THE BEAVER GAZETTE The newspaper staff of 1963 has made a new attempt to produce a newspaper suitable to everyone’s interest which they called the’’BEAVER GAZETTE.’’About every two weeks a new paper came out containing gossip columns, class reports, cross-word puzzles, sports columns, the principal's comer, and other interesting articles. 3 Mr. Robert Young ren IN DEDICATION To Mr. Robert Youngren, Mr. Richard Brame, Mr. Jerry Wabeke, and Mr. Art Kiel, we dedicate our 1963 BEAVER TALES in appreciation for the fine measure of school spirit which you have instilled in our school this past year. Your untiring effort and interest has not gone unnoticed. We may not fully realize the time and dedication which you have devoted to us and our interests, but by this dedication we gratefully acknowledge your inspiration. BOARD OF EDUCATION STANDING: John Vermilya, Robert Koenig. Larence Kesterke. Max Stover. SITTING: Phil Rakauski. Clare Ferguson. John Burback, John Schadt. 5 ry Mr. John B. Vermilyn Superintendent of Eau Claire Public Schools SUPERINTENDENT'S MESSAGE This year will be one we will long remember, if for no other reason than the weather. Never in recorded school history has inclement weather forced the closing of schools for as great amount of time as it has this year. The problem seemed to be that no one could do a thing about it! In spite of all this, great strides have been made in our school community. Money for an addition to the Elementary School building has been voted by the people. We have a strong, dedicated school staff. Plans have been made to organize two Special Education rooms for next year. Currently, reorganization of area school districts is being studied. I am sure that through the combined efforts of all concerned, the Eau Claire Public Schools will continue to progress in a satisfactory manner. Mr. Robert Youngren Principal of Eau Claire Senior High School ADIEU! The small rivulet which gradually and laboriously meanders through nature's varied obstacles to ultimately culminate Its long journey is comparable to a senior's reaching com- mencement. The trials, tribulations and anxieties encountered from kindergarten through high school are suddenly forgotten and only the fond remembrance of the happier days have any important significance. As these last days, hours and minutes fly by like the rushing river now thundering uncontrollably into the vast sea. the common tendency is to have regrets about leaving. Thus, at this point, I would like to make you cognizant that your education is a continual process throughout life. What you have learned here or how well you have learned it will help determine your future success or failure. It has been a pleasure to work with you this past year, and please come back often to visit 7 and inform us of your progress. MR. VOTH You'll learn to spell if you learn nothing else! With the help of the ’’Big Four.” the 440 and 880 relay teams consisting of Leo Savich, Bill Martinic, Mike ladic, and John Deaner, the Eau Claire Beavers finished second in the conference, and won the Berrien Springs Relays. In the Berrien Relays, the ’’Big Four” totaled 49 of the 52 points for Eau Claire. The Beavers also finished second in the Regional. Besides these accomplishments, the Beavers also set several school records. These records are: Shot Put Mile Run Mile Relay 440 880 Berrien Relay Mike Vladic Gene Wright Vic Savich, Dennis Radke, Willie King, Gene Wright Leo Savich Big Four Big Four 45 feet, 8inches 4 minutes, 42 seconds 3 minutes, 44 seconds 51.8 seconds 1 minute, 35.2 seconds 1 minute, 11.3 seconds TALES OF THE BASEBALL TEAM The Eau Claire Beavers baseball team finished last season with a five and seven won and lost record. Although the record wasn’t too bad, the Beavers are expecting a much better season this year because of only losing four players from the team last year. The Beavers were lead by Virg Bradford and Dean Satre in both hitting and pitching last year. Both players won two games pitching and both batted over 400. STANDING: Lynn Schadt, Victor Savich. Jeff Vladlc. Mr. Richard Brame, Coach; Mr. Norman Lambert, Assistant Coach; Jim Flore. Leo Savich. and Jim Rakauski. EAU CLAIRE GOLF TEAM The Eau Claire gold team had a very good season by winning ten and losing four. The highlight of the season was the Beaver golfers placing third in the regional golf meet. This gave them the honor of playing in the state golf meet, and as a result the Beavers placed seventh in the state of Michigan. 28 FOOTBALL CHEERLEADERS KNEELING: Donna Kimball. Diane Bally. Bob Schilling Sterling Bailey Don Gatchell Victor Gray John Hass FOOTBALL The Eau Claire Beavers finished the 1962 football season with only two wins. But the Beavers were hit hard by the injury jinx; the team was never at full strength. But they fought to the end, never giv- ing up. The Beavers were led in scoring by Leo Savich's thirty points. Virg Bradford and Victor Gray had twelve points each. The Eau Claire Annual Staff would like to congratulate the sixteen graduating Seniors and the coaches for the wonderful drive and spirit they showed all year. President; Pete Dejanovich, Vice-President; Virgil Bradford, Treasurer; Ralph Nimtz. Secretary; Connie Wanbaugh, Lynn Schadt, Student Council Representatives. Wkal J, A Senior is a person of mixed emotions. He wistfully looks backwards, hopefully looks forward, and wishes he could stay in the present. Suddenly he realizes that he only has one short year in which to squeeze so many things. During the swiftly moving months he is swallowed in the rush of grades, caps and gowns, Cla?S colors’ magazine sales, announcements and a million-and-one other things. As to those multitudinous college and job applications—is there