We hope every student of Eau Claire will have their share of special moments that will someday become the building blocks of their future lives. As these moments pass and you learn and grow, always remember: While it’s important to please others with your achievements in life, the most important person you must strive to please is yourself. Our best wishes to all the students of Eau Claire. I Congratulations to the Class of 1982! As you make your way into the current and unsettled world, the following eight words can improve the quality of life for both you and your neighbors: Honesty, workmanship, ambition, faith, education, charity, responsibility and courage. Good luck in the future! John C. Pfister 12 Mrs. Gast Mrs. Schlipp Mr. Pfister Mr. Laskarides Office of principal The 1981-82 school year has been a challenging one for our school. The teachers have been more than instructors, they’ve been warm and caring friends. I plan to attend Lake Michigan College, majoring in nursing. I’ll take with me many memories, and pride that our class has shared. I wish the class of 1982 the best of luck in the future. Our class is special because we’re so close. I hope when each of you looks back on this time, you will be proud, but above all, I hope you’ll be happy. My years at Eau Claire have been very rewarding and memorable ones. I know that I will be able to look back on these days with pride and satisfaction. I plan to attend Western Michigan University, to major in Accounting and minor in Data Processing. To the class of 1982, I wish each and every one of you the best of luck in attaining your future goals. Lori Ann Disterheft My past four years at Eau Claire High School are ones which I will never forget. I have gained much knowledge and ex- perience to make my life a success. I would like to thank the faculty and student body for making my high school years enjoyable and memorable. I plan to attend Davenport Business College in Kalamazoo, to major in Accounting. To the class of 1982, I wish you much success and happiness in the years to come. 'IJardity Our 1981 gridiron varsity encountered and dealt with a tremendous amount of adversity this past year. The season started almost a week late due to com- plications as a result of a defeated millage election. The “Pay for Play” policy eliminated some former participants in the program. Following our first game, we lost our starting quarterback to a knee injury and then proceeded to go through three other players at that position. Two additional players were lost for the duration of the season and minor injuries hampered the play of several other competitors, two of whom played with broken hands through seven games. Regardless of all these problems, our squad turned in many exciting performances throughout the year. We lost our opener 30-12 to Gobles, a state semi- finalist team, in a game that was not decided until the waning moments. The team bounced back and won a hard fought contest with Galien 20-14. Bridgman defeated us at home 24-0 in our third battle. The Beavers played their best game of the year when they defeated Berrien Springs 20-7. Watervliet ambushed us 32 to 8 in our homecoming. The next week we outscored New Buffalo 15-16 in a come-from-behind fourth quarter victory in a freezing rainstorm on Saturday afternoon. Our final three contests put us on the short end of things with losses to Lake Michigan Catholic 22-2, Hartford 26-14 and Cassopolis 42-7. Graduating senior players are Doug Adams, Don Elston, Eric Garland, Mike Groenke, Ed Hernandez, Tracy Newman, Dana Rose, Doug Schlipp, Glen Tan- ner and Matt Wolske. Two members of our offensive squad received first team Red Arrow Conference acclaim. Tom Garland was named at the center position and Jerry Hernandez was selected as a receiver. 54 55 First Row: Coach Sawalzki. Fernando Ramirez. Rob Walker. Don Bishop. Rob Enders. Keith Moore. The teams they defeated include Galien, the L.M.C. freshmen and the J.V. teams, and Hartford. The Beaver defeats came from Berrien Springs and Bridgman. The tie was a scoreless battle with Watervliet. During the season scoring leaders were Don Bishop, who tallied 44 points, and Rob Enders, who scored 18 points. Bishop and Enders were also rushing leaders. Bishop ran for 531 yards in 85 carries and Enders was a close second with 226 yards in 41 carries. The Beavers total yards in rushing were 1,474. In passing, the Beavers attempted 39 passes and completed 15 for a total of 182 yards. Mike Roth was the starting quarterback for the J.V.’s, with 21 attempted passes. He completed 7 for 52 yards. George Dohm, who moved up to varsity early in the season, threw 5 completions for 45 yards in 10 attempts, Tracy Nixon added 85 yards with 3 completions in 8 attempts. On the other end of the passes were Bo Elston, who caught 11 passes for 182 yards, Todd Dohm, who pulled down 3 for 19 yards and Tracy Nixon, who received one pass for a 10 yard gain. Standouts on defense were Jeff Jinkins, the leading tackier who picked up 57 tackles, Mike Turbyfill and Ricky Sayre with 43 and 42 tackles respectively and Rob Enders, who brought down 30 offenders. “The individuals improved greatly throughout the season. We tied our third game and won the last three.” 