one was ready. After all the weeks of working on our hall projects and floats we finally realized nothing was done. Homecoming ’74 had caught us unpre- pared. There were last minute things to do — about a hundred of them. But we made it. Everything went well and fell into its proper place starting with the Fighting Eagles leading at halftime 7-6. The seniors proved to be the dominant class by winning both hall project and float. Sophomores took the award for hall decoration. The honor every senior girl dreams of was announced next as Nancy Novkovic was crowned Homecoming queen for 1974. We listened, goofed off, and sometimes something would sink in. A lot of times we daydreamed, thinking of the summer past. Reality was the test we faced next hour. At the end of the day there were club meetings. Moneymaking projects or activ- ity ideas were put into action. Some- times we stayed for help on complicated courses; finally, the last bell rang. It signi- fied the end of the year. There was no chance to go back and study harder or turn in that late as signment. We hope we accomplished the goals we set in the beginning. We got to know the new administrators and teachers. We knew by their expres- sions if we could “get away with it” or not. Our friends became familiar with our moods just by looking and listening to us. There were special looks meant for only one, but understood by just about everyone. Some faces we may never see again, but, hopefully, they won’t be forgotten. Administrators move toward improvement 1. We waited three years for it to arrive and then all too quickly it was gone leaving us with only 133 out of our original 183. We worried about careers, money, our lives-everything. We may remember a dance, a close basketball game, or an unforgetable romance. Our talent in designing winning hall projects for home- coming would never be surpassed. For the third consecutive year we won hall projects, and to top it off we won best float our senior year. Until the last moment there was inde- cision about post prom. With only 71 dollars to spend all year long, we debated even having a post prom. As one, of the smallest recent graduating classes at EHS, we knew they would remember us for one reason or another, the senior class of 1975. I TELEPHONE 85 ; 1. We were upperclassmen. All the worries we faced as underclassmen were gone. We got our class rings in October and wore them with pride to symbolize our new status. Spirit wasn’t lack- ing with us. For homecoming we dressed up as farmers to support our float, a huge piggy bank with a silver coin. Pep sessions were always exciting because of competition among classes. The first spirit trophy of the year was awarded to us. Whoever made up the slogan SPIRIT OF 76 must have been thinking of us. Making plans for the prom was a major problem. We sold candy, and finally, after all the worry, every- thing turned out fine. As the year came to a close, we knew that we would be returning as seniors for our final year at E. H. S. Our class really had spirit; we won our first spirit trophy, and received first place for hall decoration during spirit week. What really made us cheer was having sophomore guys on the varsity football team. When basketball began, quite a few sophomores ended up on the J.V. team. Winter dragged on and finally it was spring and that day had come to order our rings. Now another wait. The day will come soon enough when we will be wearing our class rings and having to plan our futures. 1. Sophomore class officers: M. Mullarky. V. Pres.; K. project are J. Burton. J. Grebenick. R. The first few weeks were exciting and new, but soon became routine. Our freshman BOYS suddenly turn- ed to nothing as the upperclassMEN crossed our paths. We had many new responsibili- ties to face as Homecoming changed from make believe to reality. Soon after football basketball began. We didn’t have great turn- outs at the games, but we enjoyed every minute. Christmas vacation gave us time to catch our breath before 1975 began. We gradually learned names to go along with faces and what was expected of us from the teachers. By the end of the year all the events meshed into memories. “Frosh”, as we were called all year, would no longer be our title. We had survived that first year at E.H.S. and were looking forward to next year when we would be the experienced all- knowing sophomores. 25. Brian Kingery works in wood shop. 26 . Every- one in a community has to work together. The families, small businesses and cor- porations help support the schools to pro- mote their businesses and help to finance our yearbook. Our patronization keeps them alive. We would meet at local res- taurants after games and dances “just for a coke”, or visit a local store for a few things that we absolutely needed. Their ads helped make this yearbook possible.
