Secretary Dean Rockwell . . Treasurer The lVlen's Union of Michigan State Normal College again, as in the past, distinguished itself as the outstanding organization on the campus. The nineteen hundred and thirty-five organization of the Union ranked well above such organizations on other campuses throughout the United States The basis for this statement is taken from information gathered from statistics which President Ray Lowry collected at the National Con- ference of lVlen's Union Presidents, held at Purdue University. 40 MEN'S'l uisiiori At the beginning ol the college year, under a New Deal and F. E. R. A. jobs For all, the Menis Union promptly started preparation For the premiere of Homecoming celebrations. The Homecoming festivities, under the general chairmanship ol Ray Lowry, were built around the theme ol the l'luron lndians. The prizes for Floats and house decorations were cups which will be rotated each year and will become the permanent possession of the organization winning either trophy three times. ln their next undertalcing, the men again set the precedent for parties which were to iollow, in presenting the most suc- cessful and colorful ot Drags . Music was furnished by Duane Yates and his famous band. Decorations were in lolacl4 and silver with one hundred and Fifty silver stars studding the stage which was draped in tnlaclq with 'Yule Log Dragn, lettered in silver in Qld English, across the back. Sparkle was added to the decorations by two spotlights-one ot green and one of red, directed upon the stage. precedent is not to be talcen lightly, so with this thought in mind and with memories oi the 'fllragl' still vivid, the Union members produced the T935 edition ot the Spring Breeze. This Breeze was virtually a windstorm as those who were at the party will attest. The orchestra was excellent and did its best to make the wilted students throw all the thought of classes and enjoy themselves. 41 D Arnold Hutchinson Lowry Dunlap Place Good Newman Wenger MEN'S UNION EXECUTIVE BOARD The Executive Board ol the lVlen's Union tor T935 was an outstanding organi- zation dedicated to service and co-operation. The Executive Board, presided over by Bay Lowry, was very active in keeping alive campus tradition. Under the guidance of the Executive Board, the Homecoming celebration,Y'ule l.og Drag and Spring Breeze became realities. The Board also suggested the changes in the conduct ol the class games and urged the men to observe the rules concerning smoking on the campus. It was through the ettorts of Robert Arnold, Senior representative, that Ellsworth Vines was Brought to our campus. The Executive Board is always ready to do things, hence it has started plans lor a Musical Comedy, which will be given next year. Too much credit tor the success of T935 lVlen's Union cannot be given those men who worked unceasingly For the promotion ol the welfare of the men on this campus. Cgignedb Fred l.. Beckmann Secretary, lvlenis Union, T935 42 MEN'S UNION MEETINGS Three meetings were held per term throughout the year. lmportant business completed during the year vvas the passing ol unilorm rules governing Fall class games, l-leretolore the games were poorly organized lrom the standpoint ol rules and regulations. Qther outstanding events of the year included personal appearances on the campus ol outstanding men in the sport vvorld. The persons brought to the Michigan Normal Campus by the Menxs Union included Ellsworth Vines, tennis star, Jim l.ondos, vvrestling champion, and Mickey Cochrane, Manager ol the Detroit Tigers. Early in the Winter term, the baseball lilm, Hplay Bally' was shown to the men of the campus through the courtesy of the American League Baseball Association and the Wuerth Theatre. Much ol the credit lor the success ol the Menls Union ol 1935 must be given Dean james M. 'lBingo'l Brown for unlailing co- operation and guidance. The committee was composed of Lucien Sieradzki, chairman, Fred Beclcmann, Bob Wilson, Margaret Morrison, Lucile Ross, and Leola Barnes. 69 Bilto Rice Wilson Perry Lantz Tape CLASS DAY For Class Day activities Gerald Tape was chosen valedictorian and Eloise lillotson salutatorian. Mary Claire Rice read the class history, William Bilto the prophecy, and Eleanor Perry the class vvill. The class poet was Vivian Lantz, the soloist, Alice Coolq and the orator, Richard Delalorce. Through these, the past Four years were reviewed and the coming ones glimpsed. 