FIIR 1« II IIII The Senior Class of 1956 is publishing this annual to commemorate our final years in Eau Claire High. The four years we have spent here have been both pleasant and profitable, and we shall never forget them. The purpose of this annual is to keep alive the memories of these happy times and of the friends of our high school days. It is our wish that all will enjoy this year's BEAVER TALES. If they do, the staff will feel well repaid for all their work. The Editors a We, the class of ’56, take great pleasure in dedicating this edition of the BEAVER TALES to a man who has helped so much, to make our high shcool years at Eau Claire very profitable. He is one man we can turn to for advice and whom we consider a great asset to Eau Claire High School. We know that he will always lead future graduates to success--with a smile. Thus, with our deepest sincerity, we proud- ly dedicate the 1956 BEAVER TALES to MR. Robert C. Rhinard. Editor............ Assistant Editor Advertising Sales Art Editors . . Siipmiili'iiM’s A technological civilization such as ours needs more intelligent better educated leaders everywhere. It is the responsi- bility of our schools to provide the facilities and staff to develop the potential capabil- ities of our young people to as great a de- gree as possible in order that they may live intelligently in this atomic age. To the students, teachers and community, I would like to express my sincere appreciation for the fine job they have done in helping to make Eau Claire High School an educational institution we are proud of. Our academic program has developed in scope and efficiency as we have grown in the number of students who are attending our school. Our extra curricular program is one of the best and has an important part to take in the development of character in our young people. Basic to a strong future are the high schools and colleges of our country. As in the past, we have needed young people of intelligence, daring, ingenuity, and courage. In the future we will need young people of like calibre. Eau Claire High School will have a partin that future. She has produced many successful men and women now engaged in all forms of progressive and constructive work. Our boys and girls have gone from this high school into the highways and byways of life and have left behind them a way which others can follow with confidence and courage. As we look into the future we can see a continuous growth and development of the Eau Claire school system and leadership that will give the students the best there is to have. Our second year as a Class “C” High School has seen improvements all along the way. Bigger enrollments have meant new classes, more faculty members, more clubs, and over-flow in some sections. We saw our new athletic field take several steps nearer realization and many more contests won as well as more fine athletes in the making. It is reasonable to believe that as the physical body changes from childhood through adolescence, youth, to young adults, that each should develop a full rounded personality at the same time. We should not forget that as we are living in a most “incredible age,” we will need greater mental ability and capacity to enjoy our part in the bright new era that is just ahead. Thus, we are interested in developing our classes so as to best serve those who look to us for their higher education. GLENN ARTER JR. Algebra, Geometry Gen. THANKS FOR THE MEMORY (To the tune of ) Thanks for the memory. The day that we all started school. We didn’t know how to even play pool. But you taught us not to be a fool. Oh, thank you so much. Thanks for the memory. We went through grade school very fast. And junior high didn’t seem to last. But now high school is in the past. Oh, thank you so much. Thanks for the memory. Of that day that we were very late. And of the time that we forgot to bait. But we didn’t get far in that old crate. Oh, thank you very much. Thanks for the memory. The day that each boy wore his vest, Because he wanted to look his best. But each still flunked his history test. Oh, thank you so much. Thanks for the memory. The night we had a dance in the gym. Our chances for a date were very slim. Which left us out on a very long limb. Oh, thank you very much. Thanks for the memory. But now it’s time to say so long. For I think I hear the strike of gong. And that means it’s the end of the song. Oh, thank you so much. THE LONG ROAD AHEAD We've done a lot of traveling since we started school. It wasn’t a very fast pace, more like that of a mule. It seems like it’s been a long time; but I think instead. That there’s still a long, long road ahead. It’ll still be sad to say good-by to each and every friend. Maybe just so long, because it’s