Long, Jr.-capable ad- ministrator, master teacher, and dedicated educator. For the past 16 years he has been an integral part of this world-a world that he has shared with his students and colleagues alike. Dr. Long came to Eastern Arizona College in 1950 from Western College for Women' at Oxford, Ohio where he was assistant professor of history. He taught classes in history and political science at Eastern for 11 years prior to his appointment as Dean of Instruction in 1961. His classes were alive and vibrant and he taught from a background of information and with such authority one could be- lieve that he had lived through these ages as an active participant. During his tenure at Eastern, Dr. Long has chaired several committees including his current chairmanship of the Curriculum and Instruction Committee and the Catalog Committee. He is a member of the Admissions, Library and Audio- Visual Aids, Scholarship, and Staff Personnel committees. Outstanding among his accomplishments have been the publishing of the 180-page Self Study Re- port on the college for the North Central Associa- tion of Colleges and Secondary Schools which was prepared under his direction, the entry of Eastern into the State Junior College System in which he also played a significant part, and the addition of junior college education at Williamsport-Dickinson Seminary and Junior College fnow Lycoming Col- legej where for many years, his father, Dr. John W. Long, Sr. was college president. He received his Bachelor of Arts from Dickinson College and M.A. and Ph.D. from Duke University. While studying at Duke, he was honored with mem- bership in Pi Gamma Mu, National Social Science Honor Society. He has held academic scholarships at both Duke and at Dickinson College. He has taught at Duke University, the University of Maryland, and at the Army Air Force Historical Division, Gravelly Point, D.C. He served with the U.S. Army during World War Il and received his honorable discharge in 194-5. Dr. Long is a member of the Arizona College Association, American Historical Association, Mis- sissippi Valley Historical Society, Sigma Alpha Ep- silon, American Political Science Association, and the National Audubon Society. We regret his decision to leave the college in whose growth he has so actively participated and accomplishments in which he has shared. May this dedicatory page and these few words convey to him the high esteem with which he shall always be held at Eastern Arizona College. Yes, it is to you Dr. Long, that we the staff of the Oasis, dedicate this 1966 record of the academic and social world here. new curriculums and over 50 new courses ap- proved, many already introduced into the college program. In 1963, Dr. Long was named Man of the Year in recognition of his accomplishments. Easternls recent accreditation by the North Cen- tral Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools is marked with his efforts. He has provided the leadership which will bring to the College a new quarter million dollar voca- tional technical huilding sched- uled for completion in the spring of 1967. Miss Linda Clifford I A EAJ C Suffers Losing Win One, Tie One, Lose Eight Despite a better than average number of returning lettermen, 1965 was a year of rebuilding for Eastern Arizona Junior College's gridders. Lack of experience in several crucial areas, especially quarterback, pro- vided numerous problems for head coach Dalton Overstreet and his staff, Scoring was one of the biggest problems as the Monsters were unable to generate a massive offensive threat, scoring only 14- points in their most pro- ductive effort. The hapless Monsters were shutout on four occasions, two of which were in Arizona Junior College Athletic Conference action. The Purple and Gold opened the season on a losing note, bowing to a rugged Dixie College eleven, 27-7, followed by a heartbreaking 16-13 defeat by Snow College the next week. Snow broke a 13-13 deadlock, with only 16 seconds left, on a 15 yard field goal. This game later turned out to be the Monster's only victory as the Ephriam, Utah team forfeited their vic- tory because of an ineligible player, giving the Monsters a 13-0 victory. A 0-0 tie with a big University of Arizona freshmen squad the following week was the nearest EA came to an on-the-field victory. From then on the Monsters found the going rough as they dropped their last seven ' games. Although turning in respectable showings, Eastern was completely outclassed the following two weeks as they battled nationally ranked New Mexico Military Institute and Taft College. The Institute beat Eastern 35-14, while Taft sloshed their way to a 27-0 vic- tory in the Monsters' wet homecoming encounter. Monster stature hit a low ebb as they journeyed to Grand