Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1988 volume:

The one aspect that makes this school Unique is the different personal- ities combined into the great fun during the high school years. Because kids come from many different areas to go to school here and to be with friends, we believe this makes our school special. Our school is set in the heart of Michigan farm- land, we are surrounded by orchards, woodland groves, and rolling mead- ows. Our school setting and our students make this environment a very interesting place to be. The dainty dandelion. E.C. is Unique. 2 This is Beaver Territory! A natural look at nature. BEAVER TERRITORY  9 Hey dude. The Three “Senior” Stooges. Senior Michael Pratl caught in the act. Junior John Pyatt showing off, as usual. 4 E Junior Matt Disterheft cleans it Sophomore Chris Prillwitz and junior Kyleen Moore find a new ud. friend. Rock-n-Roll Sophomores: On your mark. Get set. Go! 5 It’s hard to believe that once lowly 8th graders of long ago, could actually be Seniors! The time has passed slowly for some and quickly for others. But, what a time we had getting here. We have watched each other get through Algebra, Chemistry, Sawatzki’s U.S. History class, and many breakups, and fallouts. But after all of these things, we are definitely the better because of them. The things that we have learned here will never leave our minds. We should cherish the memories, and learn from the hardships. For this is the birth- place of our adulthood. The tender children that we once were, will always live inside of us through our memories. Our success here like gradua- tion, special honors, good friends, and great teams are memories that will give us confi- dence forever. In the future, after we have left behind our high school years, and have each followed our dreams to wherever they may lead us. Let us not forget who and what we are. We are the Eau Claire High School Class of 1988. This is a title worthy of the best. And that is what we are. I 7 Spirit is not just going to a game and cheering for our team or being the loud- est at an assembly, but goes much deep- er. Spirit is an attitude. It is showing respect towards classmates, teachers, and faculty. Spirit is making long last- ing friendships among people we enjoy. It is making visitors feel at home in our school. Spirit is doing all that we can to make our school the best that it can be. It is being happy and enjoying ourselves at school. Spirit is being able to hold our heads high and proudly say, “I love Eau Claire High!” We challenge you to catch the Beaver Spirit! Clockwise (from upper right corner): 1) Ms. Erickson catches the spirit of having fun as she gives her best immitation of Mae West.; 2) Sopho- more Bill Steinke catches the spirit of Homecom- ing week as he waits for the musical chairs compe- tition to begin.; 3) The Sophomore Class caught that Beaver Spirit as they captured first place in the Spirit Wall Competition during Winterfest.; 4) Mr. Cherry exhibits the ole Good morning” spirit.; 5) Senior Tim Glavach catches the football spirit as other members of the team cheer in agreement at their assembly. a 9 Clockwise (from upper right corner): 1) E.C.H.S. — We’re proud of it!; 2) Friendships are the best part of Eau Claire's spirit.; 3) Mrs. Lindemuth catches the spirit of teaching.; 4) Seniors Tim Gentry, Dennis Alex- ander, Kevin Boyd, Joel De France, Kevin Word, and Juniors Eddie An- derson and Sidney Tyson enjoy the fun of friends as they catch the spir- it of assemblies.; 5) Sophomores Chris Prillwitz and Karri Coffeen catch the spirit of friendship; 6) Mr. Burchard catches the spirit of Eau Claire’s “clowning around”! 10 State Champions Todd Hess has been a part of Eau Claire’s Var- siety Wrestling team for four years and qualified for state competition all four years. He placed in state competition three years. As a Sophomore, Todd placed sixth in the state at 126 pounds. As a Junior, he placed fifth in the state at 132 pounds. As a Senior, he finally accomplished what he wanted to do all along. He won the State Champi- onship at 145 pounds and became Eau Claire’s first State Champion ever, in any sport. We are all proud of Todd and we wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors. Kevin Moore, Dennis Alexander, Douglas Miller, and Todd Anderson composed the 400 m. and 800 m. track relay teams. They broke the school record and their own record many times. After taking first in the Conference meet, Rotary meet, and Regionals, they finally met their final goal by capturing the State Championship in both the 400 m. and 800 m. relay. To top it all off, Kevin Moore also placed second in the state in the 200 m. dash. Overall Eau Claire placed fourth in the state. We are very proud of these guys for their accomplishments and for giving Eau Claire’s track program a good name. We wish them good luck with everything they pursue in the future. 