Frederic H. Pease MYRA L. BIRD x esteemed director of the Conservatory of Music When a very young man, Mr Pease came to make Ypsilanti his home, and for forty-one years has been connected with this institution. The standing which the Michigan State Normal Conservatory has throughout this state and even in other states, is due largely, if not entirely, to his untiring efforts. The growth of the department since the Conservatory was established has been very gratifying. The hrst year there were two assistants and now there are Hfteen. Mr. Pease's teaching has not been confined to one branch of the art. He has been equally successful as a teacher of voice, piano, theory and organ. It is a source of great regret. to his friends and tothe students that they do not have the pleasure of hearing him more often at the organ. But nothing has been said of his greatest talent and that is his ability as chorus conductor. There is nothing in connection with this school of which the city and state are more proud than ofthe Normal chorus. And how has it gained such favor? Not because it is composed of trained singers, for only a very small proportion of them are such, but because it is under the leadership of a man who stands second to none in that capacity. We End without exception that students who have been members of the chorus look back upon that work as one of the most pleasant ot their college experiences. Mr. Pease has always given to the public the very best compositions, and it has been through his efforts that the people of this city have had the opportunity of hearing some of the great artists of our country. In addition to all this he has always found time to study and compose. He has studied with many of the prom- inent teachers, both here and abroad, and is very well-known as a composer.
