Chairman for Speech Division of the School masters' Club. FORENSIC ACTIVITIES Eastern High School points with pride to the achievements of thc Varsity Debate Squad. During the last seven years, they have compiled the following remarkable record: 1943- 1944- 1945 1946 1947 1948 Under Mr. Howard Cole and William Hanley Won the Michigan State College Debate League Championship. This was the first year that any Lansing school had participated in this contest. Dale Redburn and Don Hathaway advanced to the semi-finals in the state contest. -Marjorie Harrod and Richard Clausen won the state championship. -Lulamae Gibbs and Russell Lambert reached the quarter-finals before being defeated. -joan Willson and George Milroy took part in the finals of the state championship debate. -Once more Eastern is taking part in the final debate championship with Don Jolliff and James Starr representing their school. Harris' guidance, Eastern has become the only Michigan high school to win seven successive state elimination tournaments. Only one other Michigan school, Flint Central, has taken part in the state cham- pionship debate for two years in succession. Lioej Member of Tau Kappa Alpha, national honor-

Vs DON S. WHEELER The assistant principal, Mr. Leyrer, has many varied jobs. He is the ad- visor of the Student Council and also heads our efficient stall' of hall officers. Another of his Worries is that of taking care of our absences and tardi- nesses. Mr. Leyrer has been very successful in handling his many jobs. Mr. Wheeler, our principal, has won the respect of faculty and students through his congenial spirit and forceful leadership. His executive ability has been shown many times during the past year. The club is a new organization, but it is one of the largest in Eastern, for there are many students taking the retailing and ofhce practice course and, thus, automatically have become mem- bers of this club. Mrs. Mattson, coordinator in retailing, and Mr. Manz, coordinator in office prac- tice, are the sponsors of this group. The Retailing and Office Club has grown out of a real need, for the students electing this particular phase of commercial work learn the theory of business during morning classes and apply it on a related job during,the afternoon. Consequently, these people have had little opportunity for social activity in school, so the organization came into being. Since there was exactly the same situation in other towns, many retailing clubs have been founded. These separate clubs federated on a state-wide basis in the spring of 1947. Each local president and secretary attended a meeting in Grand Rapids at which time club activities were organized and a name chosen. Last November these delegates met in Lansing and completed the constitution of the club. f107l
