Sheppard My past four years at Eau Claire High School have been very enjoyable and educational. I would like to thank God, my parents, and my teachers for all they have taught me. I wish the class of '85 the best of luck in everything. I hope that each of us will hold many memories of our school years and will be successful in whatever we decide to do. Herbert Byron Sheppard Salutatorian Kenneth jC. Summer ford During my four years at Eau Claire High I've grown up. Thanks to the faculty I have become aware of something — you can't get something for nothing. My high school years have been a great source of knowledge and understanding and I know that I'm a better person because of them. I plan to attend Lake Michigan College for under- graduate study, then on to Western Michigan Univer- sity to pursue a career in engineering. To the class of 1986 and all the classses to follow: I wish each of you success in getting what you want out of life Best of Luck Kenneth L. The Senate was also involved in helping to organize the annual blood drive. We returned only four players from last year's varsity squad. This led to a tough season, as very few had the experience needed to be a very competitive team. This year has been a good learning experience for our young team. We played many teams with great- er size and experience than ours, which proved to be too much for us. We played well against them, and never gave up trying. Congratulations to these men for a brave and valiant effort. football 72 Coach Kruithoff Row 1 L to R: Karl Stenske, Jimmy Watson, Ron Hess, Bill Kublick, John Douglas, Kevin Moore, Franky Lopez. V. football Our junior varsity football squad may not have ful- filled some of their lofty expectations, however we were successful in accomplishing several of our aspira- tions. Twenty-two athletes finished the '84 campaign with a definite commitment to regular practice atten- dance, to satisfying training requirements, and most importantly, to fulfilling the academic standards set forth by the school for athletic eligibility. Our 1-8 record does not accurately reflect the quality of participation demonstrated by this gridron group. This squad had only three returnees from the '83 team — several sophomores were needed at the varsity level. Ineligibility problems forced many players to perform at a variety of positions unfamilar to them. Disregard- ing these two major factors, we were very competitive with all but two of the teams we encountered. High- lights of this season were our 30-0 victory over New Buffalo and two very close, back-to-back, 18-14 losses to our arch-rivals, Watervliet and Lake Michigan Catholic. A game-by-game synopsis of the year follows: Eau Claire 8 — Marcellus 14; Eau Claire 0 — Galien 22; Eau Claire 14 — Bangor 29; Eau Clair 30 — New Buffalo 0; Eau Claire 14 — Lk. Mich. Catholic 18; Eau Claire 14 — Watervliet 18; Eau Claire 0 — Bridgeman 46; Eau Claire 0 — Hartford 45; Eau Claire 0 — Lawton 12. Coach Ferry 73 L. to R; Ernie Watson, Jason Bowers, Bruce Ronk, Matthew Ronk, Todd Spoonholtz, Steve Burchard, Jeff Brown. m This year's Eau Claire golf team was one of the most successful in the school's history. Our dual match record of 5-7 consisted of the most wins in a season in over a decade. Senior golfers Jason Bowers, Jeff Brown, and Steve Burchard led the way in scoring and leadership. Other varsity letterwinners were juniors Jeff Robertson and Todd Spoonholtz, and sophomore Ernie Watson. Junior varsity letterwin- ners were sophomore Bruce Ronk and freshman Matt Ronk. Jason Bowers eneded the season with the team's lowest average per match, while Jeff Brown had the distinction of shooting the lowest round, a 39. It was a real pleasure to have been associated with the 1984-'85 Eau Claire Golf Team. In 1984 we had taken the next step, having increased our wins by 500%. We had become Lego Junior . The Magnificent Seven , led by senior Denise Mitchell and her last second shot against the Lakers, hotly contested all encounters of the worst kind and brought R-E-S-P-E-C- T to the Lady Beaver Program. This year's edition of Eau Claire Boys' Varsity Basketball was a learn- ing experience for all those who were involved. A total of 18 players saw varsity action this year and all contributed in some matter. Of the 18 young men who played, 2 were Freshmen, 6 were Sophomores, 7 were Juniors, and 3 were Seniors. The team had a 4-17 record, which can be attributed to inexperience and eligibility problems. Even though their record is not all that great, the team was in every ball game. They showed the attitude that no matter what the score, they could always come back, even when 25 points down. The team showed signs at the end of the year that they could develop into a consistent winner in the future. It is an explosive team and with consistency, experience, and good grades can be a winner. Receiving team awards this year were: Team Leader and M.V.P. Team Player Award . . . Most Improved Award Top Rebounding Award Academic Award ..... . . . . IV. basketball This year's JV Basketball team struggled early in the season, losing its first five games. However, the team was able to string together five wins in a row after Christmas vacation and finished the season with eight victories. Full court pressure and multiple zone de- fenses along with man-to-man pressure were the de- fensive keys. Roger Allen, Jim Florian, Willie Gray, Robert John- son, Kevin Lanier, Aaron Pargo, Joel Patterson, Bruce Ronk, Micheal Vinson, Walter Whitfield, and Maurice Woods were the sophomores on the team. Freshman players were Kevin Boyd and Immanual Williams. These young men learned the value of study in order to pass their classes. Unfortunately, some of them were not able to play all the time because of poor grades. Hopefully, the lesson was learned and it will enable them to be more consistent on the Varsity. Overall, the team played well together and overcame many obstacles in order to have the season they did. Many of these young men will definitely contribute to next year's Varsity. The 1984-85 Wrestling campaigne was marked by much improvement. The progress our young squad made was exciting to see and watch. The highlights of the season had to be our tie in a dual meet with the tough Lakers and our second place conference finish. Hosting the class C State regional brought much excitement to Eau Claire. We qualified five wrestlers in the regional and sent two young wrestlers to the state meet. Congratulations go out to all the members of this group on an excellent season. All our hard work paid off. Suddenly, it hap- pened. We defeated River Valley 5- 4 in a Pre-District game to get our- selves into a district championship for the first time since 1976. In the championships of the district we beat the favored team, Brandywine, 16-11 before losing the title game 8- 10 to Edwardsburg. Now, “we got the fever! We want to go back. This team was quite young in re- gard to experience. As a result, most of the season was spent im- proving each player's individual skills. If these people continue to im- prove their game, Eau Claire could be a contender for the regional championship in a couple of years. EAST OF M-139 925-9245 120 At Andrews a great education is never enough. Most of our nation's colleges think a great education is good enough. We don't. Like other Adventist colleges we think there's more. A lot more. Naturally, we at Andrews take pride in offering some of the finest degree programs in Adventist education. And of course we're happy with the high percentage of job placement among our graduat- ing students. But that's just the beginning. Because Andrews is a Sev- enth-day Adventist university, religious life is central to what an Andrews education is all about. Throughout your life you may have heard of higher education—higher values. At Andrews, you experience it. There's a genuine friendliness that permeates our campus. It includes people who are willing to reach out and help in all kinds of ways. People who care about you as a student and a person. People who work together. People who pray together. You see, at Andrews, throughout every activity and every course, you'll be im- mersed in an educational expe- rience along side people who share your commitment to Christ, and who believe, like you do, in the infinite worth of an Adventist education. So why go to college and just get a great education when you can attend Andrews University and get a great education... and then some. Discover Andrews. Call one of our admission counselors toll free: Nationwide call 1-800-253-2874. For Michigan residents dial 1-800632-2248.
