Board Of Education
The Eden Central School Board has endeavored to fulfill its obligations faithfully and conscientiously.
The Eden Central building will be completed and ready for occupation by September 1940. Much of the
credit for bringing this project to its final satisfactory consummation must be given to Mr. H. J. McCauley,
president of the board. His broad business experience and excellent judgment have been of incalculable
value in overcoming many of the problems coincident with an enterprise of this character.
The school board is cognizant and appreciative of the true significance of popular education to fit
our youth to meet the many problems of our democratic government. Many facilities for social and educa-
tional activities will be available to adults also.
The school board is fully aware of its responsibilities for both the adequacy and the cost of operating
the Eden Central School, and will make every effort to use its best judgment in the selection of competent
executives who can be entrusted with the actual management of all school activities.,
We have every reason to believe that our school board will successfully complete the task it has under-
taken with credit to itself and to the future welfare and prosperity of Eden.

As our Junior year draws to its elose. we are able to look hack with fond memories to the pleasant
events which have taken place throughout this time.
Our class has taken part in numerous events-both social and aeadelnie. Six out of eight of the Fast
of "Neighbors", one of the one-aet plays given in January. were members of the junior Class. Those who
took parts were: lidith Uriffen. Lyla June liiee. janet Xlonell. Norma lliee. Xgnes ,lean ,-Xllanson. and
lionald Shaw. ,loe Yaeanti had an important role in "The Valiant."
Hur greatest sneeess ol' the year w as our y ietory in the l"ield Nleet. VS e are yery proud of the faet that
we won lirst plaee hoth in our yell and the meet itself. and it is one ol' our highest aims to he vietorious
again next year.
Vs e hay e had numerous "money making" enterprises, including a halted goods sale in whieh we were
unusnally sueeessl'nl. Xt our 'l'hanltsgiving danee. we all seemed to have a grand time daneing to the strains
of Kudara and his liddle. Une evening in lfehrnary we had a junior soeial in the sehool at which we played
giilllve, tlullved. and ended up hy grand "1-atsn. llowever. the outstanding event ol' the year was our Junior

In September. N159 a class of almost fifty Soplioinores assembled. with Nlr. lludspitli as our able
faculty adyisor. ll e seemed to be a promising class. as the events of the year liaye proved.
Un Friday. tlie llllI'H't'Illll of Uctober. the date ol' our annual l"ield Nleet. me lost lirst place by' a half
point. NH- concluded that it was the date, of course.
Tlirougli tlie mud and water ol' early' fall. we triunipllantly paraded vsitli otliers to the grounds ol' the
new school for the corner-stone laying.
A little later, clad in maroon and ysliite, five basketball players, lin- elieer-leaders. and two sports-
band players lall from our elassj performed for the benefit ol' the spectators and the success of the season.
We are proud. too. tliat four of our girls are in the triple trio. and that when tlie llratnaties Club presented
its plays. tliree Sophornores were cast. one taking a leading role.
Because each class has to put on an assembly program and because our linglisli classes were studying
a unit on radio, ssc transfornied the stage into the studio and gaye tyso successful radio dramas, adapted

The Freshmen are the largest high school class in the school. We mention this hecause in the seventh
grade we numbered less than half the 60 pupils in the class today.
We are proud to have been the last eighth grade to graduate from Eden lligh Sehoolg the last to
graduate with lllr. Myersg in fact, the last to graduate! There will be no more elementary school promotion
exercises in lfden Central Sehool.
Our class is well represented in the various extra-curricular activities. John Vaeanti is on the first
hasltcthall team. Richard Szal, Richard Boseek, Stephen Sears and Nlarion Vanxote also participated in
some exciting games on the ,layvee basketball team. Few Freshmen have achieved this position in the past.
Fin' students, all from Mr. 0'Ncil,s class, are "Future Farmers of Alnerican. Miss Straub's students have
joined such organizations as Dramatics Club, and News Staff.
Xl c look forward to being Sophomores in the new lfden Central School huilding.

