In these days of progressive education, oral recitation has superseded the excessive use of daily written quizzes. The members of the drama classes have fun with their oral work by presenting plays. readings, and discussing outstanding Broadway productions. Here Marilyn Cochran, Dennis Parr, and Dorothy Barker Rehearse for a scene from one of their many skits. Communication skills are of major interest in the first Sopho- more English course. Five themes and Eve speeches consti- tute a major portion of a semes- ter's work in this course. Gor- don Wilson is in the midst of a demonstration speech. College Prep students must go through the agonies of who and whom before they begin to write that all important long term, Ken Aylesworth puzzles on just such a problem while Frank DeRose explains to him which is correct. Do you have the February 20, 1936, issue of Life, Miss Pear? All magazine requests are not so diiiicult to fill but, whatever the question, a student is certain to Find help from either of the librarians. Here, Miss Pear and Mrs. Arnell look over the new arrival of magazines. Social Science X,,,,3:.a.. ffjxam , H, . ffm- Political science holds no mystery for Bruce Everett. With the aid of a few charts, he discloses its secret to Danola McGinnis and Jerry Erzen. As a required course for all Senior B's, government provides valuable information for future citizens. Whether artists or not, a course in U. S. History is not complete without a few free-hand maps of our country. Lewis' and Clark's expedition is more easily understood when Kay Moss and Don DeLoof draw it on the board for the rest of the class. Language z E 1 'I ! ll A glimpse into the past, via Caesar, Vergil, Cicero, and pictures, is taken by all students electing Latin. Dick Padgett, jane Penton, and Bev Weesner enjoy the most popular form of absorbing culture-a mural, depicting the Roman family. A miniature guillotine is inspected by Wayne Foster and jo Ann Gibson, Per- haps it is a reminder to all French students to conjugate those verbs, or else. However, such in- gredients are kept out of reach: useful experiments, such as Monty Roggow and Roberta Scott are conducting, take up most of the lab periods. Any good biology stu- dent knows an amoeba when he sees one-or does he? Since Richard McQueen seems to have found what he's looking for, he's only too glad to help Rosalie Albert com- plete her experiment. After completing a year of biology, if students feel they want to learn more about the human body and its func- tions, they elect physiology. It is here that advanced art students map out and paint signs for various school activities. Roz Whaley and Bob Borghi are intent on a sign, advertising the art club's noon dances. Home Economics Students electing courses in foods, clothing, or personal and social problems find the information gained in the home economics department valuable in later years. Here, as in the commercial curriculum, are a variety of selections-even a course in home manage- ment to prepare the prospective housewife for her duties. Goodies! The semester project of the personal and social problems class is unique-that of planning and presenting a mock wedding. This year they presented both a formal and informal ceremony. At the end of the proceedings, they posed before the altar: Dick Irish, Joyce Alspaugh, Grady Smalley. Betty Weeks, Kent Van deVrede, Diane DeYoung, Basil Cole, Ruth Steadman, Gary Nelson, Joyce Arts, Wayne Hortsman, Roberta Ayles, Judy Brown, and Betty Campbell. 2 N Is' fiiJlyA fi J ' W1 ,S nad First comes typing, then shorthand, and then transcription. The team won i-irst place in the Albion Col- lege Invitational, for the Erst time in our history. Another First was in the Class A regional which was the first time since 1933. The team was in third place in the Chippewa relays and runner-up in the 5-A conference. Winning six out of seven dual meets the team finished up fifth in the state meet. This is the highest we have finished in our history. With plenty of good material for the 1954 team Coach Fraser will be able to continue this good record set in 1953. Although the number of boys out for golf was small, the team won sixth place in the state out of sixteen teams. They came in second out of six teams in the regional. Coach Maynard Doc Morrison had four seniors on his 1953 team who worked hard all season and Senior golfer, Bob Kiwala, in action. contributed much to the team. l.
