Here, the freshmen brush up on composition, literature and speech, so necessary for communication. Here, also, are the advanced classes in writing, literature, speech, interpretation and dramatic arts. One of the main interests of the department is the forensics program. The department directs this extra-curricular activity, which is open to everyone, in the areas of oratory, extemporaneous speaking, discussion, public speaking, debate, and interpretive reading. EMC, with twelve other Michigan colleges, forms the Michigan InterCollegiate Speech League. This league sponsors various tournaments for oratory, discus- sion, and debate. Eastern has won three of these tournaments in the past year and placed first in many individual contests. Active on carn- pus is Pi Kappa Delta, the largest honorary speech society in the United States. E The answer to an educator's dream, Interpre- tive Reading class is full of opportunities for active participation. The students deal with the fundamental problems of oral interpretation, developing poise and ease before an audience, a clear and forceful voice, and flexibility and discrimination in interpreting the thought to others. hai Active participation in committees, panels, and forums develops comprehension of the princi- ples and pratice of discussion and conference.
