Fowler, Coach Morrison, Coach Cohn Football Our fighting Quaker team encountered both success and bitter disappointment on the gridiron in 48. Although defeated in their opener at Saginaw, Eastern bounded back the following week-end to inflict a 14 to O defeat on a fast, shifty Owosso team. Frank Smith and Larry Stoner played a staunch line game, and Stowe and Forman combined to give our backfield a fast-scoring punch. After losing three in a row, Eastern entered the Ann Arbor game none too confidently. Inspired play enabled our team to trounce their foe 25 to 12. Commendable performances for this game were registered by the revamped backfield of Stowe, John Malatinsky, Petersen, and Suska. Special praise should be given to johnny Malatinsky for his outstanding offensive play, and to our line composed of Marcussen, Smith, Clingerman, Stoner, Richards, Fowler, and Sturtevant. After tying a fighting Grand Rapids South team, Eastern's eleven readied itself for the tradi- tional conflict with their cross-town rival-Lansing Sexton. Rain, sleet, and gummy mud hampered both teams in their offensive game in this twentieth meeting of rival football powers. Managing to gain a touchback, in what proved to be the deciding break in a very tense, hard-fought game, Sex- ton won for itself the coveted victory 2 to 0. Looking back over an eventful season, we see that stars have risen-Stowe, Richards, the Malatinskys, Sturtevant, Smith, and Forman. They now vanish and make way for the stars of 49.
