With each of these experiences came a growing inside of me which brought me closer to the person I am today. To God, my family, my teachers, and my classmates I owe my very life for they were the ones who taught me about life itself and it is only through this knowledge that I will find true happiness throughout my life. Thank you for making me what I am and for everything I am now capable of becoming. My memories and gratitude will last forever. Ronda Schlipp Salutatori an My four years of High School have held many special memories, that I will always carry with me. I plan to attend Lake Michigan Junior College to major in computers and farm management. To the class of 1983, I wish you all the best of luck in the future. During the week students par- ticipated in such activities as Poor Man’s Day, the Tug-of-War, the Mr. Beaver Con- test, the Slave Auction, and Slave Day. The Homecoming parade was held on Friday afternoon. Five floats were entered in the parade and the winner of the float contest would be announced at the halftime of the game later that evening. The game began at 7:30 — Eau Claire Beavers against the New Buffalo Bisons. The game ended in the Beaver’s favor 12-7. During halftime the 1982-83 Homecoming King and Queen were crowned — Ticky Dewberry and Rosemary Zepeda. The winning float belonged to the senior class. After the game the dance was held at the high school. Entertainment was pro- vided by “Fingerboard Square. All in all it was a week of fun and great times. 53 54 St udent Senate The Student Senate of 1982- 83 was a vast improvement over past years. The members of the Senate introduced some new ac- tivities and did their best to im- prove school spirit. Led by president Debbie Davis, the Senate arranged ac- tivities and schedules for homecoming — such things as class competitions, tug-o-war, etc. Throughout the year, they held various activities, also. There was the Halloween Costume Day, the times movies were shown to the student body, and a blood drive to help our community. Everyone, teachers and students alike, seemed more involved. The Senate worked hard this year. The student body thanks them for their time and energy. Keep up the good work! 55 a loir Front Row: Mr Petersen. Felicia Williams. Rosemary Zepeda. Sherry Dickerson. Uariilu DootUi This year’s Varsity Football squad was comprised of twenty members, only three of whom had regular varsity experience from the previous season. Our season record, to a large degree, reflected this inexperience. This factor was highlighted through our inability to move the ball con- sistently on offense. However, we stressed defense throughout the campaign, and felt we demonstrated continual improve- ment in this category. With the exception of our opening contest with Gobles, our defense kept us competitive into the fourth quarter with all our opponents. Regardless of the final scores of the contests, this year’s gridiron crew exhibited a great deal of courage and determina- tion throughout the season. They were consistently outmanned both in size and ability, but they chose never to surrender to the opposition. Two members of the team made the Red Arrow All- Conference team. Rick Sayre was named to the first team on the defense line. Tom Garland was named for the second year in a row as the first team center in the Red Arrow. In addition, Tom received first team acclaim from his linebacker slot, a posi- tion from which he led our team in total tackles on the season. Also, he was the only member of the squad to be a three-year var- sity letterman. Special awards voted on by the team members were as follows: Best Offensive Back Mike Roth Best Defensive Back Scott Smith Best Receiver Jeff Jinkins Best Linebacker Tom Garland Best Offensive Line Ted Coffeen Best Offensive Line Tom Garland Best Defensive Line Rick Sayre SAVAGE Tom Garland 70 Welcome to Miller time! The girls were a scrappy bunch who were in most of the games they played. But, due to a lack of depth at key positions, the girls came up on the short end of the score. The girls’ two victories this year were over Coloma and New Buffalo. Karen Kremers was selected to the Red Arrow All Conference Team and became the all time leading career