Never before in lQdeu's history have there been two eighth grades. Now, because of the centralization
school, we need two home rooms.
We were amazed, since we are only junior high school people, that in the field meet we won third
place in the contest and made almost 314.00 selling tags.
As our assembly program this year, we sponsored a speaker from Buffalo State Teachers College,
Doctor Peterson, who spoke to us on "America's Relationship with South Americaf, Dr. Peterson gave us
interesting information about the products of manufacturing and gave us a very good discription of South
American affairs.
We were very industrious in cooperating in Miss Buflingtonis contract plans in studying history.
To achieve an A required work, and work we did.
ln Home Economics, our apron-clad cooks made their Hrst baking powder biscuits and muffins.
Some went into our waiting stomachs and some into the waste basket. Well, itis all in life and to the disap-
pointed girls we say, "Live and Learn!
We have elected a jury of six people, three boys and threegirls, two monitors, a boy and a girl, and
the hi h and mighty judge. This of course will keep us remembering our manners. This we think will make
us reaize that we aren't Sixth Grade students but Eighth Grade students by whom an example for others
is set.

This year thc seventh grade is not only the largcst grade in thc school. but it is the largest grade,
from first to senior. cvcr known in our school. It is so large that this ycar for the first timc it is divided into
two scparatc classes. scvcn :X and scvcn li. ncithcr of which is superior to the other. Nliss Kuntz has the seven

Thc combincd scvcnth gradc, with a uniquc chccr and a spiritcd group, carried off many honors in
thc animal l"icld Nlcct that was hcld carly in ilu- fall, thcrcby making a namc for thcir grade right from the
bcginning. Perhaps much of tht- crcdit is duc to thc superior lcadcrship in cha-4-rs offcrcd by Shirlcy Yan Note

lloth 1-lasscs put on top-rating assembly programs. The Seven 'X gave us an excellent melodrama.
The mclodrama was lvcpt a sccrct so that no one knew how they wcrc to be cntcrtaincd until just before it
be-gan. lt was really something different, and very humorous. The Seven B had a vcry amusing boxing tourna-
ment which brought cheers from the entire assembly. All of the boxers had humorous names, such as 1940
for James Forti, Stripped Gears for Edward Gier, and Baby Krebs for Clair Krebs.

President of Student Government
tudent Government
"Student Government of Eden Central School is organized for the purpose of giving the students an
opportunity to express in a democratic way their needs and their opinions concerning matters pertaining to the
student body. Through this democratic body we solve problems by student practice. By this participation we
hope to achieve a better way of mutually meeting needs and advancing understanding among the students and
between faculty and the studentsf, This passage, selected from the Constitution of the Student Government,
expresses the general purpose and aim of this newly organized group.
The legislative body of the Student Government is known as the Student Assembly. Each home room
from the Seventh Grade up has two representatives, a boy and a girl. one to act as president in class activities
and the other to act as secretary and treasurer. These same students represent their class in the Student As-
sembly. This body acts upon any question pertaining to the student body whenever such matters are presented
by any representative.
From this same group, early in the school year, a nominating committee is selected to prepare a slate of
candidates for the school officers. Any student in good standing is eligible to hold these offices, and the can-
didates are selected by opular vote of the student body. Our aim is to provide for a maximum of student par-
ticipation and student irection any activities that may be referred to them.
From the foundation that we have laid this year we hope a sound and effective organization will develop.