57 Qirt 4 Uardity (f adLetLaff 81-82 The Eau Claire Girls Basket- ball team was 3-16 for the 1981 season. The team showed good spirit and tremendous pride in themselves, but due to the lack of depth it wasn’t enough. They played their best game of the year against Watervliet beating them 50-32. As the season progressed, the team improved and the closeness of the contests towards the end of the year demonstrated this. It was the final year of competi- tion for 3 seniors, Laura Ellis, Vicki Molter, and Kim Vladic who contributed a lot to this year’s team. Underclassmen who also contributed greatly to this year’s team were: Juniors Karen Kremers, Terry Gilson, Michele Jeurgensen; Sophomore Julie Hart; and Freshman Tammy Cahoon. With these veterans returning for the 1982 season, hopefully the girls can improve on last year’s record. Girl’s W MasUUt When the first center jump Of the season occurred. Not a J.V. girl player Could be seen or heard. But finally halfway Through the year Twelve good-looking players Began to appear. They were all dressed In maroon and white And they gave the opposition Quite a fight. Although the record Showed more losses than wins There was not a game That they were not ever in. By season’s end Great strides had been made Such that as J.V.s They had all made the grade. Although the offense Was somewhat lacking Defensively we gave Our opposition a shellacking. With our sights now On a good next year Mr. Gray gives thanks To all those who appeared. 61 'What '5 going on up there?” ”Whatcha talkin' bout?” The pressure's on 62 Front Row: Janies Golliday. But their effort for that ac- complishment far outweighs the effort necessary to kiss your sister. This season's record was the best conference tally for ECHS in over 10 seasons. Add to this, only one player, James Golliday, attained All- Conference recognition. Superb team effort brought this season’s Beavers to the front of the pack. The Beavers won a total of 14 games this year and lost 7. The combined record of the three teams which the Varsity lost to was 59-12, including a state champion! Well done. Varsity! Pride! Pride! BasLtUl The Junior Beavers were 14-6 on the hardwood floor this year. They played some tough competition and had to play without some key players during some key games but always seemed to overcome adversity and give their best. Highlights of the season were the wins over Covert and L.M.C. and winning the Christmas Tournament. Team leaders in scoring were Don Bishop, George Dohm, Andre Golliday, Jeff Jinkins and Bryan Patterson. With this group of sophomores and juniors moving up to the Varsity next year, hopefully, they will mesh well with this year’s Varsity to bring Eau Claire a Conference Crown in 83. 65 Front Row: Jim Hanko. The 1981-1982 wrestling squad was composed of the following members (their respective records are also listed). Virgil Kugle (5-12), Joe Dominquez (4- 11), Randy Pritchard (17-14), Jim Hanko (45-2), Rick Sayre (38-6), Bo Elston (16-17), Dean Froehlich (27-9), Glenn Tanner (12-18), Don Elston (14-14), Tom Garland (5-18), Ed Hernandez (4-13), and John Huddleston (6-6). Our grapplers placed second in the Red Arrow Con- ference by defeating Watervliet, Hartford and Bridgman and losing only to Lake Michigan Catholic. Two members of the team, Hanko and Sayre, qualified for the state tournament, and of the two, Hanko placed 4th in his 119 pound weight division. As only three of this year’s team graduate (Jim, Glenn and Don) the ’82-’83 squad will have nine regulars returning with a host of athletes coming up off the junior high team. 67 68 I’m glad that's over! Front Row: Fran Ross, Gina Ertman. Vicki Moher. Karleen Stover, Pam Greer. Row Two: Coach Beth Reum, Laura Ellis, Karen Kremers, Hope One. Marilyn Williams, Tina Edelberg, Sue Davis, statistician. The 1982 Volleyball Team ended its best season ever with a second place finish in the Red Arrow Conference. Laura Ellis and captain Vicki Molter, senior members of this years squad, were the setters who helped to provide a hitting attack as un- equalled by any other E.C.H.S. team. Along with seniors Ellis and Molter, Karen Kremers and Hope Otte consistently showed opponents the power of a hard spike. Enhancing that fact, Karleen Stover, Marilyn Williams and Gina Ertman shared their quiet all around strengths as “team” players with a strong desire to succeed. First year players who would, in my opinion, equally share a “most improved” award would be Pam Greer, Fran Ross and Tina Edelberg. These gals stuck with it during the rough times when it wasn't easy to be a “rookie” on a varsity team. To the team who finally had a taste of team compassion and unity; to the fans who gave their support; and to the “unsung hero” Mr. Halgren, who kept the schedule running smoothly despite the pressures that go with the job of being “A.D. , a very fond thank you for making this season a truly special one. XJariitu EaseUl The 1982 edition of the Eau Claire Beaver baseball team finished the year with a 5 and 18 record. This year’s team included 7 seniors, 2 juniors, 3 sophomores, and 2 freshmen. The season started well but ended not so well. Mike Groenke was the lone all-conference selection from Eau Claire. With the 7 underclassmen back again, the prospects are bright for the future. 