A major portion of his life has been spent here at Eastern Arizona Junior Col- lege. From a young man fresh from the halls of Brigham Young University he has grown in stature at the college and inthe community. His keen mind has been a catalyst to thousands of young men and women who have come under his instruction in 20 years of teaching chemistry and the biological sciences. b M His decision to leave Eastern brings sorrow to us allt And so to Mr. Russell Lundell, for the profound knowledge which he im- parted to the young people who have passed this way, we, the staff, dedicate the 1962 Oasis. r - ' , -,fir Fife'-1. n -X1 , la -r AE '. 1 A . .4 'V 6 Y. Guitteau. President Gitteau received his B.A. and M.A. de- grees from the University of Arizona. Thirty years as a school administra- tor has provided the President with special insight into educational affairs. Experience as a teacher and later admin- istrator in the Thatcher public school sys- tem and his tenure as superintendent at Am- phitheatre in Tucson are a testimonial to his ability and his devotion to the profession. Since President Guitteau's arrival on campus ll years ago, Eastern has grown in size and re- nown. Enrollment is up 300 per cent! New build- ings dot the campus. New curriculums have been added and old ones strengthened. A million dollar ex- pansion program is underway, promising over the next two years, new classrooms, athletic plant, including a stadium, gymnasium, baseball and softball fields, cinder track, and tennis courts, and a new men's dormitory. Everywhere progress is evident. For College President Guitteau, there is only one motion -forward! - there is only one direction - upl BOARD 0F EDUCATION LEFT TO RIGHT: George Mattice, j. N. Cuitteau became the 16th Man of the Year at Eastern, and the first to twice re- ceive the honor at the 23rd annual Homecoming, November 4. In 1954, President Cuitteau received Man of the Year honors after initiating a building and improvement campaign that has changed the skyline at EAIC. Among the choice phrases used by Alumni President Larry Crockett in making the award were member- ship in the State Junior College Systemv and continual efforts toward improving the college. Planning,,'. energy, Uenthusiasmf' patience, and at times uimpatiencev-these describe the revolution in education at Eastern under President Guitteau. The result has been prosperity unequaled in college history a current plant valued at over 1 million dollars, a vast million dollar expansion program, and an enrollment that has risen over 300 per cent in 10 years. McKinley Combs, taking over for the injured Stuart Shannon, romped to four scores. Quarterback Harry Brannon tallied first for the purple and gold on a sneak from the one yard line. The husky field general tossed a 13 yard strike to Jerry Smith for the second TD and Combs tacked a pair of six-pointers on the board to build the half-time count to 30-0. Combs, and his teammates, ran even aster and harder through the undermanned and tired Cali- ornians after intermission. McKinley went. around the right ank twice for runs of 20 and 22 yards and TD's. Eastern scored its final two TD,s in the last five minutes on a 21 yard scamper Ey fullback Mike Bennett, normally a defensive halfback, and nother 21 yard sprint by little quarterback Carlos Lucero. ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY FROSH 6 EASTERN ARIZONA 12 Jim Ballard and Bill Toben helped provide a wild finish to an all out battle with the Arizona State Frosh at Eastern Arizona's homecoming November 4. With the score knotted at 6-6 and the attending ready to settle for a tie, a brawl involving players, coaches, and spectators broke loose. Peace was restored minutes later and the clock showed one second left. The Monsters lined up in short punt fonnation, Ballard took the pass back and roamed to his right looking for an open receiver. He spotted Toben standing alone in the end zone and let fly from the 27. Toben moved up a step and caught the toss chest high. With this miraculous ending, bedlam broke loose and Eastern had a 12-6 victory. The hardnosed defenses of both teams knuckled down and the participants went into intermission scoreless, although the Imps had one TD called back. Seventeen sophomores made their last appearance in purple and gold togs and due mostly to their efforts, Carbon didnlt spend much time with the pigskin in its possession. The Monsters began the scoring