70 Ostlund l-lowey Soule Beardslee Quackenbush Hallman Haidt Barnes l-lowe LANTERN WALK With grave and measured tread the seniors, clad in cap and gown and carrying lighted lanterns, made a stately march ol Farewell to the campus on Friday evening june twenty-First, i Following Ken l-lowe,.general chairman, the procession halted at the buildings in turn, and a tribute was paid to each by a member ol the class: Administration Building, l-loward Sechrest, Welch l-lall, Ruth l-lallman, Pierce l-lall, Elizabeth l'lowey, Library, Anna Quackenbush, Science Building, Paul Bartlett, Menls Gym, Glen l-laidt, Women's Gym, Leola Barnes, l-lealth Cottage, Dean Rockwell, Starlc- weather, Doris Ferris, Mclfenny l-lall, ,lohn Soule, Roosevelt, Eleanor l-lutson, and the Science Gardens, Roy Qstlund. 71 SENIOR HISTORY Four years ago, through the completion ol Charles Mclfenny l'lall, there began a new social life for M. S. N. C. students, and into this new lile came a group of six hundred wearers of green buttons and those ornamental headgears called Frosh Hpotsn. These newcomers mingled their exclamations of admiration with those of the upper-classmen as the wonders and possibilities of the new building were shown them. But not all their days could be spent in this delightful building. There were the dizzying complications ol classification, instructions concerning the use ol the library, frantic searchings for classrooms. ln spite of all this, the class organized itsell into an etlicient working group with Rudolph McCulloch, Cora May Dwelle, and lVlary Claire Rice as class otticers. As Sophomores, the class made plans lor the year under the leadership of Yates Kennedy and Professor Pray. As Sophs, the class came out on the short end ol the rope in the class games. Notwithstanding this, it placed many valuable men on the varsity teams. It was well represented on the student government boards and in debate and oratory. The junior year, with Robert Wilson as president, was made famous by the huge success of the il-l-lop. The college danced to the music of l-lenry Finney in a modern- istically decorated ballroom. The Final year was Filled with momentous preparation lor graduation. Again Robert Wilson headed the class and managed the traditional Slcip Day, Lantern Wall4 and Class Day. FRESHMAN HISTORY The girls were quiclcly talcen under the wings of campus sisters, but the fellows were allowed to shift for themselves with a chance to demonstrate a bit of that masculine fortitude. Although our superiors distributed green pins and pots as symbols of our ranl4, we did not become fully aware of their true significance until threats and monitions turned into too realistic duclcings, and we came to realize that freshmen were, indeed, of questionable importance in the eyes of upper classmen. Less strenuous but no Iess mortifying was the Womens League assembly, at which the- freshmen girls were allowed to relinquish their green emblems after the humiliatingg admission that they were but lowly earthworms. I We toolc up our first business of the year when we gathered in Welsh Audi- torium and elected our new officers. After listening to the candidates' speeches- an innovation-we Finally chose the following: Abram Hodge, president, Mary Jane Coe, vice-president, Ruth Halleran, secretary, William Lyons, treasurer. These students lost no time in naming committees to arrange for the Freshman Mixer, which was held November '10, 1934, and went down on the record as a very successful. party. . 117 Z . Have you peace, the quiet urge that reveals your power? Have you beauty, that leads the heart from things fashioned of Wood and stone to the holy mountain? ' -The Prophet F E A T U R E S u 5 0 FROM FARM TO FORTUNE By l-loratio Alger, slr. CHAPTER I N Qnce upon a time, there descended From tlwe Upper Peninsula a young Swede Wlwo made a name lor lmimsell in Micliigan State Normal College, as a slow-spoken, direct delbaterl CHAPTER Xl. Tlwen once upon a time, not so very long ago, tlwere descended, again, from the Upper Peninsula, the former President ol Marquette College, who was the Former student of the First clmapter, to become tlwe still slow-spoken and direct President of tlwe college lie once attended. 