M D. Bolotsky, I. Stra Peluffo. Led by coach joseph Cipriano, the l.V. Soccer team finished a respectable 1977 season with a 5-5-3 record. After three early wins, prospects for a winning season were excellent. However, a loss to a tough Blind Brook team disheartened many Edgemont players. The loss marked a turning point after which the team slid into a six game winless period. Though frustrated by three ties, the team picked up two additional wins for an even .500 record. The l.V. squad was severely impaired by the loss of many key players to the Varsity team. However, strong performances by Adam Gluckman, replacing Glen Gypson at halfback, and David Chao, filling in for star goalie, lon Libman, proved sufficient to compensate for those losses. Other important figures on the soccer field included Alan Crystal, whose two penalty shots lifted the team to a crucial victoryg Steven Post, whose hustle provided the backbone to the team's defense, and Peter Glass, whose consistent, aggressive play at inner set up many scores. In addition, Tony Griffen, armed with a deadly outside shot, and Mike Wachs, dribbling with excellent ball control, provided another offensive combination. 147 Y i ck, D ck, S Bloom. Senior, Co-Captain lim Nelson sparked the team on offense with his consistent play and accurate chips. Harry Langer, a determined hustler, rounded out the scoring punch. A Senior, Harry, too, was Co-Captain. The defense was led by Sweeper back Taka Suzuki. Underclassmen Louis Althoff, jamie Kornbluh, I.P. Rosali, and Will Stern did an excellent job, keeping the opposing teams from the nets. Leading this fine corps, were Seniors lr. Bastos and Damir Perusko. The Panther goalie position was shared early in the season by Senior lim Hayter and Sophomore john Libman. By the schedule's close, Hayter had won full time rights and excelled in the sectionals. Shapiro N Keating L Martello M Abler Coach Hildebrandt tiff- of gf yi 4 7-qs J' S3-.Si- The 1977 Volleyball Team, coached by Ms. Gail Hildebrandt, ended their season with a 9-9 record overall and a 6-6 record in the league. The girls used a 6-2 system which seemed to be successful for them. The most valuable player was senior captain Yumi Shibuy who won all-league standing for the third year. Yumi an excellent setter, spiker, and server will be missed next year. The strongest, most consistent player throughout the season was Yukari Okumura who received the coach's award. Yukari played a fine backcourt. Linda Martello and Nanette Keating added height and spiking to the team. Other fine players included Lisa Levine, jenny Fang, jennifer Osborne, who also provided great team spirit, Maddie Ablerg Ann Fichter, Dana Flynn, and Leslie Touger, the youngest member. The team managers, Luana Shapiro and Nancy Eschenbrenner, were great assets to the team. Losing only three players to graduation, next year's team should be quite strong. The 1.V. and Freshman teams are good building blocks and Coach Hildebrandt predicts an excellent season for the fall of 1978. 148
