Not only is it a tradition, but through its pages it catches the life and spirit of the campus. It portrays many happy occasions and preserves for the future, moments that are fraught with dramatic emotionalism. I salute the 1959 graduating class and wish you well in your individual undertakings. You are well prepared to meet the challenges of life, although the biggest challenge is to keep prepared. We are living in a fast moving world that calls upon the individual for continuous top-flight performance. This can be achieved only through constant study and effort. But no achievement is worthy unless it benefits mankind. Public colleges are supported largely at public expense, because society needs the services of highly educated people to carry out its complicated tasks and provide creative motivation for progress. While the graduates of all colleges owe society much, it is especially incumbent upon the graduate of the public college to fulfill his responsibility to those who have done so much to provide him with an opportunity for education. The service ideal for the college graduate carries rich rewards in terms of lasting satisfactions. WMM , 7 Eastern Michigan College . . . three words with personal and varied memories and meanings to everyone connected with the Campus. Therefore, it is not the purpose of this Aurora to show a complete picture of campus life at Ypsilanti' rather it is intended that the Aurora of 1959 will serve as a window to a vast storeroom of remembrances, each page bringing forth a Remember when ...., so that at some future time and in some other place, memories and faces of EMC will come rushing back to allow each one to relive again his college days. Here, the freshmen brush up on composition, literature and speech, so necessary for communication. Here, also, are the advanced classes in writing, literature, speech, interpretation and dramatic arts. One of the main interests of the department is the forensics program. The department directs this extra-curricular activity, which is open to everyone, in the areas of oratory, extemporaneous speaking, discussion, public speaking, debate, and interpretive reading. EMC, with twelve other Michigan colleges, forms the Michigan InterCollegiate Speech League. This league sponsors various tournaments for oratory, discus- sion, and debate. Eastern has won three of these tournaments in the past year and placed first in many individual contests. Active on carn- pus is Pi Kappa Delta, the largest honorary speech society in the United States. E The answer to an educator's dream, Interpre- tive Reading class is full of opportunities for active participation. The students deal with the fundamental problems of oral interpretation, developing poise and ease before an audience, a clear and forceful voice, and flexibility and discrimination in interpreting the thought to others. hai Active participation in committees, panels, and forums develops comprehension of the princi- ples and pratice of discussion and conference. HI TORY, GEGGRAPHY 84 SGCIAL SCIENCES History of civilization becomes vividly imag- inable, interesting, and often amusing as Mr. Reinhard Wittke, assistant professor of history, lectures before a class in Welch Hall. Today, more than ever before, it is necessary for the citizens of this country to be well-informed concerning political activities and impli- cations, both at home and abroad. Perhaps this is the reason many students elect courses which will give them an understanding and a background of the events which shape the world. The Departments of Geography, History, and Social Sciences present a wide selection of courses to a large number of students. The American government and general education courses required of all students are only a few among those offered in history, geography, sociology, economics, and political science. ROW 1: D. Today, when any foreign land is within easy traveling distance, for busi- ness or pleasure, knowledge of a foreign language is of increasing importance. French, German, Spanish, and Russian are offered by the Department of For- eign Language and Literature. English is also taught as a foreign language for students from other countries. ' Professor Marguerite Lehr, head of the Mathe- matics Department at Byrn Mawr College, Byrn Mawr, Pennsylvania, presented a series of three lectures at Eastern, March 20 and 21. Lecturing on the topics, Parades, Geometry, and Alien Corn, Through the Complex Nlun- bers to the Quaternion Algebra, and Finite Division Rings are Fields, Miss Lehr offered a stimulating and entertaining approach to pure mathematics for faculty and mathematics students. ATI-IEMATICS The Department of Mathematics is growing rapidly at Eastern. With the emphasis being placed more and more on science and mathe- matics, increasing numbers of students are electing courses in mathe- matics for preparation in the iields of engineering and teaching. Because of the great demand for mathematics teachers, the training of students for this field is of major concern to the department and a sizeable library of teaching materials and aids is available to students in Walter O. Briggs Building, which houses the department. Time to relax is welcomed before digging into that Elements of Calculus book. 27 The Department of Special Education not only trains students in teach- ing the handicapped, but provides a school for the handicapped children of this area. The group had its beginnings in January 1909 at an informal gathering in the home of Professor J. Stuart Lathers, head of the Department of Oratory of Michigan State Normal College. A scholarship fund was begun in 1909 to encourage promising sopho- more students to return for their third year of study, for at that time, it was customary for those preparing to teach to remain in college only two years. The organization now awards a scholarship to each oflicer, and administers twelve scholarship funds with a principal totaling over S15,000. Nominees for membership are still selected from the sopho- more class and members are chosen by vote of the membership and the faculty on the basis of scholarship, moral responsibility, helpfulness in school affairs, and initiative. Stoic traditions which have continued over the years are the White Elephant Sale, the Reception for New Members, the Stoic Banquet, and the May Breakfast. Beginning with only eleven members, Stoic Society has grown with the college, and its 1959 student membership totals approximately one hundred. Its former members are serving in positions of honor and responsibility in this country and abroad. Quirk, Jr., Dramatic Arts Building opens the way for future expansion and progress in the field of speech and drama at Eastern. The new building, built around an outside peristyle, houses a 400- seat theater, a small studio theater, dressing rooms, workshop, costume shop, projection booth, four classrooms, ofiices, and a radio studio de- signed to accommodate television in the future. Mr. Quirk, in whose honor the building is named, was a long-time supporter of the college and a founder and patron of the local little theater movement. New features included the sale of tickets on a subscription basis and a coffee-discus- sion hour after each play, sponsored by Alpha Psi Omega. More students par- ticipated actively than ever before in the EMC Players' program, and there was a marked increase in audience sup- port. In the fall of 1958,qualified Eastern Michigan College student directors presented a one-act play bill consisting of Edna St. Vincent Mil- 1ay's Aria da Capo, Thornton Wilder's The Happy Journey to Trenton and Camden, and Sean O'Casey's The End of the Beginning. This marked the farewell performance in the Roosevelt High School Auditorium, which served for several years as the home of EMC plays. Student directors for the three plays were David Meneghel, Ronald Muchnick, and Jerry Tewmey. The gala opening of the Daniel L. Quirk, jr. Dramatic Arts Building followed shortly there- after. Its dedication production was a modern American drama, The Crucible, by Arthur Miller. The first performance was presented bn January 14, 1959. Our appreciation and sincere thanks go to Rosemary Lawrence, Dick Wilbur, Dale Fisher and Associates, Delma Studios and Mr. Sam Fields for all photographic servicesg to Edwards Brothers, Incorporated, and Marty Edwards for bearing with us in the face of all sorts of difficulties , pre- dominantly late deadlinesg to the S . K. Smith Company and Dick Rollins for helping Marge realize her choice of cover, to the Eastern Echo staff for general companion- ship and much helpg and to numerous others for their assistance and guidance, Mr. James E. Green, Mr. David Crippen, and many more. The road was long and hard, but the many new friends and acquaintances , the varied and numerous new experiences made it all very worthwhile. .lin EDWARDS BROTHERS, INC Ann Amer. Michigan
