Envisioned with the purpose, In hoc signo vinces, Eastem Nazarene College stands to point us to Via, Veritas, Vita. Although the NAUTILUS is for everyone, it is especially for the senior. Hence, in its motto and in its colors, the NAUTILUS for nineteen hundred and fifty is closely linked with the Class of '50. just as each senior with lcnightly characteristics takes up the banner In hoc signo vinces, so each student in his preparation for knighthood may enter into the spirit of this same crusade. Like the knights of the Twelfth Century, we have the same three ideals . . . devotion to our lady, glorification of self, warfare for the cause of right. We, too, make our vows to uphold these ideals. Our lady is the Lady of Education. Whether kings with sincere loyalty tending the aspirations of our lady, or enfants, pages, squires, and knights receiving her wisdom, we uphold her standards. In each training period our devotion to her has been on trial, and it has proved true. il Tournament jousts of old glorified knightly skillg societies, clubs, social life and sports at E. N. YVarfare, a chief pursuit among medieval knights, was constant and long, a continual readiness to overcome the enemy for the cause of rightg to us comes the challenge to he ever alert, to go forward with undaunted stride. a challenge from the Church of the Nazarene to participate in the Mid-Century Crusade for Souls. Today We stand upon the threshold of a turning century. NVere we to look back, We would see hard-fought battles, hut glorious victories, both as a church and as a college. As We look toward the future. We foresee further conliict, hut stimulated by the triumphs of the past, we take courage. With our eyes on the Cross, We lift high our banner, WW alll hoc signo vincesf, X as -sw ry They are not kings who sit on fhrones, but they who know how to govern EASTERN NAZARENE CGLLEGE WOLLASTON PARK, QUINCV, MASSACHUSETTS Ofnce ofthe President May 8, 1950 Dear iriend of E.'N.C., The B.N.C. story is a thrilling epic of sacrifice and devotion, of vision and fulfillment. From our present vantage point, after fifty years of progress, we can see that the history of the past is replete with toil, and effort, and struggle. As we trace the development of the college from the earliest days as a snall Bible school at the turn of the century, it is also evident that there have been periods of growth and accomplishment and times of g1ori0uSrealiza tion. E.N.C. is a crusade, splendid in its conception, valient in its endeavor, and impressive in its achievement. Its vic- tories have been won under the banner of the cross. E.N.C. is also a spirit, infectious and inpelling. It has flamed in the hearts of the consecrated men and women whose sturdy Christian character is reflected today in the ideals and standards of the college. Nothing more meaningful can be said for E.N.C. than to declare that the spirit which has characterized the institution for half a century is still aliveg and that the crusade which was begun so many years ago is still being carried on with increased vision and aug mented forces. The future presents an unparalleled challenge. We face it with firm confidence that God who has led so unerringly during the past fifty years will, in the days ahead, continue to lead on in victorious conquest. Sincerely yours, M777 Edward S. These are our leaders-the kingly men and women who guide us on our way to the Holy City. Fifty years ago Pentecostal Collegiate Institute was started with a simi- lar group of men and women. It was a small staff. but when the Institute moved to VVollaston and became Eastern Nazarene College, its faculty numbered seven- teen. Of that number four have continued the crusade with E.N.C. in the face of clark and difficult days. Now there are thirty-four men and women who make up E.N.C.'s faculty. But they are more than teachersg they are also spiritual counselors. Many students have found professors willing to talk over problems and to give counsel toward an establishing Christian experience. By their kinglv example, the E.N.C. faculty inspire us to full devotion, to an honorable glorification of skills, and to .1 valiant spirit in crusading for the cause of Christ. x., BERTHA MUNRO A.M. Oc St gzzokb as 'Q- QPHO ORE LIKE THE PAGES of medieval times, we sophomores of 1950 have striven to he worthy of our Lord. that some day we may become true knights. This year we were ever eager to acquire skill in scholastic pursuits. But ive, like pages of the court, found time for play. On Initiation Day we helped the enifzmts-the freshman class-to become adjust- ed. Not quoits, but football, tennis, and ping- pong we played and learned lessons of endur- ance and sportsmanship. Not self-glory but the honor of Cod was the spirit of the sophomores who had charge of the young peopleis service one Sunday evening. Our Monday after-dinner prayer meet- ings were characterized by Spirit-supervision, intense devotion, and excellent attendance. Not fully prepared for mature service, we are yet engaged in training, confident that some day we shall be true knights of the Cross. However, even for us, the year was not all work. WVe had our hours of relaxation-in the Dugout, in the gym, on the athletic field. on our class outing. A noteworthy addition of the year was the new two-room Student Council office. in which the group met to discuss problems. old and new. President Thompson advocated a further extension of student government into campus affairs. The student organi- zation was strengthened by a departmen- talization of activities. Robert lngland headed the religious life activitiesg Floyd john, the several organizationsg WVilliam Wallace. the social lifeg and Marjorie Bradley, the department of student pub- licity. Considerable progress was also made in the establishment of a student broadcasting station on the campus. The traditional fall, Christmas, and spring parties were capably directed by Vice-President Nelda Vidt, who intro- duced ingenious features into these fes- tivities. At the Delta Fountafn of Fortune forty-six students sought their fortunes for a new year. Throughout the year the Deltas showed abundant spirit. In football their motto was, XVe'1'e not rough and we're not tough, but are we determined! In basketball their determination was a threat to the other three societies. After-dinner programs were characterized by musical lmmczrg the spring boat trip was a venture for Delta youth. Piercing Cod-ward, our souls were ted with heavenly manna as we instituted the Friday evening Sigma prayer meetings. Fellowship, fun, and freedom were the essence of our society breakfast and outings. Personal interviews to dis- cover latent talents and abilities of our loyals aided in achievement of success in our programs. Excelsior - ever upwardf' ir:-'aw ZET ZAVEN DOHANIAN President KNICHTS OF OLD usually glorified themselves on the field of battle or in toumaments. But the enfants, pages, squires. and knights of Eastern Nazarene College also take an interest in the glorification of intellectual pursuits. In the depart- mental clubs E.N.C.