Professor Marguerite Lehr, head of the Mathe- matics Department at Byrn Mawr College, Byrn Mawr, Pennsylvania, presented a series of three lectures at Eastern, March 20 and 21. Lecturing on the topics, Parades, Geometry, and Alien Corn, Through the Complex Nlun- bers to the Quaternion Algebra, and Finite Division Rings are Fields, Miss Lehr offered a stimulating and entertaining approach to pure mathematics for faculty and mathematics students. ATI-IEMATICS The Department of Mathematics is growing rapidly at Eastern. With the emphasis being placed more and more on science and mathe- matics, increasing numbers of students are electing courses in mathe- matics for preparation in the iields of engineering and teaching. Because of the great demand for mathematics teachers, the training of students for this field is of major concern to the department and a sizeable library of teaching materials and aids is available to students in Walter O. Briggs Building, which houses the department. Time to relax is welcomed before digging into that Elements of Calculus book. 27