Junction, Colorado and dropped a 16-6 contest to a previously winless and very weak Mesa College squad. The Monsters continued their massive down- fall as they entered competition in the three team Arizona Junior College Athletic Conference, dropping both by 50-0 scores to Phoenix College and Arizona Western. The Monsters received little relief from their con- sistently rugged schedule during the final two weeks as they met two highly touted freshmen teams, New Mexico State and Arizona State University. New Mexico rallied in the second half, after a surprising first half Monster performance, to overcome a 10-7 halftime deficit and win 20-10. The Monsters closed out the season on Nov. 20 with a 38-14 loss to the ASU Freshmen. Fumbles and pass interceptions cost the Monsters good field positions on several occasions and directly contributed to one of Dixie's scores. The highlight of the evening for EA fans was a 74- yard touchdown in the closing seconds of the second quarter. Quarterback Phil Fluharty flipped a short pass to fullback John Smith who scampered downfield for the score. Gregg Suhr booted the extra point. The Monsters turned in their strongest victory bid of the year against Snow College as they fought back from a 13-7 halftime deficit to tie the game 13-13 in the closing minutes of play-only to lose the contest 16-13 on a 15 yard field goal with 16 seconds remaining in the game. The contest later turned into the Monster's only victory as the Utah squad was forced to forfeit the game because of an ineligible player, giving EA a 13-0 win. A 0-0 standoff with the University of Arizona freshmen on Oct. 2 was praised as the Monster's best effort of the year by Coach Overstreet. Defensive play of both teams was superb as each squad penetrated the opponenfs 20 yard line only once. Eastern's defensive unit was particularly outstanding, con- sidering that they were outweighed by an average of 40 pounds per man by the huge Wilclkittens. onsters Drop pener, am Then Falter John Smith Fullback V , .. The Monsters were completely out- manned, both offensively and defensively, as they were overpowered 35-14-. As usual, the Monsters helped contribute to their own downfall with costly mis- takes. The stumbling Monsters muffed at least three scoring opportunities inside their opponent's 20 yard line. The following week, Eastern again faced nationally ranked competition in the form of formidable Taft College squad. The powerful Taft eleven spoiled Eastern's homecoming as they sloshed to an easy 27-0 victory on a rain soaked field. On Oct. 23, Eastern journeyed 800 miles to Grand Junction, Colorado for a con- test which saw two winless teams bidding for a victory. Eastern was unsuccessful as they were humbled 16-6 by a mediocre Mesa College squad. The Monsters, scoreless for nine consecutive quarters, broke their three game scoring drought with only six seconds remaining in the game as Tom Farmer grabbed a seven yard touchdown toss from quarterback Ben Haberman. The score took only 51 seconds after the final Mesa score as the Monsters discovered too late that they could move the ball against the Mavericks. Mistakes and an immobile offense com- bined to cripple the hapless Monsters on Oct. 30 as Phoenix College broke a score- less first quarter deadlock and raged on to a 50-0 win. I know some of you will retum next fall and many of you will be going on to Universities for higher education. Still even more of you will be going to other walks of life and I will never come in contact with you again. With this different thoughts going through my mind, I am proud to say that I've had a hand in this 1966 OASIS. For within its pages you and I will always be able to find many treasured memories. We will always be able to look back and recall our activities and acquaintances. Yes, for you this book is a pictorial document of one year in your life. The enrollment of our college is growing every year and along with the increase the OASIS must grow. Each year it takes responsible students who are willing to devote their time and talents to the making of a yearbook. The responsibility is too great for one person to carry alone. My thanks goes to BILLY GRIFFIN, JUNIETTA CHILDERS, KIM ALLEN, MARTHA COSTNER, STEVE NAPIER, NATE EIN- BUND, GRETCHEN QUINN, MARION FOXWORTH and JAN ADAMS. I would especially like to express my appreciation to MR. TOM SCOTT for all his time and helpful assistance. It takes a complete staff working together to produce a yearbook. With a graduation supplement, the OASIS covers a complete year. This book of re- membrance now belongs to you. It is my greatest desire that throughout the years to come you will pause often to look back and fondly recall your 1965-66 school year at Eastern Arizona College.
