We owe a great debt to these faithful servants. ENC is concerned with the intellectual. social and spiritual development of the youth of our educational zone. In a real sense. we ha ve a strong academic college with a qualified faculty and capable students. However. opportunities we enjoy are not without cost. We ha ve dedicated people giving the best of their lives and energies to the advancement of ENC. After sixty years, we are still committed to Jesus Christ and the advancement of his kingdom. We are just entering the decade of the '80s. The past is a prologue to the future. We have a good heritage, a loyal constituency, and a valid purpose for the future. During the next ten years, ENC will be challenged in every way possible - in finances. enrollment. social and secular pressures. and still other ways unknown to us. In the '80s we desparately need the qualities of our past leaders -- a sense of mission, vision. faith and dedication. The CHALLENGE OF THE '80s is to Hnd dedicated Christian teachers, administrators, students and supporters who are willing to give their best to the cause of Christian higher education. The responsibility now shifts to you, the graduates of the '80s. ENC needs your resources -- your intellect, devotion, time, service and committment to maintain her spiritual and academic traditions. Will you accept this challenge? . President Donald Irwin 22,5-Y ,nw Z 7 '14s- QM K' 'Q ' E235 M.Div.. Asbury Theological Seminaryf D.D.. Asbury The ological Seminary. Introduction Philip Mclaren, known commonly as Phil or Mac . is found most often in southeastern Massachusetts. Although generally considered a land animal. some investigators assert that this species is aquatic, as it is often found in the water, and can stay completely submerged for overgan hour: one variety has been found with fin-like adaptations of the hind feet. P. mclaren has been observed to migrate south to the Bahama islands every Jan'- uary. and erratic migratory behavior has been reported during the summer months, including travel to Nova Scotia. California, and Belize. The purpose of this paper is to report on the dedicatory behavior of Philip mclaren. l will provide conclusive evidence to show that Philip mclaren belongs in the class of creatures to whom the Nautilus has been dedicated. Materials And Methods l have observed Philip mclaren at regular intervals over a four year period. All necessary precautions were taken not to disturb natural behavior during my study. Observations were recorded in a standard unlined journal. Data were collected from the following field stations: third floor Schrader Hall: 23 Davis Streets aboard the vessel Wings: in a van enroute to Miami: aboard the Shark IX in the Caribbean: Bimimi. Bahamas: Wollaston Church: Wood's Hole Oceanographic Institute. Results My data show that Philip mclaren is a vital link in the educational chain of Eastern Nazarene College. He demonstrates considerable knowledge in his field of biology and geology. both in the classroom and in the field. He has widened the opportunities of students by introducing scuba diving. Tropical Marine Biology travel seminar. other field courses in billogy, and student assistantships on research vessels based at Wood's Hole. He shows concern for the students he advises, and is a friend to anyone who asks. He has been particularly invaluable to the class of l980. whch he has advised since the time he and the class were both new to E.N.C. He has been active in the Wollaston Church, and in sewing as a chapel speaker. Philip mclaren is often seen demonstrating hospitality. a helping hand. and a smiling face. Conclusion For friendship, fellowship. fun, knowledge, generosity of spirit, willingness to work. and kindness of heart. the l98O edition of the Nautilus has been dedicated to Dr. James Philip McLaren. Acknowledgements Many thanks go to the subject of my study, from all of us at E.N.C.: to Mrs. Lynn McLaren. for her support of the subjects and to God. for bringing Philip mclaren to us here at Eastern Nazarene College. There is the world around us . . . - to understand it better - to make better use of it - to live at our best in it. There are the students in our department . . . ., - eager to learn - developing into professional chemists 0 - seeking to bring together their learning and their faith. Each year there are new challenges . . . In these times chemists are working on new energy sources and new materials for construction and for clothing. better ways to maintain our health. The impact of computer technology is wide- spread in