Through the fall tennis and winter skiing seasons when the old girls are brushing up on their techniques, and the new girls are trying their Wings, Mr. and Mrs. Wlallace can be seen standing on the side lines giving cheerful and enthusiastic advice. In the time we have been privileged to know them. these two understanding people have captured our hearts. They will always remain dear in our memories. A Dear Lord, as now I face the world, I'm thinkin' hard of you. And thought's come to my head Of things that I should do. I shouldn't get so gosh-darned mad At people that are weak. I shouldn't find it awful sad To see 'em all so meek. I know that I should grin and say When people vex me so, Don't worry! There's another day That won't seem half as low. I always say the first remark That comes into my mind. But most folks, Lord, don't like that spark Of truth I think is kind. ' So help me, Lord, and see me through And bless me with Thy grace, So I can make this world by You A fuller, better place. PATRICIA PAGE 14 wg nw fm ffm' , O r -+1 ,N W M ww 'M' . my -- f-. 5 . I 2 1 t , - Q s ut, E.. T -' The Edgewood Girl of '48 The battleship lNlissouri's illustrious ca- reer has penetrated and become a vital part of each one of our lives. YVe were born in a depression: we are graduating into a con- fused battle-scarred world. As a result, our viewpoints are more liberalg we have professed our independenceg yet a glance into the senior smoker proves that we've maintained our youthful idealism. Stan's Dutch is the center of a noisy group of bridge enthusiasts, argyle knitters, and apple munchers. The juke box im- presses us with the strains of Civilization, while we overpatronize Nabisco's delicacies, Texas Fritos, ice cream sandwiches and gal- lons of orange juice. The nine-fifty P. M. Happy Hour hnds us stampeding toward the food counter clad in a vivid variety of night creations, dull blue jeans, swing-back rain coats and, of course, our hair is twisted into cotton socks. In typical feminine contrast, the six o'clock dinner bell draws us down the marble staircase in the new look, short sleek hair creations, tiny waists, twelve-inch ballerina skirts, with taffeta petty coats peeking, and sheer black stockings. Have our fundamental interests really changed? No, we're still subscribing to is- sues of Vogue, Cue and Life Magazines. Our weekends in New York still take shape under the clock at the Biltmore, only to move on to foreign restaurants and then to Greenwich Village. Uncle Sam's gray clad Boy Scouts beam over the wall eagerly awaiting the weekly Edgewood taxi. Of course, Princeton, Yale and Dartmouth weekends are still holding their own on our social schedule of events. Now for a look to a former decade! The Edgewood Girl of '38 Not that we wish to revive the cliche, those were the good old days, but this era's typical Edgewoodite is less burdened wtih worldly wisdom, more concerned with the affairs of her innnediate surroundings, and worrying about overcrowded stag lines, rather than a successful United Nations. As to her feminine characteristics, they dif- fer only materially from ours today. Let's take a bus ride to White Plains and meet our '38 sister at Schralft's after a ses- sion with -Ieanette McDonald and Nelson Eddy in Maytime. Sha-'s wearing a mid calf tweed skirt, a cashmere sweater held neatly in place by a tiny leather belt. Around her neck she wears a scarf pulled through a highly polished fraternity ring. To give her the sophisticated extra height, her shoes are blessed with three-inch heels, while only the lightest shades of real silk stockings grace her long legs. On the way back to Edgewood Park she is humming Cole Porter melodies, arguing about conga techniques and almost demon- strating The Big Apple in the bus. In- scribing her latest slogans aml signatures on her trenchcoats also concerns her, as well as who will smudge her ugly clean saddle shoes Hrst. lVe meet her again in study hall, sneak- ing in a bread and butter note on pastel shade, delicately initialed note paperg of course, her ink blends harmoniously. In the tea room, she too takes advantage of smoking hours, in between crunching potato chips, sipping lemon cokes, and chewing Hershey kisses. Her book shelves are lined, not with pocket book editions, but with hve-year diaries, popular song sheets, and the latest issues of paper pulp literature. The walls of her room are plastered with Harvard and Penn State banners while chintz drapes and matching bed spreads give the four walls the Hnished touch. Yet, after all, who are we, only a gram- mar school crowd in '38, to judge and ac- curately describe our senior sisters? Their offspring are now well on the way to a fixture career as the '58 students of Edge- wood Park. ll4 Class Wi I Mfe, the graduating class of 1948, do be- queath our confusions, our frankness, and our good intentions to those who will fol- low in our steps.
