16 Dedicated Years We, the Oasis Staff of 1966, dedicate this record of the academicand social world of Eastern Arizona College to Dr. John W. Long, Jr.-capable ad- ministrator, master teacher, and dedicated educator. For the past 16 years he has been an integral part of this world-a world that he has shared with his students and colleagues alike. Dr. Long came to Eastern Arizona College in 1950 from Western College for Women' at Oxford, Ohio where he was assistant professor of history. He taught classes in history and political science at Eastern for 11 years prior to his appointment as Dean of Instruction in 1961. His classes were alive and vibrant and he taught from a background of information and with such authority one could be- lieve that he had lived through these ages as an active participant. During his tenure at Eastern, Dr. Long has chaired several committees including his current chairmanship of the Curriculum and Instruction Committee and the Catalog Committee. He is a member of the Admissions, Library and Audio- Visual Aids, Scholarship, and Staff Personnel committees. Outstanding among his accomplishments have been the publishing of the 180-page Self Study Re- port on the college for the North Central Associa- tion of Colleges and Secondary Schools which was prepared under his direction, the entry of Eastern into the State Junior College System in which he also played a significant part, and the addition of junior college education at Williamsport-Dickinson Seminary and Junior College fnow Lycoming Col- legej where for many years, his father, Dr. John W. Long, Sr. was college president. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Dickinson College and M.A. and Ph.D. from Duke University. While studying at Duke, he was honored with mem- bership in Pi Gamma Mu, National Social Science Honor Society. He has held academic scholarships at both Duke and at Dickinson College. He has taught at Duke University, the University of Maryland, and at the Army Air Force Historical Division, Gravelly Point, D.C. He served with the U.S. Army during World War Il and received his honorable discharge in 194-5. Dr. Long is a member of the Arizona College Association, American Historical Association, Mis- sissippi Valley Historical Society, Sigma Alpha Ep- silon, American Political Science Association, and the National Audubon Society. We regret his decision to leave the college in whose growth he has so actively participated and accomplishments in which he has shared. May this dedicatory page and these few words convey to him the high esteem with which he shall always be held at Eastern Arizona College. Yes, it is to you Dr. Long, that we the staff of the Oasis, dedicate this 1966 record of the academic and social world here. new curriculums and over 50 new courses ap- proved, many already introduced into the college program. In 1963, Dr. Long was named Man of the Year in recognition of his accomplishments. Easternls recent accreditation by the North Cen- tral Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools is marked with his efforts. Dr. Long received his elementary, secondary and 1,3 -t - 1 ------ History Instructor 'X 1950-1961 Man of the Year-1964