chemistry. Chemistry students are learning to program computers to do their calculations. They look forward to having new microcomputers interfaced to chemical instruments to man- age experiments in new ways. Each year we hear from our alumni as they tell us about their current activities. In this way we continue to see how our students are working out the challenge represented in the departmental motto- - Chemistry . . . A Door to Service. Point Loma College: M.A. Kansas University: Boston University. The Department of Biology represents one of the most closely knit fellowships on campus. Biology majors and faculty alike are drawn together in a true spirit of communi- ty through the multi-faceted challenge of the Life Sciences. The rigorous course work in the department along with a sound liberal arts approach to education challenges the mind of both students and professors. We are stimulated to search, question, and stretch our minds as we apply the scientific method to problem solving. The human problems of hunger, energy needs, wise usage of resources all chal- lenge the Biologist to deliver answers that work. Through the many activities of Beta Phi Mu Biological Society our bodies are challenged. The climb up 5,264 foot Mt. Katahdin each fall presents a stiff challenge to the physical condition of even the best climbers. Trips to Plym- outh Plantation, the Bahama Islands. Belize and Guatemala, diving trips, tish fries, the Year-end formal banquet, the used book sale. the Wollaston Beach clean-up all demon- strate the activity with which the Biology community an- swers the challenge to the body. The spirit too is challenged to grow into spiritual maturity. The monthly Bible studies in the homes of faculty member and students points our eyes upward towards our Savior. Through these times of sharing we support each other and still learn more of Him. The successes of our students in Medical School, graduate schools, in research fellowships and in research cruises testify to the foundation laid by the Biology Community in answer to the challenge of Living. Eastern Nazarene College: A.M., Ph.D., Boston University. History with literature and philosophy are basic ele- ments in the liberal arts curriculum. They seek to preserve knowledge of the experience. the thoughts. and the values of mankind. History faculty face the challenge of persuading students that anything which took place before I 945 has any significance for them. History is challenged to demonstrate its utility. Par- ents and students ask. What can one do with histo- ry? Faculty members respond. What will the study of history do for one as a person? History provides perspective which gives greater understanding tu such varied materials as the Bible and the newspaper. The student of history develops skills in reading and interpreting a wide variety of materials. in asking and responding to questions. in organizing and presenting materials in a logical and coherent manner. and in research techniques that have value in such diverse applications as law, business. reporting. government and in many academic disciplines. This has involved a new program curriculum design with some exciting new courses. Students fmaiorsj in social work are being challenged in course-work and in field practicums to prepare to become fully- qualitied professional social workers upon graduation. They are also being challenged to integrate professional practice and their Christian faith. The staff of the program are feeling the challenge to be relevant and creative in providing meaningful learning experiences. They are also finding large stimulation in their professional roles outside the college. Preparing professional social workers who can think. communi- cate. and relate. and who can join these skills to a Christian commitment is both personally and professionally fulfilling. I am convinced that we are doing just that. Wayne Dunlop If . E ., fs 2, - Z Beniamin Mehrling P i Department Of Sociology Charles Robert Gailey. Ph.D.. Professor of Sociology. A.B.. Th.B.. Dinnertime showed the usual with goldfish swallowing. John and Joh- nathan Cramer made the time unique by standing side by side and simultaneously chewing theirs! At the basketball game that night against Nyack College, our 50's band played some old songs that everyone seemed to enjoy, especially Stephanie Rundlett and Diane Padusis. I'd been to King's twice before and I knew how tremendous it was to win. Of course. I Hgured I 'd be covering events like Barbershop. Volleyball, or even Alumni free-throw. But . . . I was asked to write