('Ccfiuedtrian Jeam Our high school equestrian team rode to victory this year. In each of three meets they took a consistent second place. With a total of 222 points our final standing was third out of 29 schools. Needless to say, our team qualified for State competition, miss- ing first place by only three points. The run for high point rider was close with Tammy Dohm at 68 points and Brad Dohm at 67 points. Julie Krone tallied 29 points, George Dohm 5, Rhonda Prillwitz 13, Ronda Cnurchill 1, Michelle Cochran 14 and Linda Bennett 9. Our four man relay team — George Dohm, Ronda Churchill, Michelle Cochran and Linda Bennet tallied 14 points placing second in all four shows. I’m sad to say we are losing Tammy, Brad, and Julie to the graduating class of 1981. We’ll sure miss them, but I’m looking for a great team again next year with the great remaining horsemen. Thanks for a wonderful group of equestrians. 26 Mrs. Dohm The Eau Claire High School Prom was held on May 23,1981 at the St. Joseph Elks Club. It was attended by 175 people. One of the highlights of the evening was the crowning of the Prom King and Queen, Brad Dohm and Beth Ratter. Entertainment was provided by “Deuce.” All who attended the prom had a lovely time. 29 Class of 1981: Our best wishes to you at the completion of your basic school experience. This book, with pictures of friends and activities of your high school days, will provide you with many memories of meaningful experiences. Our goal was to prepare you to take part in a very practical world. Among the many important results of these thirteen years of formal education should be the following: 1) a competence in the skills of reading, writing, arithmetic and research, 2) the ability to think straight and to distinguish between fact and pro- paganda, 3) a respect for the other person’s rights, and 4) the courage to hold fast to that which is good while working hard to change that which should be better. Work hard — and good luck will come your way. William J. Horie 32 Mrs. Gast Mrs. Schlipp The class of ’81 enters into a society fac- ing the challenge of difficult economic and international crises. Meeting the ef- fects these crises will have on each graduate will not be an easy task. Arm yourselves with all the tools available to you educationally to better meet the most difficult times that have fac- ed ECHS graduates in my 11 years here. Good luck to all of you. John A. They help us in our choice of classes. They help us with career choices. They help us with our college preparation. They help us make sure that we meet the graduation re- quirements. They help us with our college testing. One of the most important things they do is to help us with any personal pro- blems that we might have. Without them, it would be a long school year. To them we give our thanks and ap- preciation for their hard work and concern. 35 Mr. Greenhaw Mrs. Greenhaw Mr. Down Mrs. Baker Miss Schilling Mrs. Krause Mr. Sawatzki Mr. Petersen Mr. Flagel Mr. Halgren Mr. Seifferlein 39 Mr. Krause 40 Standing L. to R.: Mrs. Westlake, Mrs. Blighton, Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Karn. Charge! 94 Keep on trucking. H-E-L-P!!! basket Laii The Eau Claire Girl’s Basketball Team finished the year with a 4-16 record. This year’s team was very young. It con- sisted of four sophomores Jenny Horie, Karen Kremers, Hope Otte and Terry Gilson; three juniors — Laura Ellis, Kim Vladic and Vicki Molter; and two seniors, Angie McAfee and Tammy Dohm. Angie McAfee and Laura Ellis were the team captains for the year. Sophomore Jenny Horie led the team in three categories: points scored, 258; rebounds, 220; and field goals, 112. Leading free throw shooter was Vicki Molter, who shot 50% from the line. First Row L. to R.: Kim Vladic, Angie McAfee, Vicki Molter, Terry Gilson. Second Row L. to R.: Hope Otte, Laura Ellis, Jenny Horie, Karen Kremers, Coach Eric Gohlke. That’s my girls! Second leading scorer was Kim Vladic with a 40% shooting accuracy followed by Jenny Horie with a 38% shooting accuracy. Best defensive player was Angie McAfee. The team’s strong points were rebounding and defense. With a little work on the offensive part of the game, things could improve greatly for next year. First Row L. to R.: Michelle Juergensen, Julie Hart, Candis Price. Sheri Dickerson. Second Row L. to R.: Coach Jerry Mitchell, Gina Ert- man, Karen Sempert, Becky Holle, Lisa Starsberry. Hand it over, Buster! The Jr. Varsity played 19 games and had a record of 3-16. The girls started the season slowly, hut picked up midway. We lost several games by 1 and 2 points. One thing for sure, the girls never lost their spirit for the game. They played with lots of heart and soul. Check her out! Only one returning starter from the 1979-1980 Conference Co-Champs foretold of a long season, but it was not to be. Led by seven seniors, the Beavers gained a third place finish in the conference behind state ranked LMC and Bridgman. The 10-10 season displayed the league’s leading scorer and top All Con- ference selection in senior Rick Grandberry and an Honorable Mention All Conference selection in senior Steve Hughes. The Beaver’s