12 SENIORS Most Gullible: Michael Pratl and Lisa Bishop. “Have I got a deal for you ...” “Oh, really?” Most Happy-Go-Lucky: Roshanda Jackson and Fred Williams. We get so consumed by the desire to graduate that we miss all of the beauty that surrounds us. We forget to look beyond ourselves. But there is so much to see and to appreciate. Our school is unique. It is situated in a beautiful area. We can look out the window and really appreciate where we are. We think of graduation as an end, but commence- ment means “a beginning.” And as we start our new road to success, we should stop and reflect upon all the memories we have of Eau Claire. Salutatorian Mark Adams And Valedictorian Rodney Nimtz We would like to congratulate Vale- dictorian Rodney Nimtz and Salutato- rian Mark Adams for being the top two students of the Senior Class of 1988. They contributed a big part of their lives to the improvement of Eau Claire High by maintaining the highest grade point averages and participating in ex- tra curricular activities. Good luck in college and with all you do in the fu- ture. You can both be very proud. The Yearbook Staff 17 The Class Of 1988 We’re good and we know it! The Senior Class half pays attention as memories of the last four years flow through their heads. Mr. Sawatzki watches as Ann Garski takes the first step towards the awaiting crowd. 18 Natacha Paredes says, “Hey look Mrs. Jewell, I did it!” We can’t believe we’re actually graduating! Victor and John Wright, Marvin Daugherty, and Joe Fields say, “Don’t worry about us, we’ve got it all under control!” Senior Class President, Rodney Nimtz hands the leadership key over to Junior Class Presi- dent, Billy Trail. Laura Elston and Pam Otte agree that friends are what made it all worthwhile. “This is easier than I thought it would be,” says Carole Williams. Steve Wilcox, Kevin Edmundson, James Clark, and Rodney Hey Marvin, aren’t you supposed to be paying attention? Nimtz are talking about the good ol’ times before graduation. 20 Pam Otte is happy because Billy Trail didn’t drop the arch on her as he promised before graduation! Juniors, Joel Bowers and Michael Pullins work faithfully on the arches for gradua- tion. Seniors are hard work, aren’t they? Did you find who you were looking for, Debbie?!? FACULTY Superintendent’s Office Glenn Bachman, our new superinten- dent has made a comment about his first year in office. “The Eau Claire Schools and communi- ty are an exciting place to live and work. I see so many opportunities provided for our students and citizens to enjoy a quali- ty of life that is unlike many schools and communities. The Eau Claire students are friendly, outgoing, and supportive in making their schools and their education the best it can possibly be. The Eau Claire staff is dedicated to achieving excellence in its schools and community. The citizens of Eau Claire have been most receptive to ideas of improving the educational services to the students and community. Eau Claire is an excellent community in which to live and attend school.” Secretaries Mr. Bachman 22 Board Of Education Front row: Brenda Bishop, Chris Peters, Glenn Bachman. The Yearbook class has asked some of the teachers to share with us one of their unforgetable mo- ments. One of the questions we had asked was, “What has been the most embarrassing incident, one that you’ll never forget?” Here are some of the replies we received. Mr. Petersen — “My most embar- rassing incident occurred while I was a Junior in high school. My folks had a house full of company and I was ‘experimenting’ with some chemicals in the basement. Despite careful planning, the mix- ture of charcoal, sulfur and potas- sium nitrate burned furiously af- ter ignition, producing a large amount of smoke which filled the house, oops!” Miss Erickson — “My most em- barrassing moment happened when I tried to read tornado drill directions during a fire drill.” Mr. Kime — “When I was lectur- ing in front of class and discovered my zipper was down.” Miss VanTuyl — “When my alarm did not go off and I thought I would be late for school, I dressed so fast that I arrived at school with my warm-up pants on backwards.” Mr. Sawatzki — “When I ripped my pants in front of a class and I didn’t realize they were ripped. I couldn’t figure out why everyone was laughing everytime I turned around to write on the board.” Mr. Derucki — “When I broke my finger while being evaluated by Mr. Gohlke.” 