McDormand has en- couraged us by his faith in our undertak- ing. His sincere efforts have raised East- ern to new heights of endeavor while main- taining the Christian ideals on which our school was founded. We shall remember him for his untiring zeal to strive upward and onward. 6tIt is to this modern worldefraught with monstrous perils for the soul of men-that our educational institutions must carry out their mission . . . The authority of the laws of God must be affirmed with great courage and with compelling clarity. . i. . iiTo our world, educational institutions committed to a Christian view of ilife and death and the vast forever, have a mission of strategic and desperately timely importance. . . . itEducation and Democracy are inseparable; and education undergirded by Christian faith provides the only resources from which democracy can draw strength for survival and advance? PENNSYLVANIA Dear Seniors: In my short time here I've come to appreciate the students of Eastern very much. At your age, enthusiasm characterizes most of your activity. The apathy which is apparent everywhere you will go is infectious. It creeps into one's life and stunts growth in every area. The root of this problem is ethical and present in each of us. Only the quickening of the Holy Spirit gives power over this condition. It is the purpose of Eastern to provide an environment which stimulates your Spiritual growth as well as your intellectual growth. This is the uniqueness of Eastern, Christ in you the hope of glory. What an infinite source of power over sin and discouragement! As far as you have integrated the truths of the Christian faith into every aspect of your life, so far will you resist the infection of materialism or sentimentalism or meaninglessness in your daily life. Only as you bring each day and each talent unto God will you truly keep them and enjoy them. God moreover has commanded that we fill the earth and subdue the world for His glory. May our great God supply you with wisdom and power by His Holy Spirit that you may bring glory to His name and enjoy life overabundantly in Him. Sincerely in Christ, MWa-W Charles A. Shakespeare Class of 1965 e Juniors By selecting a major area of study, the members of the Junior Class began to buckle down seriously to their hooks as the prospect for their future became an exciting and sometimes frightenlng realizatlon. With David Henderson sewing as captain of the basketball team and with Oscars Rieksts nominated to Whok Who, the Juniors provided capable leaders in the athletic and scholastic realms. During the fall, the Juniors enjoyed a very lively and enjoyable hootenanny party. The class also sponsored the collec- tion of good-will baskets for Thanksgiving. Possessing a keenly competitive spirit the class formed an active and alert Senior sneak committee. After chasing the Seniors and gaining a sneak preview of their hideaway, the Juniors started to plan and anticipate their getaway next year. With a record of participation in campus activities and a continuous development of mental and spiri- tual growth, the Juniors look forward to one more year of contribution and achievement at Eastern and to many challenging years of sewice thereafter. 1 W n'- -0 t Class of 1966 e Sophomores Dubbed as upperclassmen now, the Sophomores gained a confident and renewed spirit as many of the members assumed positions of responsibility in the activities of Eastern,s campus life. In an effort to retaliate-against the experiences of their F reshman week, the Sophomores planned a rig- orous set of rules for the incoming novices. After one of the basketball games, the class held a pizza party which brought a good response. Another important event on their schedule was a meaningful visit to an orphanage in Philadelphia. During this year, goals and beliefs were analyzed and molded. Through academic probings, spiritual evaluations, and social engagements, the members of the class of ,66 underwent a process of maturation. Class of 1967 In early September, a new Freshman Class entered Eastern, full of excitement and dreams. Orientation Week, with its flurry of tests, parties, and new roommates, acquainted the members with Easternis spirit of fellowship. Although the experience of scurry- ing for class cards and then of receiving their professorsi detailed and incredible syllabi on the first day of classes was overwhelm- ing, the Freshmen readily adjusted to their role as college .9145A4 nasai Ex students. x: F reshmen Freshman Week was an unforgettable experience but one which revealed the characteristics of cooperation and ingenuity within the class. Other activities included an introduction to Rush Week and a successful class party. This year of beginnings gave the Class of ,67 many fond remembrances and stimulated great ex- pectations. ! 5 i 2 i 9 t Q t g -W - wring ... to.- th-r-V!wuv-m ..- -, NN$QOQW a t i 0 n 5 As many men, 30 many minds; every one his own way. A climax of their schedule was the annual tour which was conducted in the Pittsburgh area. A coveted experience of this tour was the privilege of singing daily in the local high schools. Endeavoring to herald and exalt the message of Christ in song, the College Choir plays a unique and important role in the life of the College. A pre- requisite to membership in the Touring Choir is that of the Freshman Choir which serves as a training period for experience and instruction. The oppor- tunities both choirs provide are richly rewarding to the individuals taking part and to those to whom the witness is given. . 4 -w, .r'km'uurw Mr ? 31.91am r:- Jib , A. . wv-c'm. f.- First row: L to Rt-D. My fears within arose For this One is the Fountainhead. I saw God creating. A great white throne of radiance divine Arose from out the east. Before it stood Monarchs and sages, men of lofty kind. My head was bowed in shame, for now I saw God judging. Transfixed between these two, there came to me Another vision. Darkness spread her cloak To hide the awful agony. Indeed My heart was broken, for I had beheld God dying. The fear of might, the shame for-depth of sin Became transmuted by His mighty love; I gazed on Him. Adviser, Dr. Ingles, D. Maring, N. Merritt Whitman and Gosch Ehlers led Eastern to an impressive 14-7 log in 1958. Ron Hogeland and Dave Rowlands helped Eastern to the 14-9 mark in 1961. Rowlands ranked high among area scorers in his two succeeding years. In 1963, Byron directed Eastern to a 13-11 mark in his final season, and a third place finish in the Kings Tournament. Under Byronis able hand Eastern became a member of the N.A.I.A., Delaware Valley Conference and established rivalries with the top small college teams in the area.
