The friends I have made, the things I have learned and the teachers who taught me, are all a part of me and I hope I'll never forget them. I'm grateful to the Lord that He has given me the ability to achieve the goals that I have through my par- ents, teachers, and friends. I wish the class of 87 the best of success in the future in whatever you pursue. Dean Disterheft As this year's Salutatorian, I will always be grateful for the opportunities presented by the school and faculty of E.C.H.S. My years here have not only been rewarding, but full of fun and friends whom I will never forget. The time in high school is too short to waste or take for granted, so my advise to all underclassmen is to take time and enjoy it before the years are gone forever. The Best Of Luck Craig James 45 Craig James 46 tfoutmmUq Royalty 1986 Cltpm Eyudy Douyfoi Gnmt 48 w Jt V - Homecoming this year was a great success. Many people became involved in the various activities. The cheerleaders organized an assembly. The stu- dent senate organized the major activities for the week. Due to bad weather the homecoming parade and the float judging were cancelled. The dance after the game, though, was a success. U-93 provided the music. Douglas Green and Cherie Eyerly reigned as Homecoming King and Queen. It was an evening of fun and school spirit. 49 Miu Em Claim 1986 β Kelly llofflb 50 Photo courtesy of Hafer Photography The theme of the 1987 Eau Claire Queen Contest was A Musical Salute to Michigan's Winter Wonderland. It was held on January 24th at the Eau Claire Commu- nity Center. Fourteen girls participated this year. Mr. David Gray presided as Master of Ceremonies. The contestants, last year's court, and former queens all did dance routines to different winter songs. Kelly Holle was crowned Miss Eau Claire. Tonja Wright was chosen 1st runner-up and Lisa Pyatt was selected as 2nd runner-up. Wendi Leitz was chosen Miss Congeniality by her fellow contestants. Other contestants were Dawn Bjes, Melissa Price, Sue Moore, Malinda Reese, Dina Trail, Cami Morrow, Cindy Disterheft, and Lori Layman. Tracie Stilwell and Cindy Nimtz were finalists. Congratulations to this year's new court. 51 Miii S 1 1987 The theme for the 1987 Sodus queen contest was Michigan, A Chorus Line Of Cities ' The contest was held, February 9, at the D. A.N.K. The entertain- ment this year was a fash- ion show presented by the contestants. Theresa Hudzinski was crowned Miss Sodus 1987. Cara Weber was chosen 1st runner-up, and Suzie Lange, a student at E. C.H.S., was chosen Miss Congeniality. Because of the small number of contestants, there was not a 2nd run- ner-up. Other contestants were: Dona Edwards a stu- dent at E.C.H.S. and Rox- anne Prillwitz. 52 hkglt Band Row One L. to R.: Kari Coffeen, Pam Otte, Kim Fryer, Wendy Vicini, Tiffany Hill, Kim Peters, Cami Morrow. Twenty five athletes finished a season which saw us accomplish the following: defeat two conference foes; secure our first shutout in several years; remain within reach of victory until the waning moments in four more of those games; established a consistent passing attack; developed a much higher in- tensity level; and demonstrated consistent improvement in several facets of the game. With this multitude of accomplishments, the groundwork has certainly been laid for future gridiron success at Eau Claire High School. We had 19 first year players out of a total of 28 who played all year. This team demonstrated a lot of desire and determina- tion as they lost 4 games by 6 points or less. They out- gained 8 of the 9 teams they played and were moving the ball down the field as time ran out. They grew in skill and dedication as the year progressed and will provide a growing foundation of athletics at Eau Claire High as well as successful lives after graduation. 63 l a ti f Got BaikdbaM Row 1, L. to R.: Jessica Dilts, Ann Garski, Lisa Bishop, Beth Edelberg. Row 2: Robert Johnson, Joel DeFrance, Joel Bowers, Joel Patterson. This years Beaver golf team had only one returning letterman, senior Ernie Watson. There were a number of first year golfers who played: seniors Joel Patterson, Rob- ert Johnson, and Willie Gray; juniors Traci Abbott, Shan- non Smith, and Joel DeFrance, and freshman Shelly Smith. Ernie and Shannon were the top two players for most of the season. The others who were in their first year, showed good improvement throughout the season. The Beavers won two matches on the year and finished last at the regionals. We are hopeful that the βrookies will improve and once again bring respectability to our golf team. 67 Fore! For the second year in a row, the Beavers finished second in the Red Arrow Conference with an 11-3 record. The losses came against conference champion Bangor (69-63) and third place Bridgman (62-50) and (51-49). In conference games the varsity averaged 69 points per game on offense and allowed 55 points per game on defense. Seniors Maurice Woods (16.7 avg), Rodney Alexander (10.0 avg), Willie Gray (8.6 avg), Kevin Lanier (3.8 avg), Robert Johnson (3.1 avg), Joel Patterson (2.5 avg), and Roger Allen (2,4 avg) contributed greatly to the Beavers success. Exciting come-from-behind victories occurred against LMC (63-61) on a game winning lay-up by Willie Gray and another βheart stopper occured against New Buffalo (55-54) on a game winning steal and layup by Rodney Alexander. The teams overall record was 14-7 including a loss to rival Berrien Springs in the District Tournament. Underclassmen who will help Eau Claire in the future are Kevin Boyd (15.1 avg), Dennis Alexander (6.4 avg), Joel DeFrance (3,8 avg), Immanuel Williams (5.27 avg), Tim Gentry (2.2 avg). Matt Parker (9.2 avg), and Sydney Tyson (6.7 avg). Red Arrow All-Conference honors went to forward Rodney Alexander (Senior, 3 year letterman) and guard Willie Gray (Senior, 2 year letterman). Basketball team was