26 Mr. Petersen Miss VanTuyl Miss Erickson does her Mae West impression. Bottom L to R: Shari Watts, Lisa Bishop, Kim Fryer 48 The 1987 varsity girls’ basketball team went 10-10 having a 500 season. Good job. With only 6 girls on the team count them (Kim Fryer, Suzette John- son, Sandy Hudson, Shari Watts, Jill Ra- kauski, and Lisa Bishop), it had to take some courage knowing that there was only one person on the bench to give them a break. The girls varsity team did an outstanding job for the numbers they had. To go out on the basketball court and to play a solid hour of basketball, really shows their spirit and pride in their school. Suzette Johnson and Lisa Bishop look on as Kim Fryer battles for the ball. Eau Claire Beaver, Kim Fryer tries to block the shot as Suzette Johnson, Lisa Bishop and Jill Rakauski look for the rebound. The girls fell only 2 games short of this. These girls have enough ability to shoot a perfect season next year. With only 8 girls on the team, the season became very tough. You have to hand it to them, they didn’t give up. They always fought hard to keep the spirit and pride alive at E.C.H.S. The 1987 Eau Claire Junior Varsity football team finished the season with a 5-4 record. The season start- ed with a number of wins, but the team lost a few of close games later in the season. During the length of the season, injuries forced the athletes to play positions they weren’t familiar with on very short notice. By the end of the season, the team had only 3 players with previous football experience. The others advanced to the Varsity team. During the course of the season each athlete demonstrated a great deal of improvement in his individual play, and in team spirit. Together, they will help continue the improving tradition of Eau Claire football. 51 Varsity Football Goes 5-4 Sitting: Managers Laura Elston, Wendy Vicini First Row, L to R: Dennis Wooden, Matt Kelley, Todd Hess, Dan Turbyfill, Scott Langer, Rich Bower, Mat Disterheft, Second Row, L to R: Kevin Moore, Joe Fields, Bill Trail, Greg Dohm, Jeff Priebe, Tim Glavach, Third Row, L to R: Coaches Tom Ferry, Denton Kime, Lenny Broyles, Darren Priebe, Marvin Daugherty, Gary Case and coach Ryan Pfahler A winning season was something that Coach Tom Ferry and the rest of the Eau Claire Fighting Beavers hoped to accomplish this year. They did just that with a 5-4 record. Winning the first four games and leading in the Red Arrow Conference with a 4-0 record, it looked as if the Beavers were going to be undefeated. Then, October 2nd came around and the Fighting Beavers were taking on the Bridgman Bees. It was a cold, and wet night. The statistics showed that the Beavers had won the game in every aspect, but came up short with a score of 0-6 on an 85 yard run by a Bridgman running back. E.C. now stood 4-1. The Beavers came back the following week to play Hartford and fell to a 6-12 loss with a 4-2 record in the Red Arrow Conference. But the Beavers were bound and determined to win their Homecoming game against the Galien Gaels for themselves and also for the communi- ty, and still be in the run for the Red Arrow Conference Champs. With that thought in mind the Beavers dominated the whole game, crushing the Gaels 32-0. The Beavers would have to beat the Bangor Vikings on October 23, in order to have a share in the Conference victory. At 7:30 p.m. the Beavers kicked the ball to the Vikings. Neither team scored the entire first half because of the poor weather and play, Bangor came out and scored 28 points on the Beavers. Eau Claire lost two starters in the game due to injuries and another was ejected from the game. E.C. was no longer a contestant in the Red Arrow Conference crown. Even though the Beavers were out of the Red Arrow race, they would face archrival, Berrien Springs, next week for their last game of the season. Eau Claire hit the field with pride and the desire to win, but Berrien Springs also had that desire. The Shamrocks came out and scored 21 points, but the Beavers would not be shut out and scored 6 before the half was over. That