-ers have an opportunity to promote scholastic ideals and to develop such special interests as literature. languages, philosophy, teaching, and biology. Three Tuesday evenings in each semester, groups of students made their way to their respective meeting places in the Administration Building, Canterbury Hall, and the homes of various professors. The several Christmas parties have become almost traditionalg this year the December meetings highlighted the club year. In addition, there were trips to the Blue Hills for nature lovers, a visit to the state mental institution at Danvers for psychology enthusiasts, plans for an exhibition to illustrate the manu- facture of chemical products for future chemists and medical doctors, and an informative discussion of contemporary music for modern Bachs and Handels, as well as many other interesting activities. Much attention centered around the five Spanish-speaking mem- bers of Las Estrellzls. Praise is due the faculty advisers, as well as the club officers, who helped to make each club a success this year. cgi no f gif HO OR OCIETY Front Row: C. Brown, V. Roberts, E. Smith. C. Oddo. But just as exciting as a thirteenth century tournament were the football, basketball, volley ball, and softball games at E.N.C. this year. And just as medieval knights displayed physical prowess in the tournaments, so we E. C.-ers had an opportunity for glorification of our skills, on the gridiron or at a ping-pong table. In the final game of the football season the Zetas defeated the Sigmas. to emerge champions for the third consecutive year. The Sigma defeat moved them into a second-place tie with the Kappas. Meanwhile, the Sigma girls stole by the Deltas to capture the volley ball crown, as the Zeta and Kappa girls were less successful. Remember the basketball games this year? The Deltas, the success story of the basketball season. rallied to provide exciting competition for the Sigmas and Kappas and even toppled the Zetas in one memorable game. However. the Zetzls took an early lead, for the Kappas and Sigmas lacked the necessary scoring punch. The girls' basketball games on Thursday night were also highly competitive. The Sigmas held the edge most of the time, although the Deltas and Zetas kept the Sigma Sallies on their toes. A highlight of the sports year was the E. X.C. all stars -Cordon College game. which E. N. C. lost 60-56. The Cordon girls defeated the E. N. C. girls, all stars , 33-18. For individual competitors there were tournaments in tennis, ping-pong, and badminton. Softball was the main attraction on Nlay afternoons when spring fever was rampant. S-,Oc Siglzofbfb 15.9 CQ, Front Row: .-X. XYatts. N Yirlt, C. NAYl.oR. 1-mwm Nay 8 , 1950 PNONI Gm'--fr 2-ww Dear Friends: This year, 1950, is a most significant one in the llfe of the people called Nazarenes, of Eastern Nazarene College as a Christian educational institution, and of the Nollas- ton Church of the Nazarene. As a denomination of New Testament Christians, the Church of the Nazarene is engaged in a Mid-Century Crusade for Souls: a crusade designed to carry forward the banner of Chr1st's Kingdom and to accelerate the tempo of our own efforts at soul-winning. We are completely in accord with this movement. l The College this year completes its first half-century of existence. From its beginning it has stood for the Wesleyan doctrine and experience of Christian Perfection: , and never in the past has its concern for this truth been l more earnest than now. l l For the past thirty years the Wollaston Church of the , Nazarene has been ministering to faculty, student body, and l , townspeople alike, but never with a church home of its own. l 3 However, 1950 is an epochal year because of the fact that a l l church building more than adequate for our present needs l N is nearing completion and will soon be dedicated. As a 3 local community of Christians we have every reason to face 1 the future with courage and faith. we pledge to all those 1 l whom we serve the best ministry we are able to render. l In the bonds of Christian love, 2 2ig2gZfiL4A.f Pastor l l l l l l V l THE CHRISTIAN VVAY OF LIFE is a warfare. We enlist for training at E.N.C. and are taught to be strong in thc Lord and in the power of His might. We strive to put on the whole armor that we may be able to stand in all pursuits of life. Our weapons are not carnal, but mighty through Cod. Training is realized through various organized units. Armor adjusting is an advantage offered bv the Evangelistic Association, for knights of the Cross have opportunity to learn while laboring in missions and churches. Qualification for mem- bership-our willingness to serve. Through the Ministerial Association veteran minis- ters offer words of wisdom to those of us who vvill fill the ranks. Missionary societies help us keep the vision and bear up warriors on foreign fields. In the fall and spring vve enlist for an all-out spiritual offensive, a time of casting oft the works of darkness and putting on the armor of light. Chapel speakers boost morale and keep ideals before us. Strength comes to hearts as ive are reminded that all things are ours if we are Christ's. Nor are xve without a song. Choirs give expression to singing hearts in selections from The Mc'.s-.sinlr at Christmas. College quar- tets gather needed finances from patriots at home. This is our objective-to be able to say that we have fought a good fight. Our great Commander has never lost a battle. Thence our cry-Onxvarcl, Christian Soldiers! For many years its members, trustees, and pastors have dreamed of a church building, have developed the building fund. This year we have secn the dream come true. The first unit of the building. a basement church. was completed this spring. But this is fust the beginning. The architects drawing is not yet realized. NVe shall not be satisfied until the beautiful church occupies the corner of our campus, until its steeple towers above the elm trees. L hi' m,'. N l' l p.'4 . . H N' rl ' ' ' N 1 .