73 They went that way!! 74 Front Row: Kim Huff. Sharry Dickerson, Vicki Molier. Row Two: Tammy Frasher, Lori Nimlz, Kym Parritl, Michele Juergensen. Row Three: Laura Ellis, Cherie Zielke, Kim Vladic, Karen Kremers. Uardity S)oftbaf( 1982 After scrambling to earn money to play, and then being bothered by in- consistent pitching and sporadic hitting, the Beaver softball team struggl- ed to a 7-17 overall record and a fourth place Red Arrow Conference finish. Led by All Conference selections Kim Vladic at shortstop and Sharry Dickerson as catcher, the Beavers played tough defensive softball all season. Offensively the team was sparked by All Conference Honorable Men- tion players Laura Ellis at third base, Kym Parritt in left field, and Karen Kremers at first base. Kremers was also voted Most Valuable Player by her teammates. Vladic and Ellis shared co-captain honors, and they, plus Kremers, led the team in hitting. Dickerson kept everyone loose as team Most Humorous Player. Lori Nimtz at second base was voted Most Improved Player, followed closely in the voting by right fielder Tammy Frasher. And Vicki Molter, despite be- ing the hard-luck pitcher, turned in sparkling two, three, and four hit games. She also struck out the most batters, and at bat led the team with the highest on-base percentage. Although four key Eau Claire players graduate, a solid core of seasoned veterans will return. The Beaver Varsity for ’83 looks to the challenge of overall improvement, especially pitching and hitting. Positive attitude, hard work, and lots of hustle will combine to produce a team to be considered. 76 What form!?! 77 Front Row: David Dohm, Stephanie Watkins, Cheryl Timmreck, Dennis Bailey. Terry Gilson. Mike Schroeder. and Mike Roth. Row 2: Coach Sawatzki, Craig Flowers. Cookie Dyrcz. Scott Trowbridge, Sandy Trowbridge. Ted Coffeen, and Ray Basly. 1 Jennii The 1982 Eau Claire Tennis Team went through a rebuilding year, to say the least. The team boasted fourteen very dedicated tennis players who improved with each match that they played. As the season closed, the tennis team began to peak, when they defeated Benton Harbor in the team's last regular season match. Next year’s tennis team should be greatly improved, for this year the team only had one senior (Ray Bas- ly). With a veteran team returning in 1983, the Beavers should have a good chance in the regionals. Returning for the 1983 season will be seniors Terry Gilson, Stephanie Watkins, Scott Trowbridge, Dennis Bailey, and David Dohm. Also returning will be juniors Mike Roth, Cheryl Timmreck, Craig Flowers, Ted Coffeen, and Mike Schroeder. Returning sophomores will be Cookie Dyrcz and Sandy Trowbridge. 78 79 Golf The Future of the golf team is looking brighter. We finally won a match this season and we moved up eight places in the regionals. We had a large group of students interested in golf this year and we filled both a Varsity and Jr. Varsity team. I think the number of students interested in golf will help the team continue to improve and I'm looking forward to a better season next year. This year’s squads were the first to get caught up in the “pay- to-play” situation, due to a budget crunch for the athletic program. This resulted in several problems, as we lost some of the girls who could not pay. Our varsity squad shrank from the usual eight girls to six for the football season (Denise Clem, Lisa Blankenship — seniors; Ron- da Schlipp, Hope Otte, and Sandy Dickerson — juniors. Rosemary Zepeda was also on the squad, but left for other obligations.). The Junior Varsity squad grew to eight as we combined the freshman and sophomore girls when the freshman football pro- gram was scratched. Debbie Bjes, Candace Dewey, Diane Froehlich, Glenda Henslee, Tammy Post, Shelly Reynolds, Quin VanKampen and Cherie Zielke were the members of this squad. During the basketball season these girls served both as Junior Varsity and Freshman cheerleaders, sometimes having to split the groups when both Freshman and Junior Varsity games occurred on the same night. Both squads combined for the last home basketball game of the year to perform a “white-glove” routine for the fans and their parents. Terry Gilson joined the cheerleaders in this routine. This routine was well performed after many hours of hard work and practice, and was very well re- Front Row: Debbie Bjes. Candace Dewey. Shelly Reynolds. Tammy Post, Cherie Zielke. Quin VanKampen. The cheerleaders sold raffle tickets on a beautiful, hand crocheted afghan to help finance the athletic program. This resulted in a contribution of ap- proximately $200.00. 