The Eden Embers Staff
It was unanimously approved by the Seniors that the memorable
events and activities of this great year should be preserved in a permanent
record, a record which will serve to keep alive memories of our Senior year.
Thus, meeting the challenge of producing a yearbook worthy of represent-
ing our school, the Embers stall was chosen. The editors were elected from
the Senior class. The assistants were chosen by the editors themselves, as
the students most likely to cooperate and willing to work hard. The staff
received valuable aid from the various members of the faculty.
The editorial staff consisted of:

all Patrol and Bus Captains
The llall Patrol was ereated by the student government in response to the need of relief of hall conges-
tion. The Student Council appointed a commissioner from the Student Council, lfdward Reinhard, to study the
situation and to suggest measures that would relieve it. After eareful Consideration, patrol members were
Chosen including two eapable lieutenants, Lester Rupp and Allison Arlen. They were diseriminately placed
at the foot of stairways and at other places of undue Congestion. Thus the hall patrol, undertaken as one of the
first aets of the student government, has worked smoothly all semester.
The bus Captains and their assistants were chosen as the patrol members had been. They also were
appointed for purposes of safety and eonvenienee. Their duties are to cheek attendance, to keep order, and to
help small ehildren in and out ofthe buses.
These two organizations are both new, but they have run eflieiently and have beeome an important part
of the sehool system. With very few exeeptions, Cooperation within the student body has been cheerfully
extended.

Eden Central Competitive Chorus
Saturday morning, April 27, about sixty sehool ehildren lroarded the new lfden Central Sehool buses to
go to Canandaigua. Among them were the forty members of the eompetitive ehorus whose thoughts went back
to the happenings of the past year.
They looked hack first to the day when they is ere chosen from the large ehorus the best ehoral singers.
There followed many enjoy alrle rehearsals.
The eompetitive ehorus had helped to make the Spring tioneert on Nlareh 5 a great sueeess. lts selections
were "Praise the Kaine of the Lord" by Norden. required numher at the inusie eoutests, and "Beautiful Dream-
er" by Foster.
The eompetitive ehorus has as its ohjeetixe the formation of a workable sized group to partieipate in
the eontest at Fredonia. Hut of this ehorus another group of nine pupils was seleeted to form the well-known
Triple Trio. This organization has heeome one ol' the most popular groups in the sehool. These students also
made a speetaeular showing at the Spring tloneert.
The thoughts ol, the students on the lruses now turned to the great day ofthe 'llusie Festival at Fredonia.
At this eontest, the ehorus reeeived a rating of 2- and therefore heeame eligihle to enter the State Contest
at Canandai rua.
Twelwil- hours later, tired but happy, the ehoral singers returned home. Although not victorious, they
felt that good work had been accomplished.

It is the function of the High School Chorus to offer to any student who wishes it the opportunity to
sing four-part choral work. Such participation enlarges the musical background and the appreciation of those
who take part. liden Central School now has two choruses, the High School Chorus and the Competitive Chorus.
The large chorus composed of about ninety members made its first appearance at the Christmas Pageant,
"The Holy Grail", which was sponsored by the Dramatics Club. In spite of the crowded arrangement, the chorus
performed in its very best style and the public was overwhelmed.
After the successful Pageant, the chorus made a spectacular showing at the Spring Concert. The public
was amazed at the large body of students who participated. Two numbers which received the great approval
of the audience were "Ave Yerumv by Mozart, which was sung all in Latin, and "Deep River", arranged by
O,Hare.
Of the large chorus, seventy members, excluding the Seniors, gave a splendid performance at the Bac-
calaureate Service, ,Iune 23, 1940.

Little did the members realize when the band made its first appearance in October at the Cornerstone
Laying, that the season would be so eventful.
At the beginning of the year when the call came for band, about forty-four pupils came to the music
room to participate. The band members, from the very beginning found their band periods enjoyable and
profitable. As is the usual custom, marches were played at first, but later overtures and novelty numbers were
rehearsed.
In December the sports band began its activities. This selected group of fifteen entertained the public
at the basketball games.
The next great event which took place was the band concert, given April 12. At this performance the
band made a splendid appearance. Two numbers which were very much liked by the audience were "The
Three Gracesw by O'Neill and "The Traveller Overture" by Buchtel.
At the Fredonia Festival the band players hoped that their laying would so arouse the attention of the
judges that their rating would be the highest. Their hopes were fulfilled and their next expedition was the excit-
ing trip to Canandaigua. Although not victorious, the band will have the pleasure of knowing that they did a
wonderful piece of work.
As in preceding years, the band made another successful showing Memorial Day. Marching over the
road to the cemetery, some members were full of sadness, because this was their last opportunity to play in the
Eden Central Band. Others, though it meant the last time they would play this year, looked forward to another
happy season.

the splendid appearance the orchestra made.

