DEAR READER: When we. the staff of the 1970 NAUTILUS. were attempting to select a theme for our annual that would best ex- emplify the life on our campus, we first tried to decide what the purpose of a yearbook should be. We decided that our yearbook should reflect the school year 1969-1970. And so we chose as our basic theme HReflec- tions . But then we thought about the man- ner in which our minds work when we reflect or remember. Actually, we do not remember things. events. or people as unities or wholes, but more as disjointed parts. Therefore, we added to our basic theme of Reflections', the extended idea of Fragments of Mem- ories . The division pages that you see in your 1970 NAUTILUS are our concretion of this theme. JJ X ' Later when we were looking for a cover design, we wanted one that would relate to our theme, Fragments ofMemories . And so we selected the design that you find on the cover. The three arrows, each going in a sep- arate direction, represent fragmented mem- ories and ideas expanding into several areas. But it is only in the center that we find something solid and unchanging, a unity in the cross. As we look back on the past year at E.N.C., fragments of memories and ideas take our minds into several directions. But only in our experience with Christ do we find a center, a point of reference to which we can relate all of our other memories and impres- sions.
