1938 The Buccaneer 21 Pi Iftappa £ elta The 37-38 crop of Buccaneer bull-slingers covered the map like red ink. The first point reached was the Dixie Forensic Tournament at Winthrop College, Rock Hill, South Carolina. Then, Earl Hunt and Phyllis Phlegar led their seven team mates by copping, respectively, second place in impromptu speaking, and third place in women s oratory. This happened in early December. Come mid February we follow the line to Boone, North Carolina, where we find the Hunt boy shining more brightly than ever; this time with second places in debating and in impromptu in the Appalachian Forensic meet. Nine also made this trip. Before the month of February is out, two team members! of the female species carry the red strip off on a short tangent, and grab off honors in the Women’s Smokey Mountain tournament at Bristol. Margarete Rumbley led the day with first place in oratory, closely followed by Phyllis Phlegar with third place in the same, plus second place in poetry reading. The girls liked the Smokey Mountain crowd so well that early March found us entertaining their men folk in a tournament on our own campus. The affair went over nicely thanks to student and faculty cooperation. Toward the end of March the line stretches out across the state where we find four of our freshmen grabbing off the two best places in the Tennessee State Freshman meet at Maryville. Some freshmen.