Varsit Soccer
Y
We can hardly tell how successful our soccer season would have been, because we did not play any
scheduled games. This situation was the result of the epidemic of infantile paralysis in Erie County. There
were no cases in our school, but the fear that we might contract it caused the cancellation of the schedule.
However, we practiced regularly and our prospects of victory were very bright, as we had a veteran team.
Four of our best men were P. Gfs. They helped a great deal in instilling spirit and in steadying the
newer members. They were Shouldice, our prize center, Knoll, a very good lincmang Smith, our goalie for
two scasonsg and Arlen, veteran center half-back and captain of this yearis team. Three of the other older
players will be lost through graduation. They are Reinhard and Laing, full-backs for two seasons and Rupp,
varsity wing since '37.
This season offered an excellent chance for the newer men to gain the confidence and experience which
will put our team on top next year. The team was coached by Mr. Frank Bugar, Physical Education Director,
and was managed by George Kraft, class of ,40.
The following men will receive varsity letters: A. Arlen, Captain, ll. Knollg IC. Rienhardg D. Laingg

Junior Varsity Basketball Team
Playing for their second year under their nickname "Jayvees',, the
Junior Varsity Basketball team completed a very interesting season.
Under the careful supervision of coach Bugar the team won nine of their
fourteen games. The team met very good competition and we think that
they did very well to win those nine games.
Many of the people who attended most of the games said that they
thought the Jayvve games were almost as interesting as the varsity games.
At many a final whistle, the close score indicated a most exciting game.
Although the ,layvee Team of 1939-40 had its off days like every other
team, as a whole it played very good basketball and should form a good
foundation for the varsity next year.
Varsity Baseball
Baseball season and fair weather are synonomous in the baseball fans' language.
Signs of both are many, and very much alike. Everyone-the youngest were the second
graders-began playing the famous American game as soon as the spring rains had cleared
away.
The school yard and the playground were the scenes of many a noon-hour practice.
It was a familiar sight, too, to see the boys in their baseball suits, itching to get away during
that last period before they were dismissed for a big game.
Our team was a member of a three-some conference with North Collins and Angola.
We won one of our four conference games, with lid Reinhard pitching and Vic Bley catching.
Roy Pry or and Gerald Van Note also were pitchers during the season. Ed Reinhard, George
Bartoo, Allie Arlen and Roy Pryor were the team's veterans, having played for a year or
IIIOTC.
This year's team was coached by Mr. Bugar and managed by Harry Knoll with the
assistance of Mr. Anderson and Lester Rupp. The following players received varsity letters:
Roy Pryor, Edward Reinhard, Gerald Van Note, Victor Bley, Joseph Vacanti, Leo Varian,
James Schmidt, Allison Arlen, John Vacanti, Richard Szal, George Bartoo, Louis Schue
and Ted Fronzak.

Future Farmers of America
This is the second year that the organization of the Future Farmers of America has been active in
Eden Central School.
The Future Farmers Club has been successfully lead this year by our president, Aloysius Filipiak,
who has represented us in many important meetings with other county chapters.
During the course of each year the club performs many activities. These are the organization of
basketball and softball teams to play with our Future Farmers chapters and 4-ll clubs in the surrounding
vicinity. the presentation of assembly programs, the cooperation with other school clubs such as making
the settings for dramatic club play
This year in December we had a Father and Son banquet for the members of our organization and
their, fathers. This provided a splendid opportunity for these men to become acquainted and exchange
helpful ideas.
The organization entered exhibits and participated in judging contests at the
'fffxtaaafaxga-XD slate ami coun.j. fairs. .Nt the llamburg Fai-r. the total amount taken in by our club
-Z, "nfs for winning judging contests and for having the best exhibits totaled Sllll. The
' boys also journeyed to NX endy. returning with many blue ribbons.
elf" 'W T The club has been very fortunate this year in having among its members,
FJ' F SY Xllison Xrlcn. the winner of the l-:X award given by the American A-Ngriculturest
Q F 9 to the outstanding 1-ll club boy for the year. Allie was the first president of our
A El organization and we as a club congratulate him.

