Dedicatory Behavior Of Philip Mclaren Esther Y. Johnson, B.S. Introduction Philip Mclaren, known commonly as Phil or Mac . is found most often in southeastern Massachusetts. Although generally considered a land animal. some investigators assert that this species is aquatic, as it is often found in the water, and can stay completely submerged for overgan hour: one variety has been found with fin-like adaptations of the hind feet. P. mclaren has been observed to migrate south to the Bahama islands every Jan'- uary. and erratic migratory behavior has been reported during the summer months, including travel to Nova Scotia. California, and Belize. The purpose of this paper is to report on the dedicatory behavior of Philip mclaren. l will provide conclusive evidence to show that Philip mclaren belongs in the class of creatures to whom the Nautilus has been dedicated. Materials And Methods l have observed Philip mclaren at regular intervals over a four year period. All necessary precautions were taken not to disturb natural behavior during my study. Observations were recorded in a standard unlined journal. Data were collected from the following field stations: third floor Schrader Hall: 23 Davis Streets aboard the vessel Wings: in a van enroute to Miami: aboard the Shark IX in the Caribbean: Bimimi. Bahamas: Wollaston Church: Wood's Hole Oceanographic Institute. Results My data show that Philip mclaren is a vital link in the educational chain of Eastern Nazarene College. He demonstrates considerable knowledge in his field of biology and geology. both in the classroom and in the field. He has widened the opportunities of students by introducing scuba diving. Tropical Marine Biology travel seminar. other field courses in billogy, and student assistantships on research vessels based at Wood's Hole. He shows concern for the students he advises, and is a friend to anyone who asks. He has been particularly invaluable to the class of l980. whch he has advised since the time he and the class were both new to E.N.C. He has been active in the Wollaston Church, and in sewing as a chapel speaker. Philip mclaren is often seen demonstrating hospitality. a helping hand. and a smiling face. Conclusion For friendship, fellowship. fun, knowledge, generosity of spirit, willingness to work. and kindness of heart. the l98O edition of the Nautilus has been dedicated to Dr. James Philip McLaren. Acknowledgements Many thanks go to the subject of my study, from all of us at E.N.C.: to Mrs. Lynn McLaren. for her support of the subjects and to God. for bringing Philip mclaren to us here at Eastern Nazarene College. From the Department of Biology, Eastern Nazarene College. Quincy. Massachusetts. Manuscript received Febru- ary. l98O. and accepted in final form in March. l980. Nautilus. Volume 58. l980 '
