It is the governing body of the men of this campus. The Men’s Union sponsored their annual “Yule Log Drag” in December at McKenny Hall. The Union worked hard to make the dance a success and was rewarded by a sellout crowd. The officers for the year were: Stanley Tomczyk, president; Ronald Oestrike, vice-president; Richard Miller, secretary; and Kent Thibaudeau, treasurer. Dean James “Bingo” Brown is the advisor for the Union. ROW 1: H. Cate, B. Baer, C. Callis, M. Brown. ROW 2: D. Weisil, J. Thompson, J. Crawford, M. Kilpatrick, B. Women’s League carried on many activities this year, including the tradition presenting of green ribbons to the freshmen women, Two dances were presented by the League this year, both eirl-bid, one in the fall and the other in the spring. The officers for the year were: Laverne Ladd, president; Cherrill Callis, vice-president; Phyllis Wright, secretary, and Marion Drue, treasurer. M. Walker, S. Daniells, A. Baril, M. Drue, C. The political debate given by Mr. Engelsman and Mr. Waugh, the Harvest Hop, and the League Lark were the largest activities, but not the most important. The Buzz Session, Community Service activities, and elections also required a great deal of work and planning. The League, the Student Council, and the Men’s Union also organized the foundations for the Leadership Training Work- shop that was held in February. To learn about the problems and solutions of such problems that arise in student government, League delegates attended the state convention of the Association of Women Students at Western Michigan College and the national convention at Ohio State University. The final activity was the initiation of new officers for the coming year. 30 ull s eg a - 9 The class of 1953 has had a profitable and successful four years at Normal. Along with scholastic activities, the class has found much enjoyment in participat- ing in the extra-curricular activities which make college so interesting. As freshmen, the class of ’53 was a little shy about entering things, but as sophomores they got into the swing. They entered a float in the homecoming parade, gave the annual Soph Swirl, and presented the Sophomore Variety Show. A s Juniors, the J-Hop was the top event of the year. As seniors at Normal, under the direction of President Don Denison, the class presented the Senior Musicale, ‘““Babes on Board.” Officers assisting the president were Rod Place, vice-president; Dorothy Curnow, secretary, and Gil Pearson, treasurer. The Senior Ball and graduation ended up the year for the class of 1953. Officers assisting Pr esident Flynn were Ron Wischer, vice-president; Jackie Dennison, secretary, and Aurelia Stan, treasurer. The first project of the juniors was their annual contribution to the home- coming parade. At the Christmas party the class sponsored a booth, to keep their activities underway. The second semester brought the J-Hop “Blue World” with Buddy Morrow and his orchestra to Normal’s campus. This highlite of the year was a marvelous success for the class. The class of 1955 has spent a profitable year, participating in all possible activities, and are looking forward to an equally triumphant senior year. 66 ROW 1: Bowman, L. Boye, D. Boyd, R. Their president, Bob Middlekauf, guided the group to great fame. ‘The fresh- man-sophomore games were a great victory for the sophomores, as usual. ‘The freshman put up a good fight, but it was no use. The green and white sophomore float was a gay contribution to the homecoming festivities, and a good time was had by the committee who worked on the float decorations. In March the Soph Swirl “Whirlwind” breezed in as a huge success. In May the annual variety show was a treat for the campus. A huge picnic finished off the year for the class of ’55. They started out with an entry in the homecoming parade and had a good time working on it. They put up a violent fight in the freshman-sophomore games but for some reason the sophomores came out victorious. I'wo freshman mixers kept the class organized socially. In May the annual class picnic was held, and an enjoyable time was had by all. Traditions have been built up around all phases of student life here at Michi- gan State Normal College. A few of these traditions have been practiced so long and are so generally taken for granted that they seem insignifcant in their contri- bution to campus life. One of these traditions is the Aurora, your college yearbook. Its real value appears after graduation when your association with the campus has been severed. It brings to mind many things which happened to you as well as your friends. We of the Aurora Staff have put into this yearbook some of the things which we think bear recording for future years and we hope it will bring many hours of pleasant memories to each of you. The club was formed by a group of students interested both in producing plays and in furtheri ng their appreciation of theatre through discussion and through at- tending plays given by other groups in this area. The M.S.N.C. Players presents a dramatic program each semester. George Kelly’s farce-comedy, “The Torchbearers,” was offered in the spring of 1952. In the fall of the same year, “The Browning Version,’ a serious drama by Terence Rattigan, shared the bill with Noel Coward’s light comedy, ‘‘Ways and Means.” Social activities, including cast-crew parties after the productions, are an important part of the M.S.N.C. Players’ program. Theatre makes use of a wide variety of student talents from building and painting scenery through business management and acting and directing. Anyone who has an interest in theatre in any of its phases is welcomed into the member- ship of the M.S.N.C. Players. Steel, F. Trosko, R. Kuhl The