Dramatics Club
W'hen the curtain went up on the Dramatics Club this fall, we looked in upon not only new activities
but also a new director. Miss Isabelle Nlcllivitt was with us for the first time to create new ideas and give
us new outlooks in the dramatic field.
The first glimpse that the public had of the real talent that was concealed in this year's student body
was on December 18, 1939,when the Dramatics Club presented "The Christmas Pageant of The lloly Grail"
by Bowie.
ln only a few months scripts were seen lying on desks and people were walking to and fro mumbling
short passages under their breath. Soon it was announced that they were rehearsing for three one-act plays
to be given on February 17, 1940.
When the ushers handed the programs to the audience on February 17, the following lays were an-
nounced: "Cloud llurstl' by Weaver, "Neighbors" by Zona Cale, and "The Valiant" by llail and Middle-
mass. When the orchestra had played the opening number the curtain opened, and we found "Cloudburst',
was the tragedy of a woman whose life was warped by revengeful thinking. "Neighbors" was a sprightly
comedy with lively dialogue which amused the audience from curtain rise to curtain fall. Then last, but not
least, came "The Valiant," a gripping tragedy which was so emotional that it kept the audience tense
throughout the entire performance.
Thus the curtain falls on a successful dramatic year and we are looking forward to a better and fuller
year to come with our new stage and equipment.

History Of Centralization
April, 1935 Three meetings were held by interested rural
trustees of the towns of Eden and Evans to discuss school
centralization laws and the feasability of adapting them
to a new school for the town of Eden. M r. E. D. Ormsby,
district superintendent of schools, was invited to at-
tend the last of these meetings. lt was decided that
the project be dropped at this time as it was thought
that there would not be enough public interest.
May-June, 1936 At a second group of meetings the rural
trustees of the towns of Eden and Evans again discussed
the centralization project. Petitions signed by rural
trustees and interested taxpayers to obtain recognition by
the State Education Department were mailed to Mr.
D. Ormsby. The Education department would not
acknowledge the movement at this time because of the
lack of general interest.
Nlay, 1937 At several meetings of trustees, members ofthe
Board of Education, and interested taxpayers of the town
of Eden, centralization and the possibility of obtaining
a Federal grant were discussed.
June, 1937 A Federal grant of 8135.000 was obtained by
the Board of Education, Lnion Free School District
No. 4, Eden, Dew York.
July, 1937 First petitions were signed by the legal voters
in the school districts concerned, but not enough interest
could be obtained at this time. The fall and winter
months were spent in organizing a worker group move-
ment to begin operation the following spring.
June-July, 1938 A Federal grant of S249,000 was ob-
tained. Final petitions of the legal voters were delivered
to and recognized by the State Department of Education.
Eden Central District No. 1 was laid out by the Coul-
missioner of Education.
August 17, 1938 Superintendent of Schools, Mr. E. D.
Orrnsby, made his plea for centralization by a letter to
the legal voters.
September, 1938 The worker groups endeavored to ob-
tain support for the establishment of a central school
district.
October 1, 1938 It was voted to establish a central school
district--Central School District Number 1, Towns of
Eden, Evans, Boston, and North Collins, Erie County.
The Board of Education was elected.
October 14, 1938 It was voted to bond the district for
the additional funds necessary to build the new Central
School. The Shouldice property was selected by vote as
the site for the new school.
Fall-Winter, 1938 Board of Education discussed and
selected plans for tl1e new school building.
April, 1938 Ground was broken for the foundation.
October 8, 1939 The cornerstone-laying ceremony took
pace.
June, 1940 Completion of the building, dedication of the
building, and graduation culminated the project.