85 86 Slcti uitieS and Organizations £au CLire Jdigli Sell oof is privileged to have a number of activities and organizations. Senate There were many new faces in this year’s Student Senate and along with them came many new changes. The first event put on by the Senate was Homecoming week activities which included the obstacle course, slave day, a bon fire and tug of war between classes. For Thanksgiving a boy and girl were selected to represent each class in the annual turkey trot. The Student Senate also created many types of dress up day’s such as Western Day, Gangster Day, Rag Day, and Hat Day. For the first time in many years the Senate created much improve- ment in school spirit. They sold flags, made posters and supplied confetti for the games. 94 From Row: Mrs. Hahn. Tom Gilson. Q uiz This year’s team, composed of Tom Gilson (captain), Steve Pep- pel, Herb Sheppard, Kevin Masterson, Karleen Stover, Hope Otte, and Rae Ann Ward, has had the most success of any Eau Claire team in our six years of play. The team went into the quarter finals in the first round. Next year’s team is expected to do better, as only one senior, Kevin Masterson, is graduating. ona i J4onor Society The Honor Society at the begin- ning of the year was made up of four senior members: Christi Lancaster, Kevin Masterson, Lori Disterheft, and Kelly Coffeen. A bake sale in May provided funding for the Honors Night program which is held annually in April. The Honor Society plans and presents the Honors Night program, which honors all students from 7- 12th grades who earned a 3.0 average during the first semester of the year. During that evening, April 20, the society also inducted new members into the Blossomland Chapter of the Honor Society. Front Row: Tom Gilson, Denise Clem. Michelle Bonebright. The theme of Ragtime was car- ried out by a cute dance routine done by the contestants. Vicki Molter was chosen Miss Eau Claire 1982. Her court in- cluded first runnerup, Candis Price, and second runner-up, Kim Vladic. Ronda Schlipp was chosen Miss Congeniality. Other contestants included: Christi Lancaster, Hope Otte, Chris Ertman, Lisa Blankenship, Beth Cobb, Michelle Boncbright, Roxann Rodney, Linda Bennett, Denise Clem, and Lori Disterheft. Entertainment included songs sung by Miss Southwestern Michigan, Leslie Ambrose, and a dance routine performed by Michele Juergensen and Dave Burchett. The Master of Ceremonies was Jim Cassidy of WSJM and the escorts were Jim Hardin and Randy Schlipp. 97 The Miss Sodus Contest of 1982 was held on February 22nd at the D.A.N.K. The theme of the contest was “Disney on Parade — Disco Style” in which nine contestants participated. The reigning Miss Sodus, Susan Dohm, crowned the new queen, Miss Mary Fox of LMC High School. Her court consists of Karen Kruck (1st runner-up) and Cheryl Hahn (2nd runner-up), both of Michigan Lutheran High School. Chosen Miss Congeniality by the contestants was Tami Smith. Other contestants were Patty Michael, Brenda Graham, Lisa Martin, Brenda Ott, and Roxanne Costanza. 98 Cherie Zielke. Linda Bennett, Jon Keefer. Tammy Dohm (assistant coach). George Dohm. All in all we had a good year, placing 5th in small school competition. We are losing 2 valued riders to the Class of 1982, Rhonda Prillwitz and Linda Bennett. The saddest loss of all is our assistant coach, Tammy. We will all miss her very much. Linda Bennett was our high point rider, with 32 of our 108 points. George Dohm was next with 23; John Keefer, 2; Chcri Zielke, 3; Ronda Churchill, 7; Rhon- da Prillwitz, 12; and Michelle Cochran, 18. Our relay team had 11 points. Thanks for a wonderful group of equestrians to work with. Let’s recruit for next year. Mrs. Dohm Linda Bennett Michelle Cochran ZJrit ute to a m m y Being a member of the High School equestrian team for 2 years, she was high point rider in 80.” We went to state com- petition. winning 2nd place on team plac- ings. She helped coach in 81“ and was a friend to all. She won all around ap- paloosa in ‘77 MAWHC, then went to work training. She won all three of her trail classes in her last year High School team. She won all the classes available at the fair. Winning Appaloosa saddle class. Reserve Champion trail horse and several firsts in halter and showmanship. Graduation day. May 31. 1981, graduated with honors. She was a member of the National Honor Society her Jr. and Sr. year and among the top in her class. The love of horses and people in need gave Tammy a joyful life. If there was somebody she could give a helpful hand to she was there. She was a winner in every aspect of life and I’m sure she’s proud of all the friends that came to her farewell. In Volleyball her spike was overwhelm- ing. She was the captain of her team in both volleyball and basketball. In track, she went all out and broke the record in both shot put and discus in her Jr. year. Her Senior year she broke her own record 5 times more, holding the record of 33'6V: in shot put and I09'8 in discus. She also holds the record in both events for Red Arrow Conference her Jr. and Sr. year. 101 The 1981-82 prom was held at the St. Joe Elks Club. It was at- tended by many and was a great success. The band for this year’s prom was “Fingerboard Square,” which provided a variety of music for everyone's enjoyment. Congratulations to this year’s King and Queen, Randy Schlipp and Michelle Bonebright. Con- gratulations to the Junior class.