boasted that only one time were they ever out- rebounded. They set a school record of 52 rebounds in the tour- nament game against Brandywine. The 1-3-1 half court defense proved to be the nemesis of many opponents as the Beavers ex- cited the crowd with many fast break baskets. Individual awards for the 1980-81 season were as follows: Mr. “D” — Rick Grandberry Mr. “O” — Rick Grandberry Mr. Steak — Rick Grandberry Mr. Hustle — Steve Hughes Mr. Eyes — James Golliday Mr. P” — Mike Groenke Mr. “%” Mike Groenke Mr. Bunny — Rick Grandberry Super Sub — Steve Hughes Next year’s team should boast five lettermen, four of them starters, as the Beavers strive to regain the form of the 1979-80 co-champs. It just can’t be! 98 99 J.V. tBmULff First Row, L. to R.: Steve McAfee, Kevin Sears, Scott VanHorn, Terry Fryer, Andre Golliday, )erry Her- nandez. Second Row, L. to R.: Gina Weaver (manager), Jim Froehlick, Bill Bergan, Leon Newsome, Jeff Lanier, David Dohm, Coach Gohlke. This year’s accomplishment of the Junior Varsity Basketball Team was an exciting 15-4. They placed third in the conference behind Bridgman and L.M.C. The team overcame many obstacles in the course of the year and should be an exciting group to follow in the next few years. Team members included Jeff Lanier, Bill Bergan, Jerry Hernandez, David Dohm, Scott VanHorn, Leon Newsome, Andre Golliday, Jim Froehlich, Kevin Sears and Dennis Bailey. 100 Jr _______ This better be good! Two out of three use Ivory Liquid! freshman $asLetbafl The 1980-81 edition of Freshman basketball fought its way to a 7 win-9 loss record. Jeff Jinkins was the leading scorer over the entire season. As the season progressed, all members of the team improved their performance, both offensively and defensively. By tne end of the year the players were involved in the team concept of basketball. This group promises to add excitement to next year’s Junior Varsity Basketball Team as they lead it on to many more victories. Members of this year’s team included: Don Bishop, Ted Coffeen, George Dohm, Todd Dohm, Todd Ellis, Don Har- ris, Jeff Jinkins, Steve Kiggins, A1 Metz, Jon Roe, Mike Roth, Tom Sapp, Duane Whitman, Brian Pat- terson, and Keith Moore. The dedication and desire of the players was noticed and commented upon by many fans at the games. Keep up the good work! “His mom didn’t tie his shoes today!” 102 First Row L. to R.: Glen Tanner, Randy Pritchard, Jim Hanko, Bo Elston, Ricky Sayre, Dan Abbott. Second Row L. to R.: Ed Hernandez, Dean Froehlich, Don Elston, Craig Flowers, James Armstrong, John Cahoon, Brian Lange, Tom Garland, Bob Fortune. This year’s wrestling team did an outstanding job, considering the large number of underclassmen. Our dual record was 6-8 in the year. Our proudest accomplishment was a co-championship for the Red-Arrow Conference. Individually, the only two seniors on the team, John Cahoon and Brian Lange, both did outstanding jobs. Underclassmen Jim Hanko and Rick Savre both won Regional titles this year, placing them in the top eight wrestlers in the state. Best of luck to a fine wrestling team. Coach R. Krause 103 OK, Mac, this is a stick-up! 105 Coach Reum’s varsity fought hard to gain a third place after previously be- ing in the conference cellar. Improvement in all areas was evident. Co- captains were Tammy Dohm and Angie McAfee. Leading setters were Vicki Molter, Michelle Bonebright, and Con- ference Honorable Men- tion Selection Laura Ellis. Three sophomores who provided the essential depth were Karen Kremers, Sandy Dicker- son, and Hope Otte. Retur- ning to next year’s squad is a vast amount of ex- perienced varsity talent, with the probable addition of some strong competitors from the J.V. ranks. The J.V. team was boosted this year by the addition of Coach Chris Zoet. Zoet and her squad managed a 5-10 record in- cluding a big victory against L.M.C. A big thanks to both teams from your coaches, with the wish that you will continue to improve skills and accept the challenge of responsibility and dedication. First Row L. to R.: Michelle Bonebright, Angie McAfee, Vicki Molter, Sandy Dickerson Second Row L. to R.: Hope Otte, Tammy Dohm, Laura Ellis, Karen Kremers, Coach Reum. 106 You’d better win! Please, don't let me miss! 107 L. to R.: Justine Sayre, Karleen Stover, Solita Stansberry, Becky Holle, Sheri Bryant, Gina Weaver, Marilyn Williams, Gina Ertman, Coach Chris Zoit. QlrL’ $.V. The 1980-81 Eau Claire Junior Varsity Volleyball team posted a 5-10 record for the season. Every person on the team made her per- sonal contribution. Many close matches were lost, but in losing, each team member has won in reality. This team will know what it’s like to strive for a tough goal, in seasons to come and in life. The highlight match of the season came in defeating Lake Michigan Catholic (second in the conference!. Eau Claire worked as a team and won as a team.” The scores don’t show the excitement, enthusiasm, and hours of hard work these girls had put into this game and in- to many others. Eau Claire took the first game 15-10. L.M.C. bounced back 15-13 and in the last game of the match each team fought for every point awarded. E.C.H.S. came