successful for many rea- sons. During the season we moved three players up to the Varsity level of compe- tition. Those players made a big contribution to help Eau Claire win some big games. Another reason we were successful at the J.V. level was a result of grow- ing together as a team. We developed a family atmo- sphere and a lot of young boys became men. This combination produced a record of 17-3. The entire team would like to thank the manager (Ron), Stat. people, bus drivers, par- ents, and all the other peo- ple who helped make this season a winner. A special thanks to Roy Freeman. After the final cuts, 12 were chosen for the Varsity team, but due to various reasons only 7 girls fin- ished the season on Varsity. These seven girls were very high spirited and, al- though out-numbered and out-sized by most teams, they still tried hard and worked as a team. They showed some improve- ment and proved that on a good night they could play with the best of the teams. Hitting was the strength of the team. Sandy Grand- berry (All-Conference) proved she could hit both from the front row and back row. Setting was an- other strong point as both Amy Ameling (Honorable Mention All-Conference) and Kim Fryer did good jobs in this area. The top server was Kim Fryer (87%). We look for bigger and better achievements from these girls in future years. Row 1, L. to R.: Cindy Disterheft, Sandra Marshall, Ann Garski, Lisa Bishop. Row 2: Amy Ameling, Beth Edelberg, Kim Fryer. Volley- ball season was a learning experience for all those who were involved. The progress our young squad made was exciting to see and be a part of. The high- light of the season was ty- ing for first place in pool play at the Hartford tour- nament. Our overall record of 14- 11 does not reflect the tal- ents and the abilities of this team. The girls are dedicated to hard work and self improvement. If the girls continue at this same pace, they will see nothing but success in the future. 74 l a tidij l Vteit fg Row 1, L. to R.: Mark Jeffries, John Wright, Frank Lopez, Parrish Robinson, Rome Gonzalez. After losing seven members from last year's conference championship team, the outlook for repeating as conference champions looked bleak. Only four letter- men returned from last year's team. After the first night of competition, the team had an 0- 3 record. It looked like it was going to be a long year. But, through hard work and a lot of gutty performances the team carved out a 10-8 dual meet record and 3-1 in the conference. We came back to win the conference tourna- ment, thus earning a share of the Red Arrow Conference Championship with Bridgman. All-Conference winners were Rome Gonzalez at 119, Todd Hess at 138, Ernie Watson at 145, and Bill Trail at HWT. Six Beaver wrestlers qualified for Regional Competi- tion: John Wright, Tony Murphey, Todd Hess, Ernie Watson, Greg Dohm, and Bill Trail, of these six, two made it to the State Finals where the team ended up 15th out of 82 teams. Ernie Watson finished 3rd and Todd Hess finished 5th. It was an exciting year for the Beavers. For the first time in years the wrestling Beavers were able to field a J.V. team. During the 1986-87 season, 32 young men par- ticipated in wrestling. Nearly all of these wres- tlers saw some action at the varsity level, at some time or other. There were a lot of new young faces on our squad. This makes the outlook for Beaver Wrestling appear to be excellent. The junior Beavers gained a lot of experience through numerous duals and three tournaments. With these young men and their dedication to work, we hope to continue to dominate the Red Arrow Conference in wrestling. Our hopes are on their shoulders. 77 Greg Dohm β High Point Rider. Greg accumulated 73 points during 1986 and one honorable mention. Our team missed second place by 18 points but showed a lot of class with all the trouble we had. They are six young people to be proud of. We will all miss Suzie next year but I am sure she'll be around to watch. 78 L. to R.: Glen Clark, Greg Dohm, Tim McCuan, Barb Youngblood, Andy Youngblood. Not pictured: Suzie Lange. Tim McCuan. This was Tim's first year and he did very well. Looking forward to '87. Barb and Andy Youngblood. Barb, Reserve (Hi-point) winner, had 64 points, winning 2 first and 1 second in Equitation over fences with an aged horse. We are proud of both Barb and Andy. Good job. 79 Glen Clark. He added 21 points for the team. This was his first time in competition and he did very well. The 1987 Tennis Team had eighteen players; this represents the most inter- est in Tennis over the last four years. Overall the team played well. They were in every match literal- ly to the end. Most area coaches felt the tennis team was the most im- proved team in the area and feel that Eau Claire is the team to watch in future seasons. Players this season were: Singles β 1 Sr. Ernie Watson, 2 Jr. Tim Gen- try, 3 Sr. Art Keene, 4 Fr. Becky Cathy and Sr. Geoff Abbott for a major portions of the season. Doubles β 1 Sr. Paul Kirby and Sr. Jerry Tim- mereck, 2 Sr. Wendi Leitz and Sr. Craig James, 3 Sr. Tracie Stilwell and Sr. Cherie Eyerly. Also playing this season were Juniors Joel De- France, Karl Stenske, and Shelly Burkett; Freshmen Mark Jeffries, Kristen Bur- kett, and Kari Coffeen; Se- nior Susan Lange. The girls who stayed out had alot of tal- ent and won most of their individual events in the dual meets. We're hoping to see more girls on our team next year. And we're look- ing forward to a better sea- son. We are also hoping to have more fans to cheer us on. With an empha- sis on fundamentals, hus- tle and attitude the players showed that they will be a team to be reasoned with next season. The season ended with the Beavers finishing 6th in the Red Arrow with an overall much improved 6- 18-1 record. Jim Florian ended his E.C.H.S. Varsity career by belting 3 home- runs this season.
