Freshman Football In the fall of 1977, Edgemont completed its second year of Freshman Football action. The squad, composed of just eigh- teen eighth and ninth graders, was plagued by injuries and in- sufficient numbers all season. ln fact, during the six game schedule, one game was forfeited due to a lack of healthy players. The season was highlighted by a victory in the final game with Valhalla. ln that match, the Panthers emerged with a 6-0 victory. Edgemont recorded its sole touchdown when linebacker Stacy Saren picked up a fumble and returned it for the score. The team, under the direction of coaches Larry Karabaic and Pete Rohan, was led by quarterback lon Flower. The backfield was composed of Stacy Saren and the leading rusher, halfback Greg Mann. Sam Aronson sparked the defense with two touchdowns. The line, a small but quick group, was led by Ed Tatlian. The other athletes who played were Doug Baumgarten, Andy Creel, Andy Crowder, Stephan Custer, Mike Davidoff, Alex Glickman, Gary Keating, Gabe Kolumbis, Chris Lavoie, Robert Liesman, Ray Pozzoboni, jon Spitz, and Mike Tracey. The 1977 Varsity Football team ended the season with a 3-6 record. However, this slate was not worthy of the great effort put out all year long for coaches Dale Abeling and Pete Kull. The hard hitting Panthers lost a number of heartbreakers and still earned the respects of many of their opponents. After an opening day loss to visiting Irvington on Blue and White Day, the Pan- thers evened their record with a commanding win over Haldane, 28-7. The follow- ing game, against the Yellow jackets of Hastings, was typical of the entire season. Edgemont fell behind early in the match. Then, they came back from a 13-0 deficit with long runs by backs john Long and Tom Valentine. This was not enough, however, as Hastings prevailed 20-14. Quarterback Todd Cosgrove led the squad to an 18-6 victory over Tuckahoe as he ran for one touchdown and passed to Pete Forrest for asecond. In that win Phil Bellissimo and Glenn MacGillivray excelled on the line. After a loss to Dobbs Ferry, the Panthers played a tense see-saw battle with Bronxville. Despite a 40 yard scoring aerial from Todd Cosgrove to brother P.j. and a 76 yard touchdown scamper by Tom Valentine, Edgemont lost in the closing seconds by a 27-21 score. In their sole contest with Alexander Hamilton, the Panthers scored a large vic- tory. Led by Long's 100 yard game and the defense of jeff Bertone, Scott Stemer, and Todd Spoor, Edgemont played an excellent game. Co-Captains Todd Cosgrove and john Long were voted M.V.P.'s by their team- mates. All League Honorable Mention status went to Phil Bellissimo, Mike Hudes, and Tom Valentine. Todd Cosgrove, john Long, and Pete Forrest were selected for the All League team. 143

Boys' Cross Country CROSS COUNTRY Row 1: L. Schon, S. Friedman, R. Alterman. Row 2: B. Florio, N, Hart. Missing: T. Kornbluh, D. Winograd, E. Burrows. Coming off two consecutive seasons as League Cham- pions, the 1977 Cross Country team concluded its schedule with a mediocre record of 3-3. Edgemont lost its top three runners on last year's squad and thus had a rather inexperienced team. Coach E. I. Ross's most consistent runner all season long was Senior Bob Florio. An All League Honorable Selec- tion, Bob never finished less than second place in dual meets. Captain Rich Alterman was the supporting factor on the squad. At the Sports Award Dinner, he was awarded the fifth annual Harrier Award. Other consistent performers on the team were Seniors Steve Friedman, Tom Kornbluh, and Lew Schon.