home with a final win 15-12. The individuals on the team are what made this team win. Many of the girls will be on var- sity next year, and will definitely help strengthen the team! 108 First Row, L. to R.: Jeff fenkins, Dana Rose, George Dohm, Ted Coffeen, Bryan Brown, Jim Hardin, Dan Ab- bott. BaUatl This year’s baseball team ended with a 4-15 record, due mostly to the lack of ex- perience and playing time. This year’s on- ly senior, Brian Brown, did an outstanding job as a pitcher. Also, freshman Jeff Jinkens did a very fine job on the infield and at the plate. An improvement on the number of unearned runs for the 81-82 year should improve on this year’s poor showing. no % in First Row, L. to R.: Kym Parritt, Missy Fairbanks, Shawn Herman, Kim Vladic, Vicki Molter, Sherry Dicker- son. Second Row, L. to R.: Coach Kime, Gina Ertman, Michelle Juergensen, Laura Ellis, Karen Kremers, Chris Ertman, Virginia Gonzalez. 'arsifij % SoftUl Despite a roller-coaster-ride 4-16 season, which included a victory over LMC and several give-away games to various opponents, the Varsity Beavers showed significant team improvement in the following categories: team fielding average, team on-base average, team total stolen bases, fewer stolen bases allowed, and fewer team total strike-outs commit- ted. Also vastly improved was Beaver cat- ching and pitching. Eau Claire finished fifth of seven in the Red Arrow Conference. The Beavers plac- ed outfielder Missy Fairbanks and catcher Sherry Dickerson on the All-Conference Team. Receiving honorable mention awards were infielder Kim Vladic and pit- cher Vicki Molter. Selected by a vote of the players were captains Dori Faher and Kim Vladic. Kim was also named the team’s Most Valuable Player. Good Humor Awards went to Dori Faher and Shawn Herman. Most Improved Players were Chris Ertman and Virginia Gonzalez. Sherry Dickerson received the Gutty Player Award. The upcoming 1982 season could be a banner year. With the return of 11 letter winners from the 18 Varsity, plus the addition of some select JV players, Eau Claire softball verges on the edge of winning glory. Needed still is the fire of positive player leadership, and the strength of determined individual committment. Come to think of it, a few extra base hits couldn’t hurt. 115 First Row, L. to R.: Sue Enders, Dianna Priebe, Lori Nimz, Linda Bennett, Laura Salas, Coach Gray. Second Row, L. to R.: Sandy Dickerson, Michelle Cochran, Ronda Steinke, Gina Weaver. Not pictured: Sherri Ronk, Tammy Frasher. “3oJ' Weall, (°- 3V ’m) The Junior Varsity Softball team had two con- tinual battles going throughout the season that they overcame in style. One was the level of competition. Eau Claire continually played bigger schools and upper classmen. Secondly, Mother Nature did her best to quell the team’s enthusiasm. Invariably, you could get a weather report for the week by simply checking which days the JV team had a scheduled game. Game days were rain days. Although five innings were the usual length of games, the Beaverettes still managed to hold leads on the likes of Buchanan, Dowagiac, Lakeshore and Benton Harbor before succumbing in the later innings. The entire team is anxiously anticipating next season because this year’s experience adds up to next year’s “W’s.” Individual award winners for this season as voted by their teammates were: Miss “Super Slugger” Miss “Hustle Miss “Guts” Miss “Cut-Up” Most Improved Most Valuable — Gina Weaver — Lori Nimz — Sandy Dickerson — Dianna Priebe — Rhonda Steinke — Sue Enders 116 First Row, L. to R.: Dennis Bailey. Jennid The 1981 Tennis Team was much better than its record of 2 wins and 7 losses indicated. Three mat- ches were decided by scores of 4-3 with the Beavers on the short end. Our team showed its substance in the 1981 Regional Tennis Tournament by coming up only four points shy of going to the State Tennis Championship. In the Regional, Eau Claire had a singles player, Jeff Sirk, qualify for the semi-finals before bowing to the eventual Champion of the Regional. Eau Claire also had two doubles teams: Leon Newsome and Mike Roth who went into the semi-finals before losing to the Regional Champions, and Scott Trowbridge and Dennis Bailey who reached the finals of the Regional Tournament before bowing out to an all senior team from Hamilton. With only two seniors on the team (Victor Gon- zalez and Ron Baskin) Eau Claire has to be con- sidered a contender in the 1982 Regional. If our players continue to play through the sum- mer and continue to improve at tennis, we may have some players in the 1982 State Tennis Tournament. 118 Coach Jerry Sawatzki 120 Front Row L. to R.: Mike Turbyfill, Graydon Pope, Ron Gatchell, Kevin Schultz. John Moore was second in the state meet in the 100 meter dash and sixth in the 200 meter dash. Steve Hughes was second in the state meet in the pole vault. The men’s team finished third in the conference. The Eau Claire women’s track team had a 1-7 dual meet record, but only had 8 members. School records were set by Angie McAfee in the 100 and 200 meter hurdles, Tammy Dohm in the shot and discus, and Jenny Horie in the 400 meter run and high jump.
