foreword We sincerely hope that this book will serve as a reminder of the past activities, friends, and the faculty we have had during the school year. As you read these pages, we hope you will enjoy them as much as we have enjoyed bringing them to you. We have tried our best to bring you a book that you will want to keep and enjoy in the years to come. Now let us turn to the pleasures of seeing our friends, faculty and our activities as we read our 1955 BEAVFR TALES. Morningstar We, the Seniors of 1955, wish to dedicate our Annual, to Superintendent Orra C. Morningstar, who was our friend, companion, and helper for our four years in Eau Claire High School, During these years he has never been too busy, with his many school duties, to listen to our oroblems and give his words of kindly guidance. We feel it an honor to have been in Mr. Morningstar's school when it made such strides to the front. As each of us reluctantly go our several ways we see bright vistas ahead for scholastic achieve . ier.t, for musical end vocational advancement, and for our Beavers where ever they may be competing. We have grown up, so we can take our place with the other out- standing schools In the field of academic subjects and extra cur- ricular activities. We are proud of our Band and their new uni- forms, the wonderful success of our athletic teams. This out- standing growth, could not have been accomplished without the loyal support and co-operation of the students, teachers, and parents. To the Seniors who entered high school when we started our building program, I want to ex- press my deepest appreciation for tne fine job you have done, your loyality, school spirit, and ability to get things done, will long be remembered. ORRA C. MORNINOSTAR principal's Message I have been interested in Eau Claire ever since the Lansburgs lived across from the school building. My personal interests in fruits, grains, and vegetables have found their best developmertt in the activities of the F.F.A., F.H.A., I4.H Clubs, Boy Scouts, and the Junior Vegetable Growers. With this background I am Inter- ested in developing the very best possible rural High School In Southwestern Michigan. One which will best serve the athletic, scholastic, musical, and vocation- al interest of boys and girls of the communities. It Is my hope in the coming months to meet more and more of those who have like interests. GLPNN COWLFS Glenn Arter Jr. Hans M. Auction of Prt '5 Crowning of Sueoo Penny Pitching M Ask The Professor The mixed chorus, consisting of seventy members, is open to all high school students having the desire to sing. The first public performance of the new school year was December 16 when the chorus sang several selections for the P.T.A. at the annual Christ- mas program. Many long hours of rehearsing prepared the group for its first two act operetta presented for the public February 10. The setting of the operetta. Ask the Professor, was the campus of a girls' college and featured solos and duets with a singing chorus and several special dances. The cast included: Myrth Bber, Joan Molter, Joyce Coon, Judy Butzbach, Toni Williams, Sandra Wakefield, Shirley Latislaw, Maureen Partridge, Don Balers, Fred Grant, Jerry Hill, and Jim Rosenbaum. Following the operetta, intense practise was necessary to prepare the chorus for the vocal portion of the Second Annual Spring Concert held in the high school March 31. The remaining weeks of the school year found the chorus continually rehearsing for public performances. The entire group participated in the Berrien County Vocal Festival held in Buchanan April 20, singing two memor- ized numbers alone for adjudication and joining the massed chorus for the afternoon rehearsal and evening performance. The chorus presented programs for both the Schubert Club and the Study Club of Eau Claire in April. Special music for Baccalaureate and Commencement closed the year's activities for the chorus. Special recognition should be made of our two accompanists, Darlene Weber and Joanne Froehlich, whose loyalty and sincere interest in their responsibilities made possible their fine performances. Barbara Hokanson Ruth Ober The fall of 195U saw the Eeu Claire High School Band eager to begin its second year of activities with an initial enrollment of thirty one instrument- alists. A new sousaDhone, French horn, and several percussion Instruments were added to our equipment. The Group's activities began early in the fall when a large portion of our band members traveled