really not the end. Yes, we’re sorry we have to leave the old homestead. But we’ve got to get started on that long road ahead. We’re like a group of substitutes, going into the game. If we play it fair and square, we’ll come out with fame. But before we start the game, we've got to use our head. And realize that there’s a long, long road ahead. We’ve had a lot of fun with our pals and faculty. And when we leave, it’ll be a cherished memory. We hope we are still ready, for we’re the ones who said. That there’s a very, very long road ahead. Joanne has always lived in the Eau Claire area so therefore she attended the Eau Claire School from kindergarten through twelfth grade with the exception of her seventh and eighth grades which were spent at Grace Lutheran School. In high school her academic work consisted of majors in English, commercial, home economics and social studies; and minors in typing and science. Her extra curricular activities included one year of band, three years of chorus, two of which she served as secretary, class treasurer all four years, three years of F. H. A. serving as reporter her Sophomore year, vice- president of the Student Council in her Junior year, one year as secretary of the Commercial Club, one year as a cheerleader, and one year as a member of the Eager Beaver Staff. She also was included in the cast of the Junior Play and was a member of the Annual Staff her Senior year. The presentation of her Valedictorian address at com- mencement will close Joanne’s high school activities. Joanne’s future plans are to be either a secretary or an elementary teacher. Harold Korelich, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Karn Jr., was born in Los Angeles, California, on July 13, 1938. He was nicknamed Dee. Dee lived in San Pedro, California, for the first eleven years of his life. He went to the 15th Street School through half of the sixth grade and then moved with his parents to Eau Claire and finished his schooling. Through the four years of high school. Dee major- ed in English, shop, mathematics, and social studies; and minored in Spanish. His extra curricular activities included one year in the F. F. A., president of the Sophomore class, president of the Student Council in his Senior year, one year of football and baseball, three years of junior varsity basketball, and one year of varsity basketball. He was one of the art editors of the Eager Beaver for two years, a member of both the Junior and Senior play casts, and a member of the Annual Staff in his Senior year. The presentation of his Salutatorian address at com- mencement will close Harold’s high school activities. Harold’s future plans are to enter the entertainment field, either in animated cartooning, or as a comedian. Be- fore such fame, he says he will probably go to college. I don’t ask for any place in the lineup; play me where you need me. I only ask for the stuff to give you a hundred per cent of what I’ve got. If all the hard drives come my way I thank You for the compliment. Help me to remember that You won’t let anything come that You and I together can’t handle. And help me to take the bad breaks as a part of the game. Help make me thankful for them. “And, God, help me always to play on the square, no matter what the other players do Help me to come clean. Help me to see that often the best part of the game is helping the other guys. Help me to be a “regular” fellow with the other players. “Finally, God, if fate seems to uppercut me with both hands and I’m laid up on the shelf in sickness or old age, help me to take that as part of the game also. Help me not to whimper or squeal that the game was a frameup or that I had a raw deal. When in the dusk I get the final bell, I ask for no lying, complimentary stones. I’d only like to know that you feel I’ve been a good guy.” BACK ROW, Left to Right: Mr. Rhinard, J, Steverson, B, Rakauski, J. Bailey, D. Hirsch, J. Hauch. FRONT ROW: P. Alexis, G. Dohm, J. They had lost four of the first six starts, but that was to be forgotten as the Beaver team fought its way into a tie for the Big Nine title with Stevensville, New Buffalo, and New Troy. With a four way tie it was voted to have a play off. In the first game, Eau Claire knocked off Stevensville, 8-3. While this was going on. New Troy was shutting out New Buffalo, 5-0. The next day was the play off between the Beavers and the Trojans. It was a sad day for the Eau Claire players and fans as they went down in de- feat, 4-2, in a thrilling championship game. That ended the season for Eau Claire as they won 9 and lost 6, with a 7 and 3 conference record. STANDING: J. Steverson, J. Bailey, D. KNEELING: Mr. Rhinard, P. Alexis, G. Hauch, E. Gustafson, F. The Beavers played a great defensive