DISTRICT NUMBER 4
School District Number 4 began its activities in 1814, in a log
building located on the site of the present Post Office of Eden Center.
It was some years later when an Academy was established and
operated for quite a number of years. The building was finally sold
and moved to a place west of the railroad station. The present
Baptist Church now occupies the same site.
In 1822 a new one-story school was built where the Eden 11igh
School now stands. In 1822 it was replaced by a new two-story
building. Later additions were made necessary by an ever-increasing
population, and in 1928 a combination auditorium and gymnasium
were added.
The first principal engaged by the Eden School was Allen White.

Eden Volunteer F 1re Company
The Fden Volunteer Fire Company was organized in July 1923 This organization, consisting
of Departments 1 and 2, located at I den and Last Eden, respectnvelv, furnish fire protection to the
entire township, they operate independently of each other but cooperate to the fullest in their
service to the community
The equipment at the time of the organization was two pieces of motor chemical apparatus
Today, there are three pieces of motor apparatus, each equipped with a pump, a large capacity
water tank, and hose body
In 1923 the departments became members of the Southwestern Volunteer Fireman s Asso
ciatlon CS V F A In 1924 Eden held a Joint Fire Department Inspection and Carnival,
something at that time unheard of, now verv common practice throughout the state Much time
and effort were spent in training the members in fire fighting, drilling, and first aid, and as a result,
the 1' den Volunteer Fire Company has been recognized as one of the finest
The appearance of the Eden Volunteer Fire Company caused much comment at the conven
tion of the S V F A ln 1924 Their orderly arrangement and well formed lines, together with evl
dence of bemg well drilled promised much competition to the veteran organizations who had
attended for years The efforts of the officers continued and the loyalty and faithfulness to duty of
the entire organization promised reward
In the year 1928 at the convention in Cowanda, this organization was awarded first prize
for the most men in line of march In 1930, they were outfitted with new uniforms purple trousers
cream colored shirts caps and white gloves This striking outfit combined with the background
of drilling and the spirit within the organization, was out ahead For three consecutive years, they
were awarded first prize for best appearance, in Bolivar, 1930 Lancaster, 1931, and Salamanca,
1932 In 1933 at Jamestown, they were awarded the prize for second best appearance, then afram,
first prize in 1934 and 1933 was awarded them at WE-llsville and bowanda, respectively At the Erie
1935 and 1936 and again in 1939 first prize was captured by Fden I den firemen in their cream
colored shirts and purple trousers were again awarded the honors Fspeually well drilled, tlns com
pany was accorded hearty applause all along the line of march In addition, many prizes have been
awarded to Eden at Inspections of neighboring towns
Much of the credit for this record was due to the old Eden Band and to the present I den
Volunteer Fireman s Auxiliary Band Both organizations have cooperated in a most wonderful man
ner, the latter being, really a part of the Fire Companv
The First Aid Team, sponsored by the organization, has been awarded prlzes in three competi
tive demonstrations
At times, the membership has been above 130 men, at present, the total membership 15 80
all absolutely voluntary
For years, the Fire Prevention efforts have helped to reduce the fire losses, carefulness bemg
the most effective control of the demon fire, thereby making Eden a better place in which to llve
Since 1930 the Annual Community Christmas Services, sponsored by the Volunteer Fire
Departments haye done more to bring about a united Eden than any thing else The cooperation of
ali the churches within the town, together with the interest shown bv residents of Eden in that one
event each year when all of 1' den residents can Join together and take part in a program sacred to
all, spells success This is an evening in which the children are given equal prominence with adults
There have been several most efficient officers in both departments, who haye made the fire
departments what they are today The chief of each department has held office continuously from
the tnne of its origin The officers have, at all times, looked to the future, to build soundly so that
their results would make for a more healthy and efficient organization that would weather the storms
of time The loyal support of the members to these ideals and the untlring efforts in making this
organization so outstanding is worthv of the support and loyalty of all of the residents of Eden