to the football games in all kinds of weather of furnish pep tunes. Our winter appearances were primarily basketball games where the Pep Band furnished music and pep yells at all home games and pep meetings. The second semester ushered in five new members bringing the total member- ship to thirty-six. The month of January found the band making its second radio broadcast when we again took part in the school program sponsored by WHFB. Special recognition should be made of the individuals of the band who, for the first time, represented Eau Claire in the S.W.K.B.O.A. Solo and Ensemble festival held in Kalamazoo January 29. The cornet trio, consisting of Floyd Wheeler, Stanley Schlipp, and Sandra Beringson, earned a I division rating for their performance and Glenda LaVanway, a 71, for her saxophone solo. Other students taking part in this contest were Marilyn Nothdurf.t, Judy Butzbach, Charletc Forrester, David Krieger, Ruth Ober, and Ruth Kesterke. Another first for the band was its participation in the S.W.M.B.O.A. Band and Orchestra festival, February 25. We performed in Constantine under Class C qualifications receiving a IV division rating plus much valuable ex- perience and heloful criticisms. We were extremely proud at this time to be wearing our new uniforms realized through the efforts of the newly organized Band Boosters Club. The year's activities closed with the Second Annual Spring Concert, March 31 which programed the instrumental and vocal deoartments, the band playing varied selections to meet all musical tastes of concert goers. Recognition should go to the cornet trio, Glenda LaVanway, Ruth Kesterke, Ruth Ober Carole Kaiser, Nancy Laberdy, and Shirley Balers who represented the instrumental department with special music for various school events. Also special mention should be made of the four graduating members of the band whose enthusiasm ard loyalty will long be remembered. Tney are: Gis Gustaf- son, Patsy Kalinas, i-rua Krieger, and Glenda aVanway. Officers elected for the year were: President, Glenda LaVanway; oecretsry, Allana Murphy; Publicity, Patsy Kalinas ard Sandra Beringson; Librarians, Shir- ley Balers and Marilyn Nothdurft. AFTER THE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME AT GALIEN football Eau Claire 28 - Buchanan 0 On September 18, the Eau Claire football team opened their second sea- son of competition against the Buchanan Reserves on the Buck field, as the fl!ldwWaS 3ti11 ln the Planning stages. The Beavers went wh® b?! forward wall out-playing their opponents so Nichols, Dohm and Mitchell could do their tricks ln the backfield. lth the speed shown by these boys it looked like a big year ahead for the D98V0 PS Eau Claire 39 - Lawton 0 On Friday, September 21+, the Beavers faced the Lawton Bluedevils for their second game of the year. John Bailey booted a long kick to the Blue- devils 10 yard line where they picked it up and returned it to the 15, mak- ing first down and 10 to go. After three attempts, the Bluedevils were forced to punt. The Beavers blocked the punt and after three trys through the middle were unseccessful, Mitchell gave the ball to Don Nichols, who went around end for the first touchdown and the Beavers led 6 to 0. At this point it becsme clear that the Eluedevils were no match for the Beavers and Coach Rhinard started a second search for hidden talent among his many re- serves, the half ending 21+ to 0« In the second half the Beavers came back strong and made a number of first downs before Nichols ran around left end for another touchdown making the score now, 32 to 0. Then the game was evenly played, until Jerry Hauch passed to Bob Rakauski for another touch- down, making the final score, 39 to 0. Eau Claire 31+ - New Buffalo 0 After an ooen date the Beavers traveled to New Euffalo on October 6, for a game with the Bisons. The Beavers kicked to the Blaons who tried three ploys and punted. Mlthcell grabbed the ball and scampered 75 yards for the first touchdown of the evening. There was no scoring during the 2nd period but later Mitchell broke away for 55 and 35 yard runs. Also Jerry Hauch drove across for a fourth touchdown making the score 27 to 0 . Mlthcell also scored on a 55 yard run. Mitchell was the star on offense ard Bailey did an outstanding job on defense, blocking, and tackling. The score was 3L to 0 as the game ended. And the Beavers were happy once again. EAU CLAIRE 20 - ECWARDS BURG 19 Eau Claire's fourth big game was at Edwardsburg on October 15th and it was a