Huron football team was in for its share of glory this year, after a six- year famine. In the first season under new Head Coach Fred Trosko, the Hurons won five games, lost three, and tied one. Their three victories against two losses and a tie in Interstate Intercollegiate Conference play was good for third place in the conference, the highest position a MSNC team has placed in its short time in the ITAC. Fumbles by over-eager players demoralized the stout defense in key games. As a result, Central Michigan eliminated the Hurons from IIAC title contention while Wayne humbled Normal in the annual bitter-rivalry between the two schools. With Michigan Normal out of the way, Central went on to the ITAC championship. al k er = EE A fumble can be a heartbreaking th It looks like we’re about to lose the ball! nee Normal pushes forward to another victory. The Huron’s Webster Kirksey was named on the first five, and two other Normal cagers were elected to the second team. Cleon Gilliam was chosen as guard and Owen Sudman, as center. All t hree of these boys are only sophomores, so the future looks promising. Normal finished the basketball season with a grand year, and the entire cam- pus was sorry to see the season end. A word of thanks goes to each member of the team for the tireless effort they put forth to spur MSNC on to victory. 104 This year is becoming a notable year for Michigan Normal sports. Just re- cently, the Huron basketball team completed its schedule with a fine record of 14 victories and six defeats to join the football team and track squad in giving the Huron followers and alumni something to cheer about. Graduates will have to go back a long time to recall a MSNC basketball team which did as well as this year’s team. In compiling this winning mark, the Hurons had a winning streak of eight consecutive victories which included games over Wayne University and highly touted Eastern Illinois. As a result, Normal gained a tie for second place in the Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a conference mark of seven wins and five losses. Michigan Normal joined this conference along with Central Michigan in 1949, and this is the best record either Michigan school has been able to show against the basketball-minded Illinois schools which make up the remainder of the IIAC, The IIAC has offered good close competition in all sports, and Normal’s chance for a share of the title going into the last game is some indication of the closeness in basketball this season. The Hurons lost their last game, however, to fourth-place Northern Illinois, the only IZAC team which Normal failed to conquer at least once in the two meetings between each school in the ’52-53 season. Central Michigan was MSNC’s real stumbling block, though, by bursting the Huron bubble at its peak with a defeat, much the same as they did in foot- ball last fall. What hurst most of all, the Central Michigan Chippewas were tied for last place with a 4-8 record. Coach Bill Crouch’s first winning season in basketball since he took over the job in 1947 may be attributed to a well-balanced team led by the sensational guard from Saginaw, Webster Kirksey. Kirksey broke the school scoring record of 325 points, which, incidentally, he set last year as a freshman. Forty-six of his 369 points this season were scored in an overtime game at Illinois Normal, co-holders of second place, in which the Hurons won 102-99. Indoor Jan. Jan. Feb. Feb. Feb. Feb. Feb. Mar. Under Head Coach Bill Crouch, the Hurons of last spring enjoyed a winning season with a 13-6 won-lost record, and a runner-up finish in the ITAC conference. The Hurons started off slow with a team having only seven lettermen, but soon swept double-headers from most of the league opponents and added wins over University of Detroit, Wayne, Hillsdale, and Bowling Green. This year, with nine lettermen available, the Hurons will again be pulling for a standing in the first division. A good crop of freshmen ballplayers will strengthen the fielding and batting departments, but veteran righthander Paul Temple will be alone in assuring any experienced pitching. Five Michigan Normal players were named to berths on the All-ITAC baseball team. Pitcher Art Sheridan, second baseman; Bob Shankie and Stan Tomczyk, out- fielders, were named to the first team, while pitcher Paul Temple, and outfielder Rudy Hill were named to the second team. Climaxing the Homecoming events was an open house given by Mrs. Signor, a member of the alumnae chapter of Ypsilanti. The Christmas season found the Kappa Mu’s ‘helping a needy family. A party was given at the home of Sally Stevens during the holidays. The second semester brought a busy rushing season into full swing. In March we enjoyed a dance with the Theta Lambda Sigma Sorority. May was the month of activity for the Kappa Mu’s. We had our annual May Brunch in Detroit, given by our alums, honoring our sponsor, Miss Janet Meyers, who is celebrating her twenty-fifth anniversary with the sorority. An enjoyable time was had by all who attended the Mother’s Day Luncheon and also our week- end at the lake. Following this gala affair, we gathered for a chocolate hour at the home of one of our patronesses, Mrs. Charles Lamb. Shortly after homecoming, we trekked to Detroit where we enjoyed a dinner with the Alumni Chapter of Detroit. Our project at Christmas time was to furnish a basket of food for a needy family so that they could enjoy a holiday dinner. Small gifts were given to the children of the family. Through our efforts a much happier Christmas was made possible Following the Christmas holidays, we returned and elected our new officers, who were: Bobbie Mix, president; Chris Platsis, vice-president; Fran Fitzgerald, recording