Senior A's Graduate in Iaunty Caps Cn lune lB, l938, the largest class ever to graduate from Eastern will receive their diplomas. Wayne Green was their first presi- dent. ln their second year, Mary Alice lennings stepped forward to direct the activities of the class. ln social circles the biggest enterprise was the l-l-lop, 'Bippling Bhythmf' of which Martha Payne and loseph Kroll were co-chairmen. By this time Bobert Sherman, Donald Bobart, Wayne Green, and Ferry Bath- burn had become outstanding athletes, while Milbourne Moore had carried away honors in swimming. Originality has been the keynote in this class's activities, and it was displayed again when Mary Alice lennings was elected Senior Class President the first girl ever to receive this honor. Mr. Vanlsiere gave up his position as class advisor to Mr. Leyrer during this year. Upon Dick Budd, the highest honor possible was bestowed when he was chosen Student Council President. loseph Kroll and Mary lane Couchois displayed outstanding dramatic ability in the Senior B Play, The Ivory Door, while Doris Veith and Harold Folks starred in the opera, Countess Maritzaf' l-lelen Scholl, Barbara Scheidt, and Dorothy Pruirn also carried top honors in the musical field. The literary talent of the class was supplied by Carol Letzring, editor-in-chief of the Easterner, and Esther Tueling and Douglas Dawe, co-editors of the Lantern. With Frances French winning the District Oratorical Cham- pionship, and Marguerite Bowden, lna Springer, Robert Tefft, and Kelvin Kiebler talking their way to success as debators, the reputation of our speech department was definitely established. Wendall Morse, Marian Knight, and Marguerite Bowden as chairmen cf the Senior Prom, Banquet, and Program respectively, turned in excellent performances to complete the activities of the Class of l938. By the way, Mr. Anderson speaks several different languages. He has even taught school in Constantinople. Spanish is quite a favorite of his students. When the fray had ended and the dust had risen from one of the best matched battles in the city iniershigh school football games, Eastern was cn the lesser end of a l3-6 score. ln the opening contest of the season with Rochester, the veteran Eastern team ran rampant and scored a 63-O victory. The next week, the Quakers were forced to make several goal-line stands against the River Rouge powerhouse while contenting themselves with a single touchdown to win, 6-U. Sherman was named as forward on the second team on the Detroit Free Press all-state cage squad. Rathburn was given honorable mention. The season was opened with a victory over the alumni. Next came a defeat by Ann Arbor. Things began to pick up with victories over lackson and Central with scores of 27-23 and l8-6, respectively. Port Huron tcok home a 25-28 overtime triumph. A defeat by Battle Creek followed. Wins over Bay City and Ann Arbor balanced the losses to Grosse Pointe and Iackscn. Central was beaten the second time 30-28. Muskegon was trampled, 38-26, and the league championship was cinched by the victory over Battle Creek, 3l-23. ln the regionals the squad advanced to the finals by winning, 29-24. Matched against a powerful Saginaw Eastern team, Quakers played a stellar game to lead the first half. However, they lagged in the second half, and lost, 24-34. Perhaps this accounts for the success in the season with only one contest lost in the 5-A League to Battle Creek, l-O. The Eastern nine opeved against East Lansing and, with Wayne Green hurling a no run -no hit game, won ll-O. Green duplicated his initial performance with another no run no hit game against lonia. Then the seasons only defeats were suffered to Grand Ledge and Battle Creek. The second game with East Lansing was close, the Quakers winning 4-3. Ann Arbor was easily taken, 8-3. Walt Harrington also pitched a no runeno hit game, this one being over Howell. The Iackson Vikings next fell to the Quakers by the count of 5-4. ln the final game cf the season, Central was trampled in a onessided game, l2-O.
