FOOTBALL SUMMARY Facing an unusually tough schedule, our team, after a slow start, emerged with a season's record of 3 wins, 4 defeats, and 1 tie. This, however, does not show the true strength of our squad, because with a few breaks our team could have had better results. The Eastern team, for their first encounter, played host to a shifty, hardhitting Hill- topper eleven, who rolled to a 26 to 6 victory. The following Saturday night, our boys journeyed to Owosso for their first road game of the season. Although the defense of our eleven had improved, a strong offense still was lacking. The final score was Owosso 6, Eastern 0. Having returned to their homegrounds for the first 5-A game of the season, Eastern showed great improvement. Jackson scored a touchdown on the opening kickoff. After that, Eastern completely dominated the game, though only scoring cne touchdown. The play of Jack Sellers, john Allen, and Marv McFadden was outstanding. For the second 5-A league rival, the Quakers played Battle Creek. Again our boys played good ball and with a few breaks could have won the game. Battle Creek's fleet colored back, Vaughn, scored one touchdown and set up another. At the final gun, Bat- tle Creek stood 13, Eastern 0. Next on the schedule was a non-league affair with Benton Harbor. Still without their share of breaks, Eastern lost a heart-breaker 13 to O. Seeking their first victory of the season, an improved and hard-driving Quaker squad traveled to Ann Arbor. Staging the best offensive show in two years, Eastern came out on top in a seesaw battle 26 to 19. The following week, a high-spirited, offensive-minded Quaker eleven rolled over a speedy Grand Rapids South team 25 to 14. This game served as a warm-up affair for the Sexton game. To finish a none-too-impressive season, Eastern met their Westside rivals at Macklin Field. Though playing on wet and soggy ground, the Quakers played their best game of the year. Large gaps were opened in the line to let Jack Sellers, jack Miner, and Floyd Stowe through for excessive yardage. Urban Bomber Nelson skirted the ends time after time for long gains. The whole team played great ball, but special mention should be given to Mack Hethorn, Marv McFadden, and Captain John Allen. The only touch- down of the game was made by Floyd Stowe through the center of the line. Doug McKim then faked a placement and passed to Jack Miner for the extra point. This ended the scor- ing as Eastern won 7 to 0. There is hope for a greater season next fall. because such boys as Forman, Stowe, Clingerman, and Sturtevant will be back to carry on where the team left off this year. f119l