on the general spirit at King's. I'd be less than honest if I said I was really excited about that. I knew as well as anyone. our chances weren 't as good for finishing first this year. Everyone there knew ENC was going to have to Hght for first, not walk away with it. as we have in past years. I wondered how we as fans would handle anything less than the Hrst place finish we 've become so accustomed to. It didn 't take me very long to discover how great ENC fans can be. The Hrst event I attended where I noticed our positive spirit was the ice cream social. The basketball team had just been defeated by Eastern. and our hopes for a sixth straight tournament win were dimmed. somewhat. But. people weren 't giving up. There was talk of going to see bowlers to cheer them on and congratulations to all our ping-pong players for their excellent showing. 'There was support and words of consolation for the basketball team members. And. there were cheers and applause as the barbershop quartet was sent off to another tirst place trophy. It was hard to find pessimism or criticism. and wherever it surfaced. someone was quick to remind you that ENC was still the one to beat and we weren 't done yet. Going to events like bowling. barbershop, jogging and volleyball. I was constantly amazed at the magnitude of fan support ENC can produce. Everywhere. there were screaming. clapping. foot-stomping people wearing Ain 't No Stopping Us Now buttons. Always. there was applause for a job well done. whether you Hnished first or not. and even if you weren 't from ENC. We shared our spirit with Barrington runners. Messiah bowlers. King's quartet. Houghton 's volleyball team and anyone else who put out the best they could for their school. I think we helped contribute to what the spirit of King 's is really supposed to be. 11 'H' 4 w X. 2 5 5 X X x N, I x -u .L .elf 'Q ,-,405 1 f ' I 4 5,32 Hi Nag 'Ang -., , W -'ff had .A 1!lLi5ff:'2 ' ' .,-.-,. .,.. . With everything but the basketball games Hnished, some rapid work on a calculator showed that to win the tournament we had to have Eastern beat Messiah: otherwise. the tournament was Messiah 's by I point. We cheered our Crusaders on to a victory over King 's and celebrated Mark Carr's I000th point. Then, we sat back to await the outcome of the final game. Of course, most ENC 'ers would tind it difficult to just sit through a game so important to us and it didn 't take long before we were yelling for Eastern and their Eagle Rock . With 20 seconds left. it looked like Eastern had won, and some of us were ready to celebrate our sixth victory. But, Messiah hung tough, tied it up and took the game into overtime. Our hopes were wiped away as Messiah pulled away and won the game 8 I -75. Suddenly, we were out of cheers for Eastern. and it was Messiah's turn to scream. We're number I . Believe me, those of you who weren't there, that could have been tough to take. But, something happened that further showed what King's is really all about. The shouts of We're number I faded into Messiah kids singing. - And can it be. that I should gain an interest in my Saviour's love Amazing love. how can it be. that thou. my God. shouldst die for me. Everyone joined in about halfway through and it really didn 't seem to matter anymore that we weren 't number I. Messiah showed us how to win with grace. During the Awards Ceremony, as Dean Young proudly presented trophies, we cheered louder when our participants received their awards. But, this year we cheered for others as they accepted their trophies, just as they had clapped for us. Afterwards. Blessed be the Tie That Binds seemed to really ring true. Looking back over my 2 days at King's I would have to say I was very proud to be from ENC. We handled ourselves well, both in victory and in defeat. We have many individual performances with which we should be proud. All the participants did a fantastic job representing us. Messiah may have won the tournament, but I think in the long run. we won the real victory. x Q E BASKETBALL ssiah - IOO p l 3rd Pl x ' ,ua 4 . qi dwg, 6 ng 5 NN E 'f 4931 J 9 l 5 1 0' 45, 3 lf, ', mx ' ' '4'Ev- jf i-fs Q X S T0 ESU LTS Place 'ws X Ama 61, l 1 - 1- -' X ,Q . .5 f D, Q. y. mv--1 W, ' MENT Messiah College CISI pointsb Nazarene College U80 pointsj The King's Colleg e Clll pointsj vs'- L... 4th Place - Eastern nts? 25 points - I5 o' t :nts points points oilus pomts 8 points 4 points p nn s 8 points ,iii ' 2 'Z ,I 3' ,-fi -'-fif-3 ,, Q-1 z ' I ,' 11 '.Y' ag .4 . 31 ,Q X 'LQ 5 I' sg .L4.?. .,,. 