was the last and only time the Beavers scored in the entire game. At the end, the score stood at 6-47. The Eau Claire Beavers turned out to be a great success this year, which was no surprise to us! Thanks for the great memories and thrills. To all the Seniors, good luck in the future and to the Juniors go get them next year. Red Arrow award winners are: 5 Junior Greg Dohm, 77 Junior Bill Trail and 88 Senior Darren Priebe. As long as they have fun, who cares if it took Joel DeFrance 10 minutes to get his ball out (as the rest of the team laughed) of the water. Or if it took Shannon Smith 6 strokes on a par 3? Eau Claire’s 1987-88 Volleyball team was great. The team had good perform- ers who “hung in there”, even when the going got tough. In the game against Berrien Springs, you gals worked until the last minute, yet fell short two points of being in the final district game. The five returning girls, for next year Amy Ameling, Penny Vicini, Holly Wagner, Tonya Williams, and Angie Winston were high spirited and helped the team out a lot. The record speaks for itself for the rest of the season. The four returning lettermen and the recruits from the Junior Varsity reached their goal of being the Red Arrow Champions. They only fell short one game from district champs in their loss to the River Val- ley Mustangs. We’re look- ing forward to a promising future. Good job team, and good luck. Some J.V. players moved up to the team during the course of the season. The talent of these young men will help power the varsity team next year. The J.V. team was very successful because they worked and won as a team. We look forward to seeing them play next year. 65 Varsity Wrestling Bottom L to R: Mike Allerton, Tony Murphy, Steve Stanford, Scott Langer, Todd Hess, Shane Laucsh Top L to R: Laura Elston, Coach Paul Johnson, Jeff Priebe, Bill Trail, Greg Dohm, Mike Hickmen, Mark Spoonholtz, Mark Jefferies, and Coach Hartman World’s greatest staller, Tony Murphy, practices his techniques. Shane Lausch holds on for a victory. The Fighting Beavers for the 1987-88 season consist- ed of 12 wrestlers, including 8 returners. Our Beavers posted a 12-7 record in dual meets, and were very pow- erful in the invitationals. Beaver wrestlers were the Lawton Invitational Champions, the Covert Invitation- al Runners-up, and the Conference Runners-up. Six men entered the district tournament and six qualified for regionals. Two wrestlers qualified for state. The first day of State Competition took out one of our Fighting Beavers, but one still remained. A bye in the first round put him in the championship contest. By 9 A.M. the championship match had begun. Six minutes later it ended and the first Eau Claire State Champ emerged. This championship gives the other men something to shoot for next season. Good job men. 67 Senior wrestler, Todd Hess, has things wrapped up. Bill Steinke nonchalantly ignores Mark Spoonholtz’s serious conversation. Tennis Hey Becky, don’t miss the ball! Good Job Team! Along with that, they took a third place overall in the Red Arrow Conference, a fourth place in the Re- gional, and a fourth place in State Competition. Many school records, along with other records were established through- out the season. Key seniors for this year were Kevin Moore, Den- nis Alexander, Douglas Miller, and Todd Ander- son. All of these athletes qualified and placed in the state meet along with be- ing the leading point get- ters of the team. The key underclassmen were Richard Bower and Mike Robinson. These two athletes were the highest point getters of the underclassmen. The track team did a great job and they can tru- ly be proud. A letter from Coach Joyce Williams. Being varsity softball coach has been a learning experience. I expected a lot from the team through attitude, dedication and themselves as athletes. Each and every member of the team had a job to do, and each possessed the special qualities it takes to be a competi- tive team; but I regret to say there were times when we gave up on ourselves as a team and as athletes. Coaching was a challenging experience and I hope each member of the team realizes the importance of being on a team. The E.C. emblem should be worn with pride, no matter if you win or lose a contest. Show pride in yourselves as well as in your school. Joyce Williams The 1988 Red Arrow Conference winners for softball were Lisa Bishop and honorable mention Kim Fryer and Susan Skibbie. Sophomore Sharee Williams says, “What