Taking the temperatures, giving the pills To remedy rnankinds numerous ills. Feeding the babies, answering the bells, Being polite with a heart that rebels. Longing for home, and all the while Wearing the same old professional smile. Blessing the newborn baby's First breath, Closing the eyes that are stilled in death. Taking the blame for all mistakes, Oh dear! what a lot of patience it takes. Going off duty at seven o'clock, Tired, discouraged and ready to drop, But called out to help at seven-fifteen With woe in the heart that cannot be seen. Morning and evening, noon and night. lust doing it over, hoping its right. X-Vhen we report off to cross the bar, Dear Lord will you give us just one little star. To wear on the cap of our unilorni, In the ward above, where the head nurse is you. Twenty-sezfcn 5 .ss S Class History A clay we will always remember - Thursday, August 30, 1951-our First day here. Thirty-one of us all wondering what our new life would be like. NVQ were taken to our rooms, il that's what you'd call them. Every time we turned around we'd bump into a wall. Xfllonder who the mathematician was who planned the layout. Then began weeks ol study - Anatomy, Chemistry, Nursing Arts, Psychology, and Drugs and Solutions. No hn- man being can possibly remema ber all they're trying to teach us. Bones - how could one body hold so many? - unless Heinrich was thought up just to make life miserable for stu' H dent nurses. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy- so!!! Tzucnly-ezfglzt .MA At last came the day we were all secretly dreading - our first day on duty. Those patients should be clean fly considering how long it took us to give those bedbaths. On February 17, 1952 the VValdorf was dedicated and the next day we moved in clothes and coat hangers, with the houseniothers lending a helping hand. VVe certainly made ourselves at home. It is said all things come to hin1 who waits, and so came our capping night, March 2, 1952. TZU6!1,f3l-71 inc It was our turn to enjoy the benefits of special departments: D. Your wisdom, Lord, I wouldn't question But let me offer this suggestion: To make the world a better place, Why not create a newer race? One that will be, oh Lord, quite free Of germs and bacteriologyg To whom a hospital will be A bit of ancient history. Make these ultra-moderns, please, Ixnpervious to all disease And their stomachs of such stuff That nothing will be strong enough To do much damage, I suggest Steel, or copper 1nay be bestg Make their hearts and lungs so strong That nothing ever can go wrong, And their heads so tough, oh Lord, They can't be broken with a board, Then, of course, you'll have to make Arms and legs that will not break. And make . . . but what would I do then? Oh, leave it as it is.--Amen. DELUSIONS and ILLUSIONS Joyce Barsony-The first visiting nurse in Alpha. Lois Brown-Dr. Cavallaro's scrub nurse.