1 ' . The State Tourney MVP Award was presented to Lois Malvesti. All- Tourney honors for the New England Invitational Tourney went to Lois and .lanet Ranstrom. Since tournament selection was based on number of matches and strength of schedule the trend is to play several colleges at one scheduled date. This enabled the Lady Crusaders to successfully compete against a wide range of New England teams. lt was indeed an honor to be among the sixteen teams selected for Eastern Regional play. After seventeen years of coaching. the last nine years at Keene State College QNHJ with a winning percentage of .865. the ENC X-Country program presented a real. personal challenge . . . a dare to instill a winning tradition where true success had yet to fully surface. Indicating a strong interest in a competitive program of distance running and knowing the intent of the group of runners, a challenge was extended in the form of an invitation to compete at the best possible level. The l9'l9 season is now history and the extent to which the chal- lenge was met can be seen in the results: a regular season winning percentage of .773 including I7 wins against 5 losses: an overall record of 33 wins and 7 losses for a winning percentage of .825: w.. Under the excellent leadership of Bill Nichols, student body president, the council became involved in every area of student life. from academics to sports to dining habits. Improvements in the game room. sponsoring a bus to King's Tournament and masterminding an lmperials concert were among the many things this council initiated. The proposing of a Publications and Com- munications Board to regulate student media was one controversial thing undertaken by this council. Among other things. heightened student interest and participation in student council events were a direct result of this proposal. Hopefully the record left by this council will prove a starting point for responsibility in student leadership in the future. ' 5-,X 3. Patricia Garrity Q This year the class of '82 has had a tremendous amount of participation in comparison to their freshman year. The sophomores became a vital key to the success of the freshmen 's orientation week activities. They also sponsored an all school swim party. a UNICEF campaign. candy cane sales. easter egg-a-grams. The numerous other responsibilities that they handled throughout the year fHomecoming Queen 's reception, bloodmobile. My happiness here doesn 't come just from my status or my major. it comes from the unfolding revelation of seeing myself as potential Hnding expression. I find in this community the support of the Christian body that liberates me to overcome fears and become the person I want to be. Joel Ladd To say that life here at ENC can be challenging is somewhat of an understatement. The challenges range from: getting up in the morning for breakfast: to making yourself study for the next day's classes: to gathering the courage to ask that special girl out for a date: the list goes on. But during this, my second year at ENC, I 'm realizing more and more that the real challenge doesn't lie only in the school part of life, but rather in recognizing God's call - and then answering it. And in order for it to be a well-rounded book there has to be many ideas that are coming from different people rather than from one alone. After they have given of their time and thoughts. they need to be recognized. As my Business Manager. Ruth Griffin has done a tremendous job: I could never thank her enoughfor the work she has done! She has taken complete care of the books. complete care of all of the advertising section. and has assisted in a lot of the messy busywork of the office. What can I say, Ruth. but thanks! My Photography Editor and fellow photographer. Dave Slobuszewski, I owe a great amount of appreciation to. He has not hesitated a moment when the time came for an appointment to take a picture, or to get a shot when it only will happen once. To a great friend. Dave. thankyou for giving me your time. To all of those who helped with their ideas. thoughts. arguements. and just for stopping in to say hello - I say thanks. Without your help and support. the book never would have been completed. Thankyou Pam. Tammy, Ann. Andy, Jeff. and Dave and Brenda from the Campus Camera for your help and support. The theme for this year's book is. ChalIenge! We've looked at it. discussed it. worked on it, and now it' is finished. If I ask myself the question that I originally began with. Will it become a chaIlenge? , my answer. no matter when I answer it. will always be. YOU BET! ' Dave Kilpatrick Editor. Nautilus 1 4