do you mean ball four”. Softball Senior Traci Abbott says, “Don’t mess with me”. Sophomore Shelley Smith makes her grand exit. With very few girls, the Beaver team posted a 4-9 season. These girls have a lot of potential, especial- ly in their pitching. The main thing that held them down was attendance problems. Our girls have a great team with an out- standing coach and are improving every season. Good Luck! The 1987-88 Beaver Baseball Team had a tough time getting things going this season. The team of 12 players consisted of 3 Seniors: Fred Williams, Darren Priebe, and Matt Kelly. Although our Beavers had under a 500 season, that never really deterred their spirit. When they were down, they always had someone to bring them back up as the Beaver’s pitching staff was one of the best in the Red Arrow Conference. Two All-Conference players this year were Jeff Priebe and Darren Priebe. Coach Cherry looks on in amazement as the Beavers gun down another opponent!!! ACTIVITIES AND ORGANIZATIONS Homecoming: . . And Don’t You Forget, Homecoming week this year was definitely very special. It all began with the Student Senate Assembly on Wednesday, Oct. 14. All students paid fifty cents and participated in an hour long “educational experience” where the different classes competed against each other. The wacky games made the day fun for everyone whether they were directly involved or not. The Mr. Beaver Contest 1987-88, was held on Thursday, Oct. 15, in the evening. Eight contestants posed, flexed, answered a question, smiled, modeled street clothes and swim wear for the four judges. Contestants for the evening were; Danny Turbyfill, Mike Pratl, John Adams, Todd Hess, Darren Priebe, Todd Anderson, Tim Glavach, and Doug Enders. Wendy Vicini, and Robin Robertson were escorts. Pam Otte was the Master of Ceremonies, and Tiffany Hill crowned Todd Anderson; the new Mr. Beaver! Definitely a success, the excitement will long be remembered. Friday, spirits and anticipations soared with the coming of that night’s game against Galien. The Cheerleader Assembly was a real spirit builder thanks to Mr. Peterson’s Pep Band, and to the Cheerleaders (of Course) with their strobe light pom-pon routine and spirit cheers. Seniors won the Class Competition and the Spirit Stick. Mr. Hartman introduced the players for the night’s game, along with the Homecoming King Queen finalists. They were; Darren Priebe, Todd Anderson, Todd Hess, Danny Turbyfill, and Joe Fields for King. Tiffany Hill, Kim Fryer, Shelley Burkett, Wendy Vicini, and Robin Robertson for Queen. The school day ended, in pure excitement! But we weren’t finished yet! The Homecoming Parade through town included the E.C.H.S. Marching Band, Jr. High Band, Homecoming King Queen finalists, Eau Claire Fire Dept., Pom-Pons, Majorettes, and Cheerleaders. Bringing up the rear, came the five class floats, built during the week, to portray this year’s theme; “Leave It To The Beavers.” Later that night, at the game, the float contest results were announced. Eighth grade 5th, Juniors 4th, Freshmen 3rd, Sophomores 2nd. and SENIORS 1st! Then, the moment of truth. Homecoming finalists were called onto the field, as the band played “Memory.” Last year’s Homecoming Queen, Cherie Eyerly, walked through them all over and over, finally stopping at Todd Anderson, and Kim Fryer; the new Homecoming King and Queen! The night wore on, and brought a huge Victory for Eau Claire, The Beaver gridders brought Galien to their knees. A 32-0 score gave Eau Claire the first Homecoming win in many years. The night climaxed at the Homecoming dance at Lybrook Elementary School. U-93 provided the music, and everyone danced the night away. Mike Pratl, and Renee Robertson won the U-93 dance contest! What a week! It is one that won’t soon be forgotten. Seniors win the float contest again! E.C.H.S. Pep Band watches the game closely. Mr. Beaver, Senior Todd Anderson, tries to impress the judges. Leave It To The Beavers Senior Kim Fryer smiles, and Senior Todd Anderson breathes a sigh of relief for being crowned Homecoming Royalty, 1987. The theme of this year’s pageant was, “Eau Claire Presents Disney Films.” The girls danced, spoke, and walked for the judges before a capacity crowd. The highlight of the evening was when Robin Robertson was chosen 2nd Runner- Up, Carla Froelich was selected 1st Runner-Up, and Pamela Otte was crowned Miss Eau Claire 1988. Traci Abbott was selected as Miss Congeniality by her fellow contestants.