191 TWILIGHT OF YOUTH Silent and sweet as summer evenings are, The western sky, subsiding to a spent Rose-taupe remembrance ol the sunls descent, I-lung lrom the lurtive Flicker ol a star, Brown, melting shadows stretched across the ground Beneath a dripping disc ol mellow moon, Then sudden crickets singing, and the tune Converted to a strange, soft, moonlit sound. So come our youthlul twilights, when we stand Touched by the solt, dim light ol years to come, And feeling in our nostrils all the sweet perfume ol Iile and living, on one hand, Today grows dim, and on the other, some prophetic moon throws shadows at our Feet. -Keith Cox COMPENSATION If we should always dwell upon the heights The very mountain tops would seem a plain, And should we drink continuous ol delights, They soon would be insipid, stale and vain. There is zest in climbing to the rare attained And rosy peak, seen from the vale below. The cup ol joy that is not often drained Lures ever with its sparkle and its glow. -johanna A. Sabourin 192 THE SCIENCE GARDENS AND BEYOND -in spring- My heart is plastic, and these ltnolls and ridges Mold it to shape their own similitude. My heart is all one wide and soft, green smoothness, Rolling and dipping in a verdant mood. My heart is fertile and it brings iorth beauty, pale, glowing blossoms on a lealless tree, And close and lar and Filling lull the distance, Green branches where the gray ones used to be. My hearts a symphony and in the passage, A swiit and smooth cadenza for the Flute, Till suddenly, against the hinted twilight, A bird is silent and the whole world mute, My heart is liquid and it clinl4s and gurgles Qver a thiclc, gray root above the ground, My heart is vast and tremulously placid And sparkles splashlessly without a sound. My heart is quiet and the day is ended, The humming twilight dims and disappears. Now l have closed my heart and shut within it Enough of beauty lor a million years. -Keith Cox EARLY MORNING Let me steal one more crumb From the banquet oi Sleep ln the hall oi the Castle oi Rest. When the day bugle calls And the portcullis falls, The crumbs snatched in haste Taste the best. 'Johanna A. Sabourin ws I-IOMECOMING Huron Days, conceived and directed by Robert Arnold and ,john Hutchinson, co-chairmen of Homecoming, and Ray Lowry, president of the lVlen's Union, marked the gala week-end of the year.- lhe tug-ol-war between the Freshmen and Sophomores put a dramatic Finish to the traditional rivalry between the two lower classes with the Sophomores emerging victorious. Sprinting, pushing, broken heels, and several black eyes characterized the annual loot-race from an inspiring pep meeting at Pease Auditorium to the Wuerth Theatre Friday evening. 'Weird braves and sauaws ot every tribe and color were in evidence during the Big parade. There were noise makers, toy guns, and tomahawks enough to make the bravest pale-lace wish he hadnlt ventured into the midst of this Huron cere- monial. Prizes were awarded to the junior Class, Womenls League, and W. A. A. for originality in Float decoration. The football team, spurred to a winning pitch before a crowd of Five thousand Halumsn and students defeated St. Viators 'I 3-O. During the half, Ray Lowry awarded prizes for Floats and house decoration. Dr. Charles Anspach as master of ceremonies and HBingoH Brown as main speaker made the Football Banquet a live affair. Clare Wigell's band played to the largest crowd ever accommodated in lvlclfenny Ballroom. 194 RE-INCARNATION NIGHT The Co-ed Prom, the annual Womenls League masquerade party, was held March sixteenth, at Mclfenny l-lall. At this Pe-incarnation party everyone dressed according to her suppressed desire. Two groups evinced their desire to be the famous Dionne lamily, and the prize lor the cleverest costumes went to Roberta Chapel and Verona Blair as Mr. and Mrs. Dionne, and to Gertrude Deal, Etlie Mulcrone, Miriam vlollitte, ,lessie Prentice and Betty Stanavvay, as their progeny. The prize lor the handsomest couple went to Ruth l-lolleran and Connie Dudley, vvho came as pride and groom. The prettiest costume prize was vvon by Bo-Peep, personified by Mavis Nash, and the lunniest couple award was talcen by Arlene Munn ond Clara Walker, dressed as southern darlcies. The best character portrayal was done lay l lelen l'larding as Dr. Dafoe. The Executive Board in 1857 was interpreted by the present Women's League Executive Board, dressed in old-Fashioned array. Margaret Cvven and Nell Martin vvaltzed their vvay to a prize in the waltz contest. Music was furnished by Clare Wigell and his orchestra, assisted by a trio composed ol Marian Meisel, Mary ,lanchul4, and Mary Smith. Frank Walton entertained the re-incarnated co-eds with tap dancing. 