Bobrofsky Managers One seldom hears of the unsung heroes of our athletic teams. While glancing through the sport section thus far, perhaps you have noticed fellows not in uniform. These are the boys working as managers: they often work longer and, in many respects. harder than the athlete who receives the publicity surrounding his particular sport. We, the graduating senior boys, pay tribute to their unpublicized efforts by saying to Mr. Butler and his managers, Thanks, fellows, for your patience, geniality, and unselfish help. l1lO1 -. - .

Wrestling Wrestling, ably coached by Don Johnson, ended its third year at Eastern. Cheered on by enthusiastic crowds, our men placed third both in the 5-A and the state. Dean McKay, state cham- pion of a year ago, proved his worth this year by annexing another state crown. Our other state champion was Bob Foster at 145 pounds. Don Phillips, winner of the state AAU meet, Dick Reese, Tom Champras, and Max Van Vlerah all showed plenty of power in their respective weights. With good material coming up, Coach Johnson hopes for an even more successful year in 1950. Eastern's chances for a winning team this year have been weakened by a poor turnout of upper classmeng how- ever, the large number of talented sophomore athletes indicates future strength. Probable point winners will be Dean McKay in the mile run, john Bond and Jack Sturtevant in both the 440 and relays, plus Dennis Gil- christ and Chris Saunders in the sprints. Ron Miske, Bob Sears, and Bruce Newman, all sophomores, will compete in the high jump. Maiwiami HM! law L1o9J

Tennis Tennis has faded into the background of Eastern's sports in the last few years. Too many promising players are acting as onlookers instead of displaying their talent on the courts. How- ever, a change has taken place this season. Under the capable guidance of Coach Cohn, our team is gaining needed practice and confidence. jerry Clark, Larry Stoner, Roger Grove, Don Geahan, and the others are out to win. These fellows hope that their enthusiasm will awaken more interest in the flashing racket and bouncing ball so that Eastern in the future may once again be strong in tennis. Basketball Coach Ray Altenhof's boys placed third in the 5-A in 49. Regular season play saw Eastern lose 8 and win 6. This year, as in years past, Eastern's tournament jinx remained with us as we dropped the first tournament game to Battle Creek. The year's outstanding individual performance was turned in by Herb Marcussen, First string 5-A center. Jack Sturtevant and the spark plug of the team, Don Heller, also contributed a great deal to the life and fight of our squad. As only four players gradu- ate this year, the remaining varsity members will form a promising nucleus for 1949. .Ja A F Z 522,14-1.3-,.4Ji 1 Y Golf Fore! This cry, familiar to all golfers, means that spring has arrived. With the advent of golfing weather, we Find Coach Doc Morrison's charges getting in plenty of prac- tice prior to their opening match. Herb Marcussen, versatile athlete, will join Jim Stephens, Ron LaFraugh, and Gerry Kinnison to form our starting foursome this spring. Past performances of these fellows indicate that their chances for a winning campaign this year are excellent. 51111