secretary; Pat Abernathy, corresponding secretary; and Joann Duber- ville, treasurer. Plans were soon underway for our annual Sweetheart Ball. The theme this year was “Fire and Ice.” Many alumni returned to witness the enjoyable evening that was had by all. Mid-way into the spring semester, a parents day pot-luck dinner was planned by the group. This was a wonderful opportunity for the parents to meet the advisors and other girls in the sorority. Probably the best and most complete description of the fraternity is included in the very first minutes taken by L. H. Lockwood in 95 . . . “this organization consists of young men who are the most congenial jolly, good-natured, talented in both music and literary work, of much influence in school and state .. . and the handsomest that the Normal affords.” Since this early time the Arm of Honor has taken athletics in stride as well as many other “non-curricular” activities. Prior to the last war the “Arm” had piled up more athletic championships than any other fraternitq, testimony for which may be found in the gymnasium. The original constitution states .. . “that there should be a closer and more intimate acquaintance among the royal good fellows” and that the “Hammerhead” society was created . . . “to promote good fellowship and foster a spirit of life-long fellowship among its members.” This the Arm has continued to do for fifty-five years. Its members believe above all else in the comradeship, the betterment of our college, and the promotion of those high ideals given to us through the years. 128 9 v se y i s ROW 1: T. Santer, B. Well, I guess we are. We have 28 pair of white bucks, 13 blue blazers and 2 prep ties (we borrowed the others). We have parties all the time. We serenade girls too. Some of us are old enough to drink beer—we don’t though. We have a president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer. We have 11 ukeleles. To provide adequate housing for our 538 active members, we are considering the purchase of the Water Tower. We have 35 men who would have varsity letters in football if they didn’t have trick knees. Only two of our men are going to be teachers. This annual affair was an overwhelming success. Another important achievement, was the rousing start made in athletics. The Kappas swept to championships in football, bowling and golf, second in tennis, third in volleyball, and were off to a good start in basketball. Activities coming up in the spring semester were the spring banquet under the supervision of Lyman Tower, and the annual Memorial Day picnic, Pledges initiated into the fraternity in the fall semester were Chet Wiles, Bob Kukovich, Bill Rouster, Bob Allan, and Doug Carlson. During the Christmas season, the group, in coopera- tion with the merchants of Ypsilanti and the Goodfellows, planned and made over two hundred toys for underprivileged children. As a new activity, the Club organized an Alumni Newsletter which keeps the past members informed of present events. The organization was well represented at both the Michigan Industrial Educa- tion Society Convention at Grand Rapids, and the American Industrial Arts Association National Convention in Detroit. To close the season, the Club held their annual Spring Picnic, for members and their families, at Recreation Park. Officers of the group were John Ball, president; and Ray Reiche, secretary- treasurer. The Club appreciated the guidance of Mr. George A. Willoughby as advisor, and the cooperation of faculty members of the Industrial Arts De- partment. M. Wilcox, Mr. Goings, W. Ferdon, D. Helm, D. Sevey, Mr. Pate, Mr. Falahee, J. Jensen. W. Beal, M. The year’s activities started with Dr. Wallace of the department showing slides on Florida marine life, with a group discussion following. A lecture on the Formation of Michigan followed. The newly returned Mr. Belcher spoke and showed slides on his trip through England. As the school year progressed, Dr. Johnson, sponsor of the club, showed films and spoke on Under- water Sea Life, and Termites at War. Next followed Dr. Loessell, head of the Natural Science Department, who spoke on his recent tour of Europe. Each of these meetings ended with a happy note—refreshments of coffee and donuts being served. The spring picnic and field trip in May showed the cooperative efforts of everyone, committees successfully carrying out the plans of the whole group. Solutions as well as suggestions for a successful club came from its members, 66 in number. The club’s officers, in turn, tried to carry out their wishes. Serving as president was Fred Chadwick; Duane Brown was vice-president; Doris Kemp, secretary, and Harrison Gonser, treasurer. All of the Natural Science Department have given the club a successful back- ing this year, with a sound, practical club being the result. ROW 1: M. Brummitt, P. Sundborg, A. Bierma, B. The year was opened with a picnic at Riverside Park to orient the students to O.T. Club. In the late fall the club planned a Bazaar consisting of a variety of articles made by the students. The profit from this Bazaar enabled the club to take a field trip through Percy Jones Army Hospital at Battle Creek. A Christmas play, written by Olive Koss, was given for the children at Rackham and for the patients at Ypsilanti State Hospital. The month of May was a busy one. The club participated in the Michigan O.T. Association meetings held in this vicinity by sponsoring a tea at Rackham. They. also attended the P.T.-O.T. meetings at Rackham. Also in May, the club enjoyed a banquet followed by installation of the new officers. During the year, movies were shown, including such topics as leathercraft, ceramics, and paper mache, and various guest speakers were featured.