thriller from the start. The opening kick off went to the Eddie's. They made two first downs before the Beaver line tightened and they were forced to punt. Dohm got the ball and returned it to the Beaver 35 yard line. The first play was up the middle for a five yard gain. Then Nichols went around end for 35 yards, next Mitchell took the ball around the other end for the touchdown, making the score 7 to 0. The Beavers kicked off to the Eddie's and they fought 52 yards to a touchdown picking up five first downs on the way, Gerry Toth finally scoring from the 2. The extra point was kicked and the score stood 7 to 7. Then the Eddie's went to work and played real ball getting a touchdown in both 1st and 2nd quarters, the half ended 7 to 13 in their favor. One of these touchdowns resulted from a loose ball rolling dead and ruled by the referees as belonging to the Ed- dies. The Eddie's rushed across a third score shortly after half time mak- ing it 19 to 7. The Beavers came back strong with a 65 yard drive and a score by Mitchell. After many penalities against the Eddie's, Mitchell got the ball on his own 25 yard line and out ran all pursuers for 75 yards and the third touchdown making the score 20 to 19. As the gamed ended the Eddie's were desperately trying to score. A pass was caught beyond the goal line but was ruled out of bounds. On the next play George Dohm in- tercepted and ran it out to the 10 yard line, as the game ended with Eau Claire ahead by one small point. EAU CLAIRE 26 - NEW TROY 0 On Friday, October 22, the football team and some one hundred and twen- ty five students traveled to New Troy for an afternoon game. The game start- ed with New Troy kicking off to us, the ball went to the 15 yard line, where Mitchell picked it up and with some good blocking went 85 yards for the first touchdown. The try for the extra point was no good, iau Olaire then kicked off to New Troy. The Trojans tried but couldn't get anywnere so they were forced to punt. After a few short gains, Nichols carried the ball around end on reverse for a 75 yard touchdown. The point after the touchdonn again was no good. The Beavers kicked off to the Trojans after a lew completed passes moved to the 26 yard line but lost the ball on downs. Before the final whistle blew Mitchell had scored twice more to make the score 26 to 0. EAU CLAIRE 35 - MARCELLUS 0 On October 29, the Beavers traveled to Marcellus to play the champions of the Al-Van conference. The Beavers got off to a good start with a long kick by John Bailey, the ball went into the end j-one for a touchback, and Marcellus put the ball in play on the 20 yard line. The Beavers stopped them after eight yards and they were forced to punt. Then the Beavers went all the way for a touchdown with Mitchell carrying the ball. The boys from Marcellus gave such strict attention to Dohm, Mitchell, and Nichols, that the time was ripe to spring a new face in the line up. This was accomplish- ed when Dale Zimmerle was left open to catch two touchdown passes. When the cold, snow, and mud, finally cleared away our Beavers had marked up anothe' victory over a worthy opponent to the score of 35 to 0. EAU CLAIRE 21 - GALIEN 0 On November 5, the Eau Claire Beavers went to Galien for the last big game of the year. And in spite of the mud, it was a thriller from beginning to end. The Beavers kicked off to the Gaels in the first quarter, and the Gaels returned the ball to the 25 yard line where it was first down and ten tn o, The Gaels picked up a first down and attempted another but were stop- ped, and forced to punt. It was a short punt coming down on the I4.O yard line. Here the beavers took over, the entire first half was played ii. Gaels territory. However we were unable to score. At half time the score was 0-0. In the second half, the Beavers moved on down the field for their first touchdown and the score was 7 to 0, with Mitchell scoring the touch- down and Dohm adding the extra point. Early in the fourth quarter Mitchell broke around his right end, shaking loose from several tacklers and went all the way for his twentieth touchdown and a big 9 record. With 3 minutes left Georcre Dohm broke off his own right tackle and with the entire Galien team chasing him romped 77 yards to give the Beavers a '1-0 edge and a BIG NINE CHAMPIONSHIP. erry MitchelL j Proud Coaches Ron Guertel Don «tjichola Mr. Kennedy Mr. Khinard Andy Robinson Football Cheerleaders Patsy Kalinas, Ella Jarvis, Myrna Mitchell, absent; Shirley Rodell, Carol Latislaw.