parade in the initial quarter when Bill Ko- walkowski sprinted 24 yards off the left flank. MCGRATH Coach Wayne McGrath unveiled the wraps on his 1961-62 version of the basketball Monsters against Davis-Monthan AFB on the college court November 27-28 and when the smoke cleared, Eastern had a pair of victories to its credit, 95-61, and, 81-63. The Air Base boys never had a chance as the fleet and nimble hosts buried them in a barrage of baskets. Ioe Acker and Him Douglas shared scoring honors in the set with Acker sluicing in 21 in the opener and Douglas setting the pace the following night with 26. Eastern then embarked on its initial road tour, a two game series with Palo Verde IC at Blythe, and got their first taste of things to come. PV triumphed twice, 65-57, and 78-76. Freddie Lewis pumped through 31 points in the second encounter. The Monsters returned home and succumbed to the Arizona Frosh, 87-71. The next evening, the Eastem cagers met up with the powerhouse Phoenix College Bears and lost a basket trading ses- sion 104-92. Acker and Lewis bagged 33 and 25 markers for the losers but the up-state rivals were just too big. The Monsters carried their four game loss string into Texas and before they left, it was six. Howard County JC jolted Eastern 74-61 at Big Spring to initiate the Lone Star junket and Odessa IC pinned the vis- itors with an 83-65 defeat. Douglas and Lewis were high men in both contests for the losers netting a total of 31 tallies apiece. The Monsters hardly had time to catch their breath as they met New Mexico Military Institute a day later after arriving at Thatcher. Both contests of the two game set were played right down to the wire but the Broncs clung to first half leads to wreak out 77-71 and 84-76 conquests. Acker paced Eastern the first evening with 20 tallies and Douglas led the squad with 23 in the following encounter. The Monsters took their eight game losing streak with them to Dixie Tournament at St. George, Utah, December 20. Rickis College of Rexburg, Idaho, defeated the Eastern cagers in the tourney lidlifter, 86-80. Douglas snared individual scoring honors with 28 markers. The Monsters snapped the none game dry spell the next day and at the same time gained partial revenge against Palo Verde IC for two- early season losses with a 66-50 victory. Eastern was treated to a rude farewell as the host Dixie five whomped the Monsters, 93-71. F we 5 f 4 . I d . 4' Y A T.. f s , 31 my ,.... 'fa X p' . xc e mix W lr. . f 1 ' . Taylor General Contractors thanks ..... Well, at last it's over. In some way, I'm glad, but in other ways I will miss having to worry and work, and everything else that's related with a yearbook. I guess the majority of the students will never know how many endless hours are spent in compiling a book, but those of you who do know will appreciate these hours and others will appreciate the book itself for bringing back many fun, happy, and perhaps sad memories of E.A.j.C. in the school year of 1961-62. As I finally send off the last shipment of the OASIS, I am filled with anxiety and hope that you will all enjoy the annual this year. The production of this yearbook would be impossible without the co-operation and help of the people connected with its development. So, my sincerest THANKS go out to these people: TOM SCOTT, advisor, for his encouragement and for his willingness to help and for just being around to answer those never-ending questions. MARGARET GUYTOIN, photo editor, for the many long hours spent in the darkroom and for developing those last minute pictures. MAX CLARK, staff photographer, for spending so much of his time taking pictures. DOUG WILLIAMS, sports editor, for the wonderful job he did writing up the sports section for our year- book. EILEEN PALMER, for the many hours she put in on the index, and for typing the many little thingsf that I needed. JOYCE LOVELOCK, for arranging photo sittings. and last, but most certainly not least, FRANCIS BURK, advertising manager, for her many long hours gathering ads and for her help in assisting me whenever I needed her. There are so many others who have helped in other ways that it would be impossible to name them all here, so to you all, a special thanks. And, so, you have the 1962 OASIS. We have tried to get a good cross section of campus and college life and interests, and I hope that you enjoy reading it as much as we have enjoyed compiling it. CONNIE MICKELSON Editor 181 L 3.