game but showed little spark of offense. The Beavers took the opener 6-0. A week later New Carlisle traveled to Eau Claire to play the Beavers. The game turned into another great defensive game with Eau Claire proving the best team and winning 6-0. October 7 Eau Claire journeyed to New Buffalo to play their first conference game. I he Beavers outplayed their opponents and had several scoring attempts, only to be stopped by penalties. The game ended and Eau Claire had their first loss of the season 7 - 6. A week later Eau Claire went to Edwardsburg and had only victory in their minds as they rolled over the Eddies 19-6. That was the first time this year Eau Claire’s offense moved. October 22 New Troy came to Eau Claire to play the Beavers. The teams seemed evenly matched but New Troy got a few extra breaks as Eau Claire fumbled twice deep in their own territory, with New Troy taking advantage and scoring both times. Eau Claire was dealt their second loss of the season 14-6. November 2 Eau Claire played their last game of the season against a victory minded Galien team. The Gales took command fast as they pulled out in front 14-0 in the first quarter. Then the Beaver defense dug in and stopped the Gales. Just before the first half ended Eau Claire scored their first touchdown to make the score 12-7. As the second half started the Beavers took full command as they picked up a safety and a touchdown to go on to win a thriller, 15-14, and show everyone they could come from behind and win. The beavers ended the season with a 2 and 2 record in the conference good for 3rd place and a 4 and 2 record for the season. STANDING, Left to Right: H. Korelich, Grant, J. Hill, P. Alexis. KNEELING: VanderGeest; J. Hauch, B. Rakauski. D. Baiers, G. Mitchell, D. Hirsch, F. J. Steverson, J. Rosenbaum, Coach, Don The Beavers began their basketball season on November 22, 1955, by playing host to Three Oaks. This game ended in a 59-51 victory for Eau Claire and opened the gate to a road of tough competition and a promising season for our Beavers Eau Claire traveled down this road that headed straight towards a Big Nine championship by defeating Edwardsburg, 60-40; New Buffalo, 80-58; Bridgman, 67-34; and Baroda, 75-60, but met with a nonconference loss to Covert, 46-35. Still determined, and still undefeated in their own conference, Eau Claire met another nonconference competitor, Benton Harbor St. Johns, and handed them a 61-46 loss. While traveling along this road, Eau Claire had a running mate by the name of New Troy. On January 10, 1956, they met the Trojans on Eau Claire’s court and happily handed them a close 48-46 loss, putting the Beavers in the driver’s seat” in the Big Nine. Next the Beavers met the Galien Gaels and defeated them 57-48. On January 17, the Beavers met Stevensville and were dealt their first con- ference loss of the season, 54-51. This game ended one round of Big Nine com- petition. The Beavers started their second round by again defeating Three Oaks, 71-58, but ran into trouble with the Eddies and received their second conference loss, 60- 56. And again, they met New Buffalo, Bridgman, and Baroda, and defeated them by scores of 61-58, 75-58, and 81-40, respectively. At the time of this publication, the Beavers still have three conference games to go; New Troy, Galien, and Stevensville, and with their power and determination, along with student backing, the Beavers will come out in front. But, win or lose they’re still our champs.” And it’s fine to be counted a star. But the single deed with its touch of thrill Doesn’t tell us the man you are; For there’s no lone hand in the game we play. We must work to a bigger scheme, And the thing that counts in the world today Is how do you pull with the team ? They may sound your praise and may call you great They may single you out for fame. But you must work with your running mate Or never you’ll win the game. For never the work of life is done By the man with a selfish dream. For the battle is lost or the battle is won By the spirit of the team. It is all very well to fight for fame But the cause is a bigger need. And what you do for the good of the game Counts more than the flash of speed. It’s the long, long haul and the dreary grind Where the stars but faintly gleam. And it’s leaving all thought of self behind That fashions a winning team. You may think it fine to be praised for skill. But a greater thing to do Is to set your mind and set your will On the goal that’s just in view; It’s helping your fellow man to score When his chances hopeless seem. It’s forgetting self till the game is o’er And fighting for the team. Charlotte Sanders Shirley Latislaw Beverly Beilman Judy Butzbach BACK ROW: B. Rakauski, D. Schlipp, A. Clark, C. Marquis, D.