19-5 THE SCAPEGOAT This world's a sorry place. We live to die, And dying leave no answer to the why We ask while living, though our voice ascends -lo l-leaven pleading, there is no reply. All our lile's a question. We are born From nowhere, naked, in a cold, lorlorn, And ruthless world. We live, grow old, and then? We disappear with no one lelt to mourn. There are those whold gladly point the way. The ones who answer thus: Learn how to pray, And others just as blindly wise: Not Gods, But lor humanity we live, they say. This world's a stepping stone to better things, Some answer, with the dream ol harps and wings, And golden street, some make the same reply But with the dream ol l-lell that conscience brings. This is what the man ol science tells- lVlan is a process-made up ol myriad cells. All different? Yes, ol course. Why, l don't know. Ch nol not God. ln them no spirit dwells. Agnostic, unbeliever, and the priest All have an answer ready, and the least That we can do is listen-though we laugh. And laughing raises man above the beast. No act is neutral. lt's good or bad because Man has made a set ol moral laws For man to keep or break. We break or keep lhem inadvertently-or lor applause. Our sins, do they die with us or exist V To plague our heirs? lt's written: They persist. But what are sins that they should thus remain Sole monuments long alter we are missed? ln ages past the scapegoat bore the blame. Each year a priest heaped all the tribal shame Cn an old goats head, then drove it out to die, While a people praised and shouted their god's name Poor guiltless goatl Doomed by divine decree -lo death, and those who sinned are lreel Does sin live on? Cr perish with the goat? And what is sin? Man asks eternally. W Then what ol wrongs that were the goat's alone? Could it by dying lor the tribe, atone For its mistakes? The scheme ol things is lalsel Who but the debtor should repay the loan? 196 Yet all this tall4 of nothing leads us-where? l.acl4ing a' goal, ior what must we prepare? Existence is uncharted. There is an end We lcnow, however, thatis not our aiiair. Again the voice ascendsl A prayeriul wail To never present l-leaven-it too will fail. No answering voice is heard. All gods are dead All vanquished by iconoclastic hail. Each generation bears its crop oi woes. The generation dies, and late bestows Cn the succeeding one the iormer's cares. Scapegoat for the sin some other sows. So were the scapegoat. l-leaped upon our head Are all the sins oi those who now are dead, Cr should be, and we struggle onto die. It were better ii it were our sins instead. Priest-like the elder generation stands Above us, just as priest-lilce, it demands That we not only bear the blame, but how. And, just as goat-lil4e, we heed its commands. l thinlc that man is born for better things. Truly to Fly-not vainly wish for wings. The nature oi the beast lceeps us on ground The hawk brings down the smaller bird that sings. Ii man could but be born untrammeled, free, Without the elder's burden constantly Upon his head, then liie would be a joy Amd man a butterfly, not just a bee. But we can mould our lives into the shape We so desirel Yes, meaninglessly ape Our predecessors who have been called great. Birth casts a die from which there is no 'scape. From inlancy our thoughtless heads are crammed With knowledge-till the gap oi time is spanned, Qur minds are up-to-date, and we are sent Gut in the world-'aiscapegoat to be damned. Again we tallc oi nothings. Whatis the end? IF there is no answer, can we hope to mend With idle mouthings the problems oi the years? If there is a way, on what does hope depend? -Anonymous 197 :gy V --lx eq i ,- 5 4 c , 'if A iff' -lb 4 -I Neff var XX neg! -. NWA 594, A bv! Mft! Q!