never an end to them? It's great to be a Senior! He is the pride and despair of all who know him. He enjoys the prestige of having finally arrived at the top. the respect of the underclassmen and the privileges that come his way because of his seniority! But those responsibilities that dog his footsteps! Why must they plague the Senior And then the wonderful night of graduation comes. The dreams of the future are so close that the Sen- a f1!?0?1 reach °ut and touch them- Why then that strange lump in his throat? Ah. don't you see? After tonight he will no longer be able to call himself a Senior. All the wonderful experiences will be but pleasant, warm, and very vivid memories of the past. Years from now, you will only be known by your picture on the wall of the school hallway, but you will carry forever the memories, hopes, and dreams of your Senior days. Take those wistful backward glances, but go on. Senior, strive for the future! 40 JOSEPH GEORGE ADAMS I may be nuts, but I have a lot of fun.” Football 2.3; Prom Com- mittee 3. Ah, the last rung of the high school ladder before the very top! With a little pride, the Junior views the past two years and heaves a sight of relief. Next year he will be at the top. Just imagine, he made it through those two years. They weren’t so tough after all--------- -------or were they? But here is a fun loving, hard working Junior—when he wants to be! Well, you are only a Junior once; so dive in and enjoy it. He has the respect of the many underclassmen but is free from Senior responsibilities. What a life! He fills his hours with the ’’sweet” pleasure of selling candy—cans and cans and more cans. The prom and class play keep him occupied till all hours, and then there is always the inevitable joy of studying U.S. History, or selling refreshments at the games. The days whizz by and suddenly the Junior becomes a Senior: so. Junior, enjoy your freedom, carry your responsibilities, while you have the time. And don’t forget to pass your U.S, History exams! A Sophomore is also known as the highest of the lowly. He is caught in the pinch with Freshmen on the bottom and Juniors and Seniors on the top. The Sophomore is at the stage of note writing. Instead of collecting homework, the teacher collects secret notes. They have parties and try to stay out late. They dislike 8:35 in the morning, general science tests, and anything else that pertains to thinking. The Sophomore feels that it is high time they were noticed, so they get an A on their report card, and put a snake under the bleachers during a basketball game. A Sophomore makes friends easily; also enemies. This year is the time when they REALLY get to know the teachers; this is the year the teachers REALLY want to quit! But way deep down inside a Sophomore is thinking to himself, Gee, next year I'll be a Junior—Gosh! I have only two years left and then—Boy! I'd better start planning my career!” President Vice President Treasurer Mary Brookins Carl Starner Helen Guenther Secretary Patsy Hauch Jim Allen Alice Bailey Diane Bailey Sue Benson Gary Blaylock Lillian Brooks Clara Broaman Sharon Buck Ira Cohen Kathy Colpltts Jon Cook Cheryl Doolen John Edwards Stephen Edwards Connie Flory Joe Flory Jacqueline Fralzer Nancy Freehllng John Froehlich Michael George Kathy Glllem Alice Gratzle Brenda Gray Faith Hardman Allen Hartwig Donna Haskins Jim Hawks Patricia Heaton Harold Hlrsch Susan Hurrle Galen Johnson Linda Jones William Juroff Robert Karchunas Robert Keene Irma King Joe King Michael King Richard Knapp Richard Marks Karen Martinlc Connie McCarthy Mike McLeod Arvada Merrill John Meyer Allen Molter Kay Moore Paul Moore Judy Nodruff Sharon Page Marilyn Pascoe Patricia Potter David Price Neta Price Sam Rapp James Rodell Jo Ann Romeo Nancy Sanders Jenny Lee Sapp Victor Savich Charles Sells William Sharpe Linda Skibbe Ellen Street Dan Strine Roger Swisher Shirley Trail Jeff Vladic Nancy Wagner Diana Wanbaugh Rosemary Watson Mike Wesner Kenneth Wheeler Cheryl Williams Fred Wilson Gaye Wilson S8 Barbara Tillman Dixie Kellogg Paul Sharpe Terry Hartlerode Secretary Vice-President President Treasurer WUJ, J Freshmen come in widely assorted shapes and sizes, but according to the upperclassmen, there is only one color—green! They are found in various places, and usually, the wrong places. First hour they are still wandering in the halls. They are the ones that look forgotten and lost- like a bad apple in the apple barrel, or the one black sheep in a flock of white sheep. They try to do good, but it turns out wrong. They are proud that they are finally a part of high school. They like 11:45, 3:30 and study hour. They dislike 8:35 A. M„ longer dinner lines, initiation, upperclassmen who think they know it all, and the inevitable 20th mistake in a one minute typing practice. TO THE CLASS OF 1963 Today more than at any time in our history, the future of our Nation, and our way of life depends upon you, the youth of our country, and upon the decisions you will soon be called upon to make. Consider if you will the following— The average age of the world's great civilizations has been 200 years. These nations progressed thru this sequence: From Bondage to Spiritual Faith From Spiritual Faith to Great Courage From Courage to Liberty From Liberty to Abundance From Abundance to Selfishness From Selfishness to Complacency From Complacency to Apathy From Apathy to Dependency (on a central government) From Dependency back again into Bondage In thirteen years, the United States will be 200 years old. It is our sincere wish that each of you achieve success and happiness in your chosen field of endeavor; that with Divine Guidance the con- tribution you make to society will help to preserve our Nation, and our way of life.