rebounder with 472 rebounds. She became the all time leading scorer with 377 points. MIDSEASON TEAM MEMBER: It’s a good thing I’m a lady or I would have punched 12’s lights out for the elbow she gave me. You should have heard what she called me after the game! Did you see the way those smart alecks shook our hands after the game? Oh. can I have my earrings now? The JV girls were a strange and lovable breed this season as they combined inex- perience. competitiveness, and a lady-like air in making great strides in basketball savy. They were winners because they never quit trying to excel. They won 4 games, one a last second thriller. They put the vaunted LMC girls on their ears, taking them to the final minutes before losing. The 82-83 Beavers faced a nearly insurmountable task after being devastated by graduation and transfers. The glitter of the 81-82 season quickly faded. If you consider W's and L’s, you see the team as losers. But if you look beyond the won-lost col- umn, you would find young men who never believed that they were beaten, never quit trying, and never lacked pride. They truely experienced the spectrum of the agony and the ecstacy. In- dividually, there were many accomplishments: Harold Wiggins — Honorable Mention Red Arrow, All Conference, Super Sub, Mr. Hustle and MVP Bryan Patterson — Mr. Defense, Mr. Offense, and Leading Rebounder (Mr. Steak) David Dohm — Team Captain, Co-Academic Ace, Fewest Errors (Mr. Perfect) Tom Sapp — Mr. Percentage Ticky Dewberry — Leading Assist Man (Mr. Eyes) Jeff Jinkins — Best Free Throw Shooter (Mr. Bunny) Andre Golliday — Most Steals (Mr. Thief) Don Bishop — Most Improved Player George Dohm — Co-Academic Ace 77 I have to shoot it that far? 78 I put my feet how? J-V- EaiLtUK This year’s version of the Junior Beavers ended as 12-8 on the hardwood court. The team was involved in many an exciting game. Several of these games were not decided until the last few seconds. As a group the J.V. Beavers excelled in team quickness and hustle. Overall the group was a fun one to work with. They overcame many an adversary to achieve a winning record. The team was made up of: Juniors Keith Moore, Darin Taylor, Tracy Nixon and Leon Hardin; Sophomores Anthony Sisson, Duane McKinney, Billy Joe Harris, Eric Pyatt, Mickey Rogers and Tony Harvey; Freshman Dwight Miller and Tim Allen. 79 Front Row: Mark Garland, David Smith. Tim Cahoon, Ricky Sayre, Jamie Davis. Ron Hess. Row Two: Coach Ferry. Dan Norris. Mark Hart. Tom Garland, Frank Renfrow. Craig Flowers, Tom Lange. Scott Smith, Randy Dohm, Dean Froehlich. Bo Elston. The 1982-83 wrestling team experienced a successful season, regardless of the minimal number of squad members. As a team, our grapplers secured five dual match victories, which was truly commendable, consider- ing the number of weight classes they forfeited prior to the onset of each contest. Individually, our wrestlers won a total of 165 matches and lost only 128. These accomplishments were made by a team which included only three seniors. The seniors, Dean Froehlich, Rick Sayre and Tom Garland, were also our team captains. All team members are listed below accompanied by their respective weight classes and season records: 98 lbs. — Jamie Davis, 19-17-1; 119 lbs. — Rick Sayre, 44-3; 132 lbs. — Mark Garland. 2-8; 132 lbs. — Bo Elston, 26-13-1; 138 lbs. — Dean Froehlich, 26-6; 145 lbs. — Tom Lange, 4-14; 155 lbs. — Tom Garland, 13-16; 167 lbs. — Randy Dohm, 4-23; 185 lbs. — Frank Renfrow, 18-20; and 198 lbs. — Craig Flowers, 9-8. Rick, our only four-year varsity letter winner, climaxed an outstanding high school career by placing first in districts and regionals and then capturing second in the Class C State Tournament at 119 lbs. 80 81 Vardity When the 1983 Volleyball team didn’t capture their share of wins, I began to wonder if we could consider ourselves suc- cessful in any way. However, when personal strengths such as dependability, consistency and responsibility, were considered, I knew that this team could go on to pursue and achieve their own goals when they were ready. The team will sorely miss its nucleus of Seniors: Becky Holle, Pam Greer, Hope Otte. Also greatly missed will be: Karen Kramers, who was voted MVP; Marilyn Hightower, voted Most Improved; and Karleen Stover, 1983 100% Club Winner for Serving Excellence. Best wishes to all team members as you pursue new goals and thank you for your cooperativeness this season. Coach Beth Reum Hope Otte. Mike Roth, Cooky Dyrcz. Jennii The 1983 Eau Claire Tennis team had a very respectable season. It finished with a 3-5 dual match record. The three wins represent a tremendous im- provement over the 1982 season. One reason for the improved record was the fact that more players put in extra time in order to im- prove their play and it showed greatly on the court. Many matches were very close and a few were deter- mined by tie breakers at the end. The next tennis season should see even greater improvements because the overall team is quite young. Only four seniors represented the Beavers in 1983. They were Scott Trowbridge at No. 2 singles, Stephanie Watkins and Dave Dohm at No. 2 doubles, (the only ones to advance in the 1983 regional tennis tournament) and Scott Smith, a first year player, who with his partner Sandy Trowbridge, were ceded second in the 1983 regionals. Other team members include Juniors — Mike Roth, Ted Coffeen, Cheryl Timmreck, Craig Flowers, Mike Schroeder; Sophomores — Cooky Dyrcz, San- dy Trowbridge, Joan Whitright, Annette Ertman; and Freshman — Glenda Phillips. 86 87 Front Row: Glenda Henslee, Sharry Dickerson, Julie Hart, Lisa Kirby, Heidi Emhoff, Kim Huff, Sandra Grandberry (Manager) Row Two: Coach Kime, Cherie Zielke, Tammy Frasher, Michele Juergensen, Karen Kremers, Lori Nimtz, Becky Holle, Julie Hartman, Chris Dohm. SoftUt A final season record of 7-20 does not impress many people. However, consider that four of the losses were by one run, and another five were by 3 or 2 runs. Still not impressed? Then consider these facts: The first season wherein the Beavers won both games of two doubleheaders (Deactur, Edwardsburg) — the first season wherein an Eau Claire pitcher threw a no-hit game (Cherie Zielke at Edwardsburg) — the first season wherein the defense converted both outs in an attempted double steal (Hartford). Want more? Read on: A new team record for most double plays in a season — a new team record for fewest strike outs in a season (we struck out half as often as our opponents) — a new team record for fewest total runs scored against us in a season — a new team record for lowest number of errors made in a season — and we stole twice as many bases as were stolen. Now how you gonna act? Now, toss in the additional facts that the team was young (only three returning regular players) and inex- perienced (no JV program for the last two years), and you’ve got to be impressed! The 1983 team had several outstanding individuals led by co—captains and All-Conference nominees Karen Kremers and Michele Juergensen. Both of these players also received several votes for the Most Valuable award. However, Chris Dohm was voted Most Valuable — an outstanding achievement never before ac- complished by a freshman. Chris played well anchoring center field, leading the team in extra-base hits, and collecting more homeruns by herself than all opponents combined. Sharry Dickerson also accomplished something new for an Eau Claire player when she was voted All-Conference honors for the third straight year. Sharry also was voted team leader by her teammates, and she received the Most Humorous and Guts player awards. As a final touch to a fine high school career, Sharry has been invited to try out for the Lake Michigan College softball team (second or third in Junior College National Rankings for the past two years). Cherie Zielke established herself as a pitcher to beware. She earned All-Conference honors, and tossed a no-hit game and two one-hit games. Cherie also led all Eau Claire pitchers in collecting most strike outs and in giving up fewest walks. Finally, but not least, Becky Holle came out for softball for the first time as a senior. She had much to learn, and learn she did. Becky’s hard work, consistent effort and positive attitude resulted in tremendous gains — and her teammates agreed. They voted her Most Improved Player. 88 —I I could be home by the pool. Coach Kime You want us